Brokeback Mountain. It deserved the hype and was a beautiful movie.

Crash on the other hand, was heavy-handed and clichéd. I would've enjoyed it a lot more if they didn't treat the viewer as an idiot, the film could've been greatly improved with a little subtlety.

BillCosby 03-06-2006 09:39 PM

Well I'm pretty dumb, so I didn't mind I guess.

Maybe you see it differently if you've been around L.A. enough.

Or maybe not.
Maybe you see it differently if you've been around L.A. enough.
The thing is, you shouldn't have to.

I still though it was a great movie.

pixiesfanyo 03-06-2006 09:51 PM

^ I guess you're spelling of thought proves Asymm's point. :)
So because the audience was unfamiliar with the area contradicts my post?
wha?

asymm 03-06-2006 10:40 PM

Haha, I'm not saying that those who enjoyed it were idiots. All I meant is that Crash forcefully pushed it's tired message down the viewers throats, instead of respecting the viewer as someone who can make up their own judgments. Crash tells you what to think instead of inciting thought.

Am I the only one that loves the look of that acoustic?

What acoustics (if any) do you all own?

Apologies for the guitar talk.

BillCosby 03-06-2006 11:41 PM

I have a Carlo Robelli acoustic bass.

Little Man being Erased 03-06-2006 11:46 PM

I've got some kind of fairly cheap Fender acoustic. It's alright, I haven't played it for a while. I think it needs new strings.

Brokeback Mountain is the movie that treats viewers as idiots, for the premise alone. Remember that episode of South Park about the independent film festival, and the kids were like "Independent movies are just gay cowboys eating pudding." Now there may not have been much pudding in the movie, but suffice to say, the cynicism that surrounds it was quite evident. "Gay cowboys = critical acclaim" is such dogma that I don't see why anyone took it seriously!

Glitterati 03-07-2006 12:17 AM

For the record, they weren't even cowboys. Clint Eastwood is a cowboy, John Wayne is a cowboy.

Those guys (and I use the term lightly) were just sheep herders.

You didn't see the movie, did you?

YDload 03-07-2006 12:36 AM
You didn't see the movie, did you?
Hell no! It's bad on principle, regardless of its actual artistic merit! Clearly a gay cowboy movie would have gotten boatloads of critical acclaim no matter how good it actually was, so any quality is purely coincidental.

Hey Mike Patton fanatics, for my guitar project I will be comparing his 4 main bands (FNM, Mr Bungle, Fantomas & Tomahawk), any songs you could recommend (one per band) that would display how different each of them were (or just to freak out my class, whatev)

YDload 03-07-2006 02:08 AM

Mr. Bungle songs = Vanity Fair, Carousel, or Platypus (one from each album)

Bartender 03-07-2006 05:20 AM

Fantomas - Page 29
Faith No More - A Small Victory
Tomahawk - Sir Yes Sir

Be aware that I only know three Tomahawk songs, though. Might want to listen to someone else for them.
How come?
Because they want more money or better benefits, I'd assume. The student's union is encouraging sympathy action on the part of the students, and fortunately enough everything I would have today has been cancelled/postponed as a result of the strike anyway, so I can say I'm taking part without thinking too much about it.

Hmm. Bartender's are pretty good. I'll throw in my 2 cents.

Mr. Bungle - Vanity Fair (Doo-wop)
Faith No More - Epic (Rap/Rock)
Tomahawk - Jockstrap (Loungey Hard-rock)

You could substitute Jizzlobber in for Epic too. It's not as different I guess as it lacks the rapping but it's still a different side to FNM. It's hard to capture the essence of a Patton band.

br3ad_man 03-07-2006 06:07 AM

Best Tomahawk song = Captain Midnight

PinkFreud 03-07-2006 06:21 AM
Best Tomahawk song = Captain Midnight
I don't know about best but it's definitely one of them. I'm especially partial to "You Can't Win" though for Patton's weird-***, twisted vocals.

Interstate 03-07-2006 06:22 AM

What's up peeps? Turns out it wasn't the power unit on my pc that cut out at all - apparently it was a power surge that fried the motherboard/processor/hard drive, everything inside the CPU so I've lost all my files and about 30GB of music (most of which I had backed up on my Ipod/CD but still).

I've ordered a new tower unit via my uncle who went into a shop for me so hopefully I should be back online with a kickass machine by saturday

*prays*

br3ad_man 03-07-2006 06:42 AM

Sorry to hear about that. Hope to see you back here soon.
