Lunch 07-29-2005 10:26 PM

I have 330, no neg reps.

I'm left-handed, and play on a lefty drum kit.

ATM 07-29-2005 10:29 PM
What did he neg you for?

I have 347. Trilemma derepped me "for being a brat" when I was feuding with him in here. I've considered posting in Strum's rep thread, but talking up my own accomplishments just for rep seems stupid. I liked the other rep thread, where people would recommend other users for rep and mods looking at the thread would take care of it. That seemed more honest.
I got negged for double posting.

Steerpike 07-29-2005 10:32 PM
I confess, I don't get it. Why not just play a left-handed guitar? Or not tap? I mean, Gary Moore's left-handed and plays a right-handed guitar, and he's ****ing amazing.
To give you a rough idea of what it's like, picture trying to play your guitar when the third and fourth fingers of your fretting hand cannot move independently. That would be me playing left-hand guitar.

Furthermore, the muscles in your non-dominant hand are so underdeveloped, that the joints keep locking and slipping because the muscles and tendons aren't strong enough to create the proper manual dexterity. I can't properly form a fist with my right hand without uncomfortably stretching the tendons in my knuckles.

Does that help give you an idea of what I have to deal with? My picking is almost entirely based on my wrist, and strumming on my elbow because my hand is so woefully under-developed and never seems to get better despite the exercises I put it through.

Cain 07-29-2005 10:32 PM
I got negged for double posting.
Tender never negged me for that, he just banned me the one time.

He's repped me twice so far: that's how I've gotten the bulk of my rep. None of the other mods (except for Aes820) have seen fit to do so yet. Probably because I don't report anybody or hang out in Site forum, or venture far beyond R+M and Politics.

EDIT: Steerpike: that's rough. The only thing I can suggest is more practicing. :)

BoboTheRagingHobo 07-29-2005 10:34 PM
My recommendation would easily be for the Black Label show. You're likely to have a drunken headbanging time there, and Zakk is undeniably a top-notch player.

EDIT: Steerpike: Well, Satriani really isn't much of a tapper, to be perfectly honest. He taps about the same amount as he alternate picks, which is just about never these days. The only tapping lick he pulls is really the one where he taps a trill with the side of his pick, holding the edge perpendicular to the fretboard. His legato style is one where his left hand carries all the notes around Holdsworth style, like a "ball of mercury," is how he describes it. It's also my primary soloing influence: slippery slides, position changes, and exclusively hammering on and pulling off are all Satch trademarks.
He may not tap much, but what about the classics Satch Boogie, Midnight, and Always With Me, Always With You? He did tapping in those.

/not sure if he taps in any other songs off the top of my head.

And I learned tapping off the Crazy Train solo my self, and then did some work with the tapping section off of eruption, and also Atreyu - Lipgloss and Black to be honest.

NP - Pink Floyd - Money

/wearing DSotM shorts

Cain 07-29-2005 10:36 PM

I forgot about Midnight. That song is killer: I played it at a campus show with my friends and people were pretty impressed.

I mentioned AWMAWY. Satch Boogie has a neat tapping thing too, true enough. But you have to admit, Satch doesn't do it with anywhere near the proficiency and level of someone like Vai.

"Circles" has a ton of tapping in the solo, too. And it's a fairly catchy tune, although the transition from the rock part to the clean part is kinda iffy.

Midnight is pretty easy to play, it looks like a daunting task when you look at it, but in all reality it is fairly easy when you dive into it.

Ya, tapping may not be his thing, but he isn't bad at it. People like Micheal Romeo make him look like childs play when it comes to tapping though heh.

Anyway you look at it though, Satch is awesome.

NP - Pink Floyd - Not Now John

This song is just flat out awesome.

ATM 07-29-2005 10:43 PM

I am listening to Limbonic Art :)

This band is pretty crazy.

Steerpike 07-29-2005 10:45 PM

Midnight gives me headaches. As if I wasn't bad enough at tapping.

Of course.

They are a wall of symphonic extreme black metal noise that competes with Emperor in that aspect. Symphonic wall of noise bands are awesome at being intense, which is great when you are in the mood for it.

Good band, to bad I only have one album.

I haven't listened to Pink Floyd in ages. :\

hmm.

I'm left-handed, and play a lefty guitar.

Generally I find that my fingers induvidually are more co-ordinated on my right, but as a whole the left-hand is more co-ordinated.

I've only got one Limbonic Art album, too.

NP: Charlie Parker - Summertime

Limbonic Art is pretty sweet. I only have In Abhorrence Dementia, but I like it bunches.

Yeah, I know. Satch restrains himself to a degree, as you and I have both argued in many a shred-bashing thread.

And I agree, Satch is indeed awesome.

EDIT: Midnight is a great example of Jeff Beck's self-proclaimed favorite guitar playing style: "I like stuff that sounds really hard but is actually really easy." And in Midnight you have an added bonus of it looking hard, too.

ATM 07-29-2005 11:06 PM

Wow.

Demilich have some creepy vocals

Yes, that they do.

Have you heard Wormed?

The vocalist sounds like a frog being choked with a fork, it is pretty fucked up in my eyes.

http://www.wormed.net if you want to hear some of their songs.

Just remember who you're talking to. I've been playing Breaking the Law by Judas Priest for a year and still can't play it without screwing up at least 4 times.

:( You make me sad Steerpike. I was speaking relative to Bobo's comment and my own experience. I didn't mean to imply that should be easy for everyone, because obviously it wouldn't be.

ATM 07-29-2005 11:17 PM

Wormed's vocals are awful.

Good riffs, though.

Humans should not be allowed to make those noises. The music was awesome though.

Lunch 07-29-2005 11:20 PM

The Kinks' vocals are good.

Random, because I'm listening to them right now.

I'm just in one of those moods. I just had to reset my computer again because it was acting up, which means my modem is hokey again, which means no uploads for tomorrow's spotlight until about Monday.

I've come to really hate Dell. It's gotten to the point where asking this computer to perform the simplest of tasks (such as "go back one page in browser") causes it to lock up. It's like the technological equivalent of a man who's never eaten a vegetable in his life trying to take a dump.

Ever thought about getting a teacher to help you out?

In time you will get better, just a teacher could help you reach the point faster. And don't think about messing up because when playing the guitar, that is exactly what you will do if you keep thinking that way.

Also about your comp, do a full reformat on it, it should clear up all those stupid little problems like that.

Wormed vocals : Yes they are quite bad, but they are kinda high in the mix and it kinda drowns out the good insturmentals in the background.

I do have a teacher. But after the first semester of lessons, my progress is still extremely slow. I hit the beginner's plateau and am still trying to scale it.

god, jeff beck is so cool.

Steerpike 07-29-2005 11:45 PM

I've taken a few minutes to calm down. Sorry about my attitude tonight. As I said, I've been wrestling with this computer all night and it's putting me in a bad mood.

Next time I go off on one of these little emo rants, I think it would be better if no one paid any attention to me until I start talking and acting rationally again. Once I get pissed, it's a complete Jeckyll and Hyde. I'm starting to feel like an asshole for all the pointless melancholy bitching I've done lately. If anything, it's just counterproductive.

So, again, sorry for my surliness and pessimism. I just need to shut my trap and learn some tact in the future.

i am the robots 07-29-2005 11:53 PM

Eh, we still love you man.

BoboTheRagingHobo 07-29-2005 11:55 PM

It's all good, Steerpike, don't worry about it.

Cain : Either me or you should do a FA on Satch to defend him from being called a mindless fretboard wanker. Or we could collaborate on it.

What do ya think?

YDload 07-29-2005 11:57 PM

Tool is not metal! You should count them in your poll or you will face the wrath of Tool fans!!!!

Kingofdudes 07-29-2005 11:57 PM

Since everyone basically ignored Iai......
Quoted for new page.
Korn - I would let them in, but some people may claim that they are metal
Rammstein - meh, a little too metal in my eyes
Green Day - no
Kyuss - Stoner rock = modern rock
System Of A Down - See Korn
Tool - I say let them in since they werent in the metal polls
