the instrumentals seemed sort of generic to me. I know they were the first official metalcore band or whatever, but nothing really stood out except the vocals, and that was in a bad way.

Converge's "No Heroes" is decent.
It's my least favorite album by them, but they established the generic sound most band use, so they aren't truly the generic ones.

Converge started a sound that has become generic.
Therefore, if you listen to them for the first time after hearing a bunch of generic Metalcore groups, Converge won't sound that original.
