Na thats kool. atleast i no there are still aussie guitarist who are metallica fans.

roulette dares 3 07-16-2005 06:18 AM

i agree i dont know many guitarists who are metallica fansin aus (i live in WA) anymore. i'm probably the only one out of my friends that attempt to play metallica solos, but ive only recently got into metallica after listening to fade to black.i learnt the solo to that and "one" because its got a really cool tap.

Chu 07-16-2005 07:04 AM
Are there any metallica friends from aus here that can sing like hetfield and wouldnt mind coming to newcastle to join a band
Canberra here
I can sing, play a bit of bass and some rhythm, I'm trying to learn some solos now, but i'm having some trouble.

Funny how people call Metallica sell-outs.

I write songs. I wrote a pop punk song 2 years ago, then I wrote a nu-metal song a bit after that. Last year, I started writing heavy metal songs. Recently, I'm writing ballads. These are all because of my exposure to more music. From pop punk to heavy metal to jazz and classic pop. Does that make me a sell-out?

Metallica started as 4 young kids who loved metal. They wrote really heavy thrash metal, then started to include their Hendrix/etc. influences in their songs, they turned more progressive. James is a big country fan, so he wrote really soft songs on Load/Reload. The band got into the raw nu-metal sound, so they wrote St. Anger.

Does that make them sell-outs? Rich people don't need to sell-out.

I agree. I've gone from pop to rock to heavy metal to hard rock. It doesn't make them sell-outs. I think a lot of the stuff they do is "just because they can" because they were fuor young guys (like this war video game they're thinking about. they'd do it just because they can and guys (as a whole) like war video games)
Well the first 5 albums are filled with decent songs.
and at least half of the rest of the albums are good

 i've answered that post like five times

DaveTheAmazing 07-16-2005 10:02 AM

I'm very fond of the songs on load/reload that are country :)

DisposableHeroes 07-16-2005 10:37 AM

In Cliff's last interview before he died he had said that Metallica would be experimenting with softer sounds. So it annoys me when people say stuff like "they went whimpy after Cliff died" or "they wouldnt be like this if Cliff was still around". Cliff was the one introducing all the new sounds

I agree, just because you dont play ridiculousy fast and insane doesnt mean that youre a poor band. Some of their greatest songs are the ballads like Fade to Black which isnt fast for rythm guitar at all. The Unforgiven is a great ballad which is also a very simple song for lead guitar. the 2nd unforgiven was even better and still showed that soft ballads are indeed apart of metal and rock. I think that by going soft it showed how diverse they could be and not whimpy

Schecterguitarist 07-16-2005 11:33 AM

dont forget to vote for Cliff in the 100 best bassists poll!!!

hethamulburton 07-16-2005 11:43 AM

I think there have been enough tellings of us to vote for Cliff. Metallica didn't go whimpy, they followed where Cliff would've wanted them to go. He wanted them to constantly change how they write, and they did that on each album, naturally there were albums that changed a little too fast like Load, Reload, and St. Anger, and that's why a lot of people thought hey whimped out cause they weren't as heavy as they were before.

Selling out is not just for money.

hethamulburton 07-16-2005 01:07 PM

Selling out is too harsh a term. Selling out is like going from Jason or Freddy to Barney. They changed to mainstream rock, not a sell out, people change genres all the time.

SeekandDestroy220 07-16-2005 01:34 PM

Sellouts?

I don't think it is fair to call Metallica sellouts beecause the'yre genre changes. When a band is around for 20 yrs there is obviously going to be some sort of change in they're sound. With that said, i think that St. Anger was nowhere near as good as some of thier other albums because of the nu-metal sound it has

brettberry 07-16-2005 02:04 PM

They only way I would consider that selling out is if they told the public years ago that they would stay the same. Sounds pretty lame to stay the same music all the time to me, yeah the messed up on st.anger but they are trying to find a different sound than everyone else.

i agree with you there, i mean, had they wanted to play thrash and stick to it they would have probably kept writing in a Kill 'Em All vein.

ya- it's ridiculous to say that they went whimpy, i think that slower songs like fade to black, one , the unforgiven 1&2, and nothing else matters are metallica's best songs

Jev 07-16-2005 02:29 PM

Who said they went wimpy?

DisposableHeroes 07-16-2005 02:46 PM

i've seen it posted before(not here), maybe not in those exact words either

Britton 07-16-2005 03:01 PM

Yea A lot of people call them "sell outs" but most of them are thirteen year old girls who don't know @#$! about Metallica

Everyone seems to think they did that after Black Album when the hair was cut.

Dont hate me for my username.

Didn't Hammett play for Exodus before he joined Metallica? That'd be why all the Exodus fans bash on Metallica because they know Metallica has a better lead.

What's their point tho?

I won't.

They both were brand spanking new bands when all that happened. Kirk did play for Exodus but when he was recruited to Metallica you gotta remember everybody in the two bands were like 17 and 18

ironmaiden_420 07-16-2005 04:58 PM

i just started to really get into 'tallica a few months ago, and i wish i had much sooner :) they're a great inspiration for my songwriting and guitar playing now.i have pretty much all their cd's 'cept for load, and anger. i was wondering if anybody could suggest some songs with easier solo's?this may have already been posted but this is a d*mn long thread and i don't want to go through it all.
