Oh i'll live then, wait did he sing on the alive in athens album?
Ya, he sang with them from Burnt Offerings up to Horror Show. He ranks as one of my top all time favorite vocalists. He left right before The Glorious Burden.

shadow_stalker 10-18-2005 01:39 PM

Nightmare, he was the only Iced Earth vocalist i actually like...from what i have heard

(i can't stop saying nightmare and it really pisses me off :upset: )

ACircuitShock 10-18-2005 01:47 PM

He certainly is my favorite. When I first heard Tim Owens (the new singer) I was extremley dissapointed. However, the more I listen to it, the more I like him, and the Glorious Burden is a great CD, I love the Gettysburg Trilogy. He's no Matt Barlow, but he still kicks ass.

And yes, I am an Iced Earth fanboy...woe is me.

Yeah, similar sentiment from a registered IE fanboy here, I love Owens, but he's no Matt

Cain 10-18-2005 03:22 PM

All Asian guitar players are fucking awesome. The Japanese can put a wailing heavy metal shred solo into anything and make it sound awesome. My girlfriend's J-Pop, with people like pop diva Utada Hikaru, has crazy guitar solos interspersed throughout what's basically mechanical pop music all over. That makes them all great to me. :)

Besides, look at X-Japan. They have one of the best 20+ songs ever, and that includes "A Change of Seasons" and "2112." They're all amazing.

Why Matt Barlow? WHY?

What?!! Well then...the metal world had a great vocalist stolen from them by the First State Force band, heh...

I thought it might be a different Matt Barlow, but I was too lazy to look further when I found this:

Well he's still by far the coolest looking dude in that line-up!

The fat guy above him should be aware that in England "Fran" is always, and I mean always a girl's name...

I'd stick to "Frank" if I were him
and eat a few less pies

Yep, he may be secretly a lass though...

Shred Danson 10-19-2005 07:44 AM

holy shit...well good for him, man, at least he's doing something he believes in...really wish he was still singing for Iced Earth instead of Ripper, but hey, what can ya do...

Huber 10-19-2005 07:46 AM

Tim Owens is awesome.

Shred Danson 10-19-2005 07:49 AM
Tim Owens is awesome.
Yeah, I just don't think he's a good fit for Iced Earth, though...but that's just my opinion...

Lord Abortion 10-19-2005 07:51 AM

I really do like Tim owens, the new era live shows have nothing but positive things to say about him live.
He apparently silenced alot of the Barlow chants they were getting when he first started.

ExitWound 10-20-2005 09:48 AM

Here's what I just bought on eBay (prices after shipping):

Gamma Ray - Alive 95 2-Disc Import: $12
Gamma Ray - Lust for Live DVD: $12

Yay me!

It took some getting used to but I'm even thinking about Tim as a better vocalist for IE now. I saw them live just after the release of the last album but I didn't know them back them. They were pretty good even if I didn't know any of the songs.

Lord Abortion 10-20-2005 02:21 PM

Red Baron is the standout track from TGB, vocally...

Steerpike 10-20-2005 02:47 PM

My god... Matt without the hair. That's just sad. But at least he's doing it out of free will and all. Better to have him leave the world of metal than turn out records his heart wasn't in.

Still, Ripper is awesome. I can't wait for the Gettysburg DVD. I missed my last chance to see them live last year, but next tour I will fucking be there. I was amazed at his abilities on The Reckoning and Red Baron.

I should pick up some more Iced Earth...I've only heard Dark Saga and am slowly making my way through Alive In Athens.

Any recommendations on some of their later, non AIA stuff?

Also, are there any original members still left in the band, or did they all leave?

I have been listening to an ungodly amount of Rhapsody lately...one song of theirs cracked me up though. It was one of the interlude ones on Symphony Of Enchanted Lands...the one where that voiceover guy comes in, saying something along the lines of, "Brave warrior, you have made it!"

I burst out laughing...couldn't help it.

Lord Abortion 10-20-2005 03:15 PM

Horror show has a few good songs on it, and Dracula is possibly the best, Damien and Wolf are great too.

TGB has mostly all great tracks on it, I like Atilla and Red baron the most though.

Stoic 10-21-2005 03:27 AM

I found Sabaton's Primo Victoria in a CD store so I dont have to order it  After a quick listen I have to say it's decent enough but a step back from their previous release.

Iced Earth is realy only Jon Shaffer with a bunch of other musicians so as long as he's with them its Iced Earth.

Yeah try Horrorshow or The great burden.

ArcLite 10-22-2005 01:22 AM
Yeah try Horrorshow or The Glorious burden.
Fixed, chief.

What you say is true to me, as I enjoy all the vocalists' additions to the band. However, there's a piss load of fans who say Iced Earth died when Barlow left.

Yeah, and John Greely kicked major ass in his day too.

Huber 10-22-2005 12:25 PM

Helloween's new album is pretty good. I'm listening to it for the first time right now.

ArcLite 10-22-2005 12:32 PM

I'll have to check it out for sure. So, now after countless listens to Nightfall in Middle-Earth I have to say my favorite tune on it is Thorn. It's not one of the fastest ones on the album, but the melodies in it are awesome. The vocal harmonies, the backing guitar licks...Everything about it is good. Anyone else a fan of the song.

Lord Abortion 10-23-2005 01:56 PM

I got Century child and Oceanborn by Nightwish just yesterday,...Knowing not that she had just been kicked out!

I also got A rise to power and One step beyond too...

Absolutely my favourite along with Nightfall and Mirror Mirror. I particularly worship the circus like solo and the piano part:

AND DONT YOU THINK ITS TIME FOR US TO BRING IT TO AN END
COME PLAY THE SONG OF DEATH
THE WISDOM IN US BOTH WILL MAKE IT SPECIAL GUARANTEED
COME PLAY THE SONG OF DEATH!

:chug:

According to their official site some parts of Thorns were written for Nightfall :)

I reckon sales of NW CDs are probably going to go up now, because of all this hoo-ha.
Tarja getting sacked doesn't diminish the music she did with them; if anything it will make it more precious and irreplaceable. It's funny, but in a way I'm a little bit glad that the band can't now go on to become a parody of themselves - Nightwish as we knew it finished on a high, and nothing can now tarnish that.

Poofy 666 10-25-2005 02:46 PM

i just got Burnt Offerings by Iced Earth.

Dante's Inferno made me sh|t my pants :)

Lord Abortion 10-25-2005 02:50 PM

Haha, I think that's only an average IE offering, but Last December, Brainwashed, Dante's inferno and Diary are Godly.

Thanks for the fix I always get album names wrong somehow. I actually don't think Barlow was that essencial to Iced earth.

Oceanborn is probably their best. Some beastly riffs and solos on there...

Century Child is a bit...more ballady then their others, though it also has some of their heaviest work as well...Slaying The Dreamer springs to mind.

The fanboy in me says both are mindblowing.

I got A Night At The Opera by Blind Guardian a few days ago. Excellent, excellent cd, though I find I can only listen to it for about 3 tracks at a time.

Stoic 10-25-2005 04:39 PM

I'm surprised at how ANATO appeals to new fans. I still havent entirely gotten into it :\

Lord Abortion 10-25-2005 04:40 PM

I love the first few tracks on it, it gets a little meh afterwords though...

Steerpike 10-25-2005 04:51 PM

ANATO takes time to sink in because the production is so dense. The songs on there averaged around 75 instrumental voices, which is unbelievable when you consider how most metal songs average around 24.

Hansi has said that ANATO was an experiment to see how far they could push that concept, and on the next album they'll be toning it down to be more reminiscent of NIME

Stoic 10-25-2005 05:13 PM
The songs on there averaged around 75 instrumental voices
 Is this a fact?!

Steerpike 10-25-2005 05:39 PM

I read that somewhere. I think it was in this thread about a year ago.
