I mean, ya know, no two bands will be comparable on all points of measurement, but the commonality here comes in the realm of melodic accessiblity and a superficial, almost trite, attempt at progressive songwriting structure. I think Brainstorm does it with some class, and PTH?......ah, not so much. Do you like what Brainstorm does, Pete?
first off, no i dont like brainstorm

secondly, you are wrong, there is little to no similarity between the two bands. progressive songwriting structure in brainstorm what? the only thing they have in common is that theyre both influenced to some degree by power metal - brainstorm a lot, protest the hero not as much. vocal delivery is totally different, songwriting is totally different, tempo is totally different, dynamics are totally different, drumming is totally different, riffing is totally different. i dont see the connection no i dont sir

moltenlava 07-20-2008 11:36 PM

Alright, I'm wrong. So, who would you put up against FTB? Dragonforce?

kattunlover69 07-20-2008 11:54 PM

you cant really put em up against no1...you can say they sound like a mix of bands or whatever but no band really do what they do...closest i could think of is human abstract but i dont know many bands in the first place

Tyler 07-20-2008 11:57 PM

only human abstract ripped pth off/is ****ing awful in every way

Nepenthe 07-20-2008 11:58 PM

yeah human abstract is terrible, but for some reason theyre the first band that comes to mind when i try and think of who sounds most like pth. for reasons unknown.

moltenlava 07-21-2008 12:30 AM

I just realized that I detest conventional Prog-Metal. I'm listening to Gamma Ray right now and that 'wall of sound' type thing with the constant bombardment of fast tempo drums gets me fluckin nauseous. It's just about the most uninventive type of Metal there is. Bands like this can just record one album at the beginning of their career, and then every year just put new lyrics to the same old shyte and release it. Blind Guardian is the king of this kinda stuff. Which, I guess, isn't saying too much about them.

But, PTH is just some corny-asz schitt. It's way too Poppy to be seriously considered. The guys here at Sputnik who dig real Metal can't be into these guys, can they? Like, I kinda know Pate's taste already. Someone with his taste can't be into a band like this. Who's listening to this stuff?

RiceMonster 07-21-2008 12:34 AM

Umm yeah, Gamma Ray and Blind Guardian aren't Prog Metal

kattunlover69 07-21-2008 12:40 AM

neither is protest the hero

OH SNAP I THINK I JUST STARTED A DEBATE!

if I didnt then o well who cares.

Pate likes this.

FYI, the poppiness rules. FYI, you're a troll, and, fyi, you're bad at it.

both between the buried and me and dillinger escape plan would be more logical
I just realized that I detest conventional Prog-Metal. idk about gamma ray but seriously - youre talking about brainstorm, dragonforce and blind guardian as prog-metal? theyre all forerunnners in the power metal genre. you don know sh!t

also, protest have a very defined stop-start sound, which is fundamentally different from a "'wall of sound' type thing with the constant bombardment of fast tempo drums" so idk what that has to do with this thread

also, i like metal in most shapes and forms, everything from Deicide to Dissection to Daughters to Decrepit Birth to Deadguy to Dark Angel to Dismember. i also love Protest the Hero. dissing something because it's too "poppy", esp when it sounds like PtH, is just tuff guy behavior.

And it's a total front, given that he's spent most of his time in this thread coming out of the closet and describing his twisted sexual fantasies.

Nepenthe 07-21-2008 01:35 AM

the pop is the only reason i really like pth. if they didnt have that, theyd be a pretty ****in mediocre band to my ears.

Pete 07-21-2008 01:37 AM
the pop is the only reason i really like pth. if they didnt have that, theyd be a pretty ****in mediocre band to my ears.
disagree, i think all the parts compliment each other well

moltenlava 07-21-2008 01:41 AM

I just fluckin think it's way weak, yo. What, am I supposed to agree, or say I fluckin like it because it's the consensus opinion here? I don't like Pop music. So what. There's way too much good music out there to be listening to stuff that's deliberately constructed to get Pop culture attention. Weren't half you cats dissing Metallica for having done the same exact thing in the 90's? And, I doubt that Pate like this stuff. I saw a chunk of his catalog and PTH just doesn't fit in with the color scheme. And, I mentioned the 'wall of sound' thing in relation to Gamma Ray and Blind Guardian, not PTH.

Nepenthe 07-21-2008 01:41 AM

yeah i worded that bad. all of the parts are good, but if the poppy parts werent there i would definitely not like them half as much as i do. those sections are what puts them over most bands for me.

Pete 07-21-2008 01:51 AM

ok i was just asking why you were talking about that wall of sound thing, it didnt make sense in the pth-context to me

there's really no comparison to the drastic change metallica made, and also to their immense mainstream popularity - pth have constantly made their music more multifaceted and complex, while metallica did the exact opposite

however, i cannot argue with you on point ont - if you don't like them, you don't like them. i just think you dislike them for the wrong reason, since (for example) theyre not a pop band, but thats my problem :)
yeah i worded that bad. all of the parts are good, but if the poppy parts werent there i would definitely not like them half as much as i do. those sections are what puts them over most bands for me.
def. true, this is pretty much what i meant as well, since the parts compliment each other they make a rocking whole :)
There's way too much good music out there to be listening to stuff that's deliberately constructed to get Pop culture attention.
There's a difference between having melodic, pop sensibilities and dumbing your music down to cater to the lowest common demoninators. I understand that you're insecure, but their pop influence takes more from musicals and 'traditional pop' than it does, say, Britney Spears.
Weren't half you cats dissing Metallica for having done the same exact thing in the 90's?
No, that had more to do with Metallica changing their sound to sell records and, you know, sucking ***. Protest has had these sensibilities since they started out as some poopty small-town ska band.
And, I doubt that Pate like this stuff
Orly?
I mean, like the occasional hardcore vocals. I really dig the style he uses for 80% of the album.

The music slays.
Just because he mostly listens to traditional metal and doom metal and things of that nature doesn't mean he can't like something that's a little outside his limits. Not everyone's as shielded as you.

Seriously, get over it. Not only are your points juvenile and mostly pulled right out of thin air, but you're bringing in generalized arguments that don't apply, you're trying to speak for people who arent hear and you're more or less embarrassing yourself.

Tyler 07-21-2008 01:56 AM

That's funny why? Just leave while, well, you're not ahead. Leave before you make yourself look like an even bigger failure.
