RetiredAt21 02-17-2006 08:04 AM

I'm still trying to start a hardcore band. We need a bass player REAL bad.

RetiredAt21 02-17-2006 08:08 AM

Their breakdowns are gonna rip your face off d00d! Hahahaha, jk.

Subvert_bassist 02-17-2006 10:17 AM

That's because bass players are rare, and good ones even rarer. You NEED me. Haha.

Subvert_bassist 02-17-2006 10:19 AM

Their drummer gets pretty crazy with the double bass at times.

Liebensaft 02-17-2006 10:23 AM
Dude, your band is really good. I can really see you guys getting pretty popular. You guys have to play in PA. PUH-LEASE.
I always wondered if you lived in Lancaster, PA. I'm around Quakertown....if you know where that is.

And I'm going to have to listen to this now, because I've heard nothing but good stuff.

Fritz Plays Bass 02-17-2006 10:41 AM

Yeah, nobody ever wanted to play bass, it just seemed to be the instrument that suited me, it's VERY important, but not as upfront and flashy and high and mighty as guitar. Drums were out of the question, I've drank my coordination away.

Subvert_bassist 02-17-2006 11:19 AM

Yeah, it seemed the choice for me, too. It was, at first, easier to learn than bass, but if you're good and throw little flares into the basslines, people notice. There's nothing I have to show you guys that would show off any skill I have, except the little nothing basslines in the breakdown of "Death to Humanity". But, we cover Sacrifice, and we do it the Antischism style in that I do all the crazy bass solos in the chorus. I've tabbed out a bunch of Antischism songs because their bassist is hella good, and learning his songs would, in practice, make me that much better.

Fritz Plays Bass 02-17-2006 01:03 PM

I'll admit I learned on the Crack Rock Steady bands and Suicide Machines and The Clash and Rancid. Over time I started just trying to play faster and remove some of the ska (I still throw in off-root notes to keep the basslines interesting, which is hard while singing). I don't use a pick though so my playing is just this awkward mess of two finger picking as fast as my fingers go while trying to make the bassline sound nice with my fretting hand. I was never one for soloing though, I just don't like doing it.

Liebensaft 02-17-2006 03:06 PM

I play bass too, and find it's rather unappreciated. I love playing it though, and it's made me appreciate music more.

Subvert_bassist 02-17-2006 03:43 PM

I can't finger-pluck fast enough for what I play, so I have to use a pick. Besides, if I finger-pluck it, my fingers get all tied up when I switch strings. After many jam sessions with my drummer, though, I can play ridiculously fast with a pick; I have to be able to, with the speed he plays blast beats at.

clustifux 02-18-2006 01:29 AM

A good bassist is hard to come by around here. Me, I personally am a guitarist. Ive been playing for almost 5 years now. I picked up drums as well and i currently play drums in my band because its impossible to find a god damned drummer in this hick town. But..hopefully ill one day find a band that will let me play guitar and yell a lot in.

Gnarmageddon 02-18-2006 09:46 AM

Holy s'hit.

Tuesday, March 23 @ Emerson Theater
Disfear (featuring Tompa Lindburg from AT THE GATES and Uffe from ENTOMBED), Phobia, Misery Index, The Dream Is Dead, Strong Intention

I want to go to see Phobia and Disfear, but I don't think I will because the venue is insanely small and I don't want to get beat up/stabbed by the metalheads. The Emerson's basically in the middle of the ghetto.

That in Indy?

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 11:36 AM

Subvert, sweet avatar, Haymaker kicks so much a'ss.

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 11:41 AM

A good bassist is pretty hard to come by around here too. All of the idiots just play guitar to impress girls, and they aren't even good.

AIRIC 02-18-2006 11:45 AM

I used to be a good bassist (IMO), but I stopped playing and now I rarely play and it sucks :(

AIRIC 02-18-2006 11:48 AM

Go see Phobia puss.

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 12:22 PM

Yeah man, you CANNOT miss Phobia.

Gnarmageddon 02-18-2006 12:35 PM

I'll only go if I can round up a few friends to go with me.

Times Ten 02-18-2006 12:35 PM

We are getting a similar show in May. I'm definately gonna try to go.

Disfear, Phobia, 9 Shocks Terror, Strong Intention, Rumpelstiliskin Grinder

I like all of the bands and I love Phobia, Disfear, and 9 Shocks Terror. I have heard that Strong Intention is horrible live, though.

I have tried playing with a pick and I just can't for the life of me play fast enough, whereas I can play upwards of 200 BPM with fingers just fine, but the second I try playing with a pick I get VERY uncomfortable. I'm kinda the opposite of you, I get tied up with pick.

Are your friends into grind?

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 01:00 PM

I can play bass pretty good without a pick, and REALLY good with a pick.

Gnarmageddon 02-18-2006 01:02 PM
Are your friends into grind?
A few.
That in Indy?
Yeah.

But seriously. I need people to go with me. I'm scrawny as hell.

Yeah.

Well, if they're into grind AT ALL, then they certainly wouldn't pass up that show.

Gnarmageddon 02-18-2006 01:16 PM

They're more into white-belt stuff. My friend showed some interest in going when he told me about it last night.

clustifux 02-18-2006 01:33 PM

our bassist is learning slap-bass right now. Were gonna try to add that to some of our more sludge/grind-like songs.(if the rest of the band members wanna play it that is.)

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 01:52 PM

I have an idea. Tell them you'll pay them if they go with you. Then, don't pay them.

RetiredAt21 02-18-2006 01:53 PM

Slap bass is pretty tough. I have one friend who can do it really well, it's very impressive when it's done right.

Gnarmageddon 02-18-2006 01:55 PM

Sounds good.
