Chicago, actually. The venue doesn't allow cameras that I know of, may be kinda hard. :(
I wish I had known about this earlier, I think I may still be able to get tickets though. I'll see what I can do, I also figure parking will be a problem judging from the location.

Are you also going to see Opeth this summer as well?

Det_Nosnip 05-23-2005 01:52 PM

Yeah. I believe I'm going to be back home, though, so I'll probably catch the Dallas show. $30 bucks for Opeth and Strapping Young Lad...I'd be an idiot for sure to miss that!

Rothmans 05-23-2005 01:54 PM

I would love to see Opeth live that would be brilliant I loved Lamentations.

Oh well....

Lateralias 05-23-2005 02:07 PM

I'm glad this thread didn't go crazy due to the news of Opeth officialy signing with RR records... to all those who fear that Opeth might possibly change their style because of RR, or Roadrunner trying to sell out Opeth faster than cocaine... here is a quote straight from Mikael on the official Opeth forums...

"Hand on heart do you truly believe we'd compromize our sounds for anyone or anything? I'd bitchslap any outsider trying to interfere with our vibes!"

This sure gave me a smile, so I wouldn't worry about the band being convinced or forced to change their sound... I trust Mikael knows ALOT better than that.

Besides RR has had some good bands back in the day, they might have some questionable bands signed now (besides Opeth or Obituary :) ) but maybe Opeth can break that curse from them.

Got to love that line. I think he'll be bitchslaping some execs though.

Kage 05-23-2005 04:26 PM

Who gives a shit what label they're on?

Cain 05-23-2005 04:30 PM
you should really give the growling vocals some time, believe me, they will grow on you.
at first I was like: 'they write exellent riffs, but why those vocals over top of that, ruining the song? :( '

but now I've come to appreciate them, I noticed how great they mix, and how well this is an addition to the music.
this may sound weird, but the growls improve the emotion-feel of the song.

for example:
The moor of the still life album.

when Mikael growls 'No mercy would help me on my way
In the pouring rain nothing is the same.'
that's just so full of emotion, you can feel the pain in his growl
After a while, the growls themselves have melodies and notes. Kinda nuts, huh?

RouteOne 05-23-2005 05:03 PM

Any news of their new album?

SatchBooG3ie 05-23-2005 05:32 PM

"We can now officially announce that Opeth has signed a worldwide contract with Roadrunner records. The rumours were true! The new album is set to be released sometime in the late August or early September of 2005.

Opeth has cancelled their Vienna/Austria Aerodromme festival appearance (May 27) due to the recording taking longer time than expected. We are very sorry for the fans who expected to see Opeth there, but we hope to return to Austria as soon as humanly possible!

The recording process is going well. One song is mixed and done, another one in the process of being mixed. Solos are being recorded as well as death screams. Some songtitles? "Ghost of perdition", "The baying of the hounds", "Isolation years" and "Harlequin forest" The record plan to be done by June 1.

Opeth are most likely to appear at Bergen/Norway´s Hole in the sky festival (August 24-27) as well as the semi legendary Summerbreeze (August 18-20) fest in Germany. We will confirm this as soon as it´s....confirmed!"

Taken from Opeth.com

Opeth is now officially on Roadrunner Records.

Kage 05-23-2005 06:04 PM

The song titles on the new album sound great. Can't wait for it.

RouteOne 05-23-2005 06:15 PM

Oooooooo I like the song titles.

Deth 05-23-2005 06:50 PM

The title sound Opethian, so that's good. (And yes, opethian is a word now).

RouteOne 05-23-2005 06:56 PM

I heard rumors that the album theme is going to have to do with the occult?

Deth 05-23-2005 06:57 PM

On Lamentations, Mikeal said he was considering doing a concept album based on the occult, so that would be interesting I'm sure.

bball_1523 05-23-2005 07:12 PM
I heard rumors that the album theme is going to have to do with the occult?
I also heard that, but I also heard that they trashed the idea.

RouteOne 05-23-2005 07:21 PM

i think it would be interesting for Opeth to take a darker approach to their songs. Not that most of them aren't dark to start with. :p

Kage 05-23-2005 07:25 PM

What are you talking about? Their songs are all really dark.

Det_Nosnip 05-23-2005 07:27 PM
After a while, the growls themselves have melodies and notes. Kinda nuts, huh?
Well, I see growling vocals as kind of like a natural form of vocal distortion. It's kinda weird if you think about it how almost everyone can listen to a distorted guitar, yet only a privileged few enjoy harsh vocals. ;)

Deth 05-23-2005 07:28 PM

/listens to The Drapery Falls. Yeah, it's dark.

/listens to Master's Apprentices, yeah, that's really dark.

Lateralias 05-23-2005 09:11 PM

Even a good majority of the ****ation songs have that dark vibe to them, Closure for example, also Death Wispered a Lullaby.

But dark does not mean the music cannot be beautiful at the same time.

Darkness 05-23-2005 09:22 PM

Man, my cd store doesn't stock anything before Blackwater Park... its kinda annoying. I really want to buy Still Life, even though I have a burnt copy..

Sorry for being off topic but....I managed to get PT tickets :thumb: Do you know what the setlist is?

This is going to be a great summer for concerts.

Amazon is good for finding CDs that you can't find at local shops, plus they have free shipping for orders over like $25 I think
