I think my nex bass shall feature a carved mahogany wings with figured walnut top (1/8" laminate maple stripe in between the two), 5-pc maple/wenge neck, birdseye maple fingerboard, and matching walnut-top headstock.

I also want two MM-style humbuckers (maybe some Delanos?) and an Aggy OBP-3.

Anybody know of a 6-string MM-style humbucker that has pole pieces showing?

that's all i could really find :thumb:

Hmm, I don't know if aesthetics is worth a sacrifice in tonal quality. I'm really looking for something similar to a Wal pickup for a 6-string bass.

Build your own/commission someone to build it for you?

That's also what I'm thinking. I'm in contact with Clint Searcy who bulit my 8-string pickups to see if I can get him to make two Wal-esque pups.

I'd build my own, but I'm not sure exactly what goes into their pups. I know they use an interesting form of humbucker (I believe they were stacked both vertically and were horizontally positioned) with a LPF of some kind.

So, I'm thinking about joining the forces/RCMP.

Opinions?

Something about this is hilarious.

He gets the first bomb dropped on him on a business trip, then returns home just in time to get the second bomb.

Yeah, I'm going to an information session early next week. They say that its almost guaranteed that you will not be posted in Ontario or Quebec, which sucks but I think I'd manage.

The pay is pretty good and I have some friends who are also interested in it.

Yeah, usually you don't get posted in your home province right away. After a few postings, though, sometimes it can happen. Plus you can retire after 25 years (going in young, that puts you at ~45) so you can do whatever the hell you want afterwards, and with a sweet pension at that.

Dang, I didn't know you could retire that early. I knew the same about the military, but that's awesome.

fatbandit 03-24-2009 05:39 PM

You answered your own question about the MM pickups. Delano will make 6 string MM style humbuckers. And they are great.

Poor bastard. :(

Lucky to live to 93 so far though. Two nukes and he still ain't dead.

I wonder how his mind was affected by that though. Seeing one of the most horrific things imaginable happen twice in a few days.

Do they have punchy/growly mids that cut through? I really don't want to end up with Barts again. I hate the ones on my Conklin.

That's not bad at all. Not that I'd want to do it, but it sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

DaveSavesTheDay 03-24-2009 06:32 PM

So, I'm moving out in May.

I'm pretty stoked. It also means that I can't spend my money like a tool anymore :upset:

I've also got the next month to save/pay off my credit card. Hopefully I can milk my parents for some money to cover the U-Haul or something.

:amaze: 03-24-2009 06:35 PM

damnit. i put way too much milk in my mac and cheese and now its like soup :(
damnit. i put way too much milk in my mac and cheese and now its like soup :(
Top it with bread crumbs and throw it in the oven for 5-10 minutes. Make a baked macaroni.

DaveSavesTheDay 03-24-2009 06:41 PM

^ good call.

Spaceman Spiff 03-24-2009 06:43 PM

Good call, yes, but far too much work. As bad as it is when you put in too much milk, you just suck it up and eat your mac and cheese soup.

:amaze: 03-24-2009 06:49 PM

yeah, i've gotta get to the library to study for my microbiology exam tomorrow ... i can't afford to waste time making bakes mac and cheese and surfing MX

DaveSavesTheDay 03-24-2009 07:37 PM

why not just strain it?

Yes, I realize this is far too late, but could you not just scoop out the noodles and pour the appropriate amount of cheese soup-sauce back over them?

:amaze: 03-24-2009 08:12 PM

straining it would make it much less cheesy. and i like it cheesy.

DaveSavesTheDay 03-24-2009 08:36 PM

but soupy

Hello all.

Sablate McNuff 03-24-2009 11:20 PM

Paul, what's crackin?

Sablate McNuff 03-24-2009 11:27 PM

I'm slowly designing my next custom, and I'd like to model it after the Spector Euro a bit (their body design is so comfortable), but I want to extend the upper horn and make the bottom horn smaller to provide for easier 24th fret access.

Does this design look dumb at all?

burtonbassist_102 03-24-2009 11:50 PM

i like it, actually.

Sablate McNuff 03-24-2009 11:55 PM

I do too. I think the upper half needs to be a hair wider, but I think that design will help keep the body weighed down and force the instrument to balance better.

I just sent a couple requests to different small-ish luthiers to see who can do it for a good price (I don't wanna pay much more than $2k for it).

:amaze: 03-24-2009 11:57 PM

damn, i wish i had 2k for a bass. ****, i wish i just had 2k.
damn, i wish i had 2k for a bass. ****, i wish i just had 2k.
Same, brother. If I can sell my Conklin and Aria, I can hopefully pull in ~$1400 from both and only have to save a couple hundred more.

Sablate McNuff 03-25-2009 12:29 AM

how's the casual tonight?

burtonbassist_102 03-25-2009 01:01 AM

appears to be dead.

I thought about buying a stock bass (hell, Spector Euro 6 LXs only run $2k), but I'm really looking for a particular sound and feel that few other basses in my price range can achieve.

Besides, if I can get a bass that is more aesthetically pleasing to me and custom tailored to my sound and playing style for the same price, why not go custom?

I'm going to upgrade the pups in my Schecter first (EMG DC in the bridge, EMG CS in the neck) to see if I like what it does for my tone. If so, I'm scrapping the second custom idea and I'll be buying a second bass and second set of pickups to keep around in case of emergencies.
