I'm going to use some aircraft paint stripper.

Then I have to wash the wood good with soap and water. Then sand lol.

Billie'sBouncer 12-31-2006 09:31 PM

The spalt bass sounds awesome SoM great work. I would love to try one of your basses sometime they look and sound amazing.

Spazzout22 01-03-2007 12:14 PM

So here, where my bass is at now... I'm not sure how long it'll take it to get done. I've got a week in march when i'm home and can work on it. Or maybe I can convince my dad to fret it and finish it, and I can do the nut work and assemble it here. Anyway, front and back:

Very nice work i love the shape, great wood choice, very classy :). Love the inlay dots as well. Also what kind of bridge is that?

You've done some unusual things there, with the quilt maple on the back and the shape. Very distinctive and impressive. Did you make the bridge yourself?

Spazzout22 01-03-2007 07:19 PM

haha, I wish I made that bridge myself. As it stands, I have no way to machine metal. The bridge is a Kahler 5 string.

I really just like having the front look pretty, but knowing that there's lots of surprizes when you turn the bass over. Kind of like my own inside joke. But I guess we'll see how will it turns out once I actually try to play it. It's heavy as ****. Most of the body is cocobolo with a thin laminate of maple in the middle plus the maple on the back. That bridge is pretty darn heavy as well!

Yeah, I'm guessing your looking at a 15 lb bass there. But those heavy basses tend to have tons of sustain and great growl. Actually I've been mostly playing a bass that's over 14 lbs and you get used to it really quickly. It helps if you do come weight lifting though

I agree that the surprise on the back is a cool thing...

purple_hazer 01-03-2007 11:52 PM
We'd have to talk. I do do guitars, and I also do custom headstock shapes. But "black"? I don't do painted, only natural wood...

And in addition to the above I'm not yet doing any shapes other than my standard "mjolnir" shape, and modifications of it...

Lookin good so far, just make sure you get that body all sanded out evenly.

And since I'm basically here to take abuse tonight, here's a clip of me playing the spalt maple bass. In explanation, I never play fretted bass, and I don't slap or pop. But it sure sounds like I do on this recording. This is all finger style playing, just spanking them strings with good calloused fingers :)

but youd do a 27 fretter?

Very very nice man. How long has it taken you to get this far? What sort of hours have you put in?

My project so far:

It's on it's way though, I've a fair bit of time this month, and I got a couple of details of luthier suppliers off a colleague of ma's

CCR90 01-04-2007 02:08 PM

I was thinking about building my own custom 7 string with a carvin through neck.

Here's the body design:

Specs:

Neck:
-24 fret
-neck through
-ebony fretboard
-no inlays
-binding possibly
-quilt maple veneered headstock
-locking tuners

Body:
-Mahogany wings
-purpleheart, bloodwood or walnut stringers
-quilt maple veneer over mahogany
-Dual humbucker
-les paul style switching and controls
-string through bridge

Custom knobs as well out of purple heart possibly.

what y'all think?

lemoley 01-04-2007 05:13 PM

looks very B.C Rich-esque

CCR90 01-04-2007 06:02 PM

I started with a mockingbird shape...

moghes69 01-04-2007 07:36 PM
I started with a mockingbird shape...
it looks like the result of a mockingbird having sex with an SG.

CCR90 01-04-2007 07:38 PM

That good or bad? The plywood copy I made the horns aren't as SG shaped. But the back end isn't as hourglassy.

Patrick O))) 01-04-2007 07:40 PM

More Firebird V than mockingbird tbh, especially in terms of sg breeding

CCR90 01-04-2007 07:56 PM

Ya, it's definitely a highbrid of many shapes.

moghes69 01-04-2007 08:42 PM
That good or bad? The plywood copy I made the horns aren't as SG shaped. But the back end isn't as hourglassy.
it isn't bad, i was just pointing out the resemblance. it does look a little disporportionate, but that could be fixed pretty easily.

CCR90 01-04-2007 08:46 PM

It is massively disproportionate. I don't think it's a big deal though, I like the shape and all. What will matter is when I get the mock up body done. Hopefully I'll be able to do that very soon in fact.

Son of Magni 01-05-2007 09:12 AM
haha what about a 16 fret guitar?
I could even do a 12 fret 1 string guitar :)

CCR90 01-05-2007 02:15 PM

how's about a ukulele

purple_hazer 01-05-2007 04:39 PM
I could even do a 12 fret 1 string guitar :)
haha holy crap, sorry that was supposed to say 36 not 16

also you dont do quotes huh

mnemonic 01-05-2007 08:54 PM

144 fret guitar plz

moghes69 01-05-2007 09:58 PM

how about a 12 string bass with 60 frets and pickups made out of jesus's semen?

Son of Magni 01-05-2007 10:06 PM
haha holy crap, sorry that was supposed to say 36 not 16

36 would put a huge limit on pickup placement, and very difficult to play up there, but is possible

I do quotes, just through email after deciding on most of the design...

purple_hazer 01-05-2007 11:46 PM

i dont mean to be a pest but youd do a quote even if could in no way buy one?

Son of Magni 01-09-2007 06:25 PM
i dont mean to be a pest but youd do a quote even if could in no way buy one?
Sure, a ballpark quote. Tell me everything you want including

Top wood type
Core wood type
Pickups
Controls and preamp
Number of body lams
Neck wood types
Number of neck lams
Number of strings
Number of frets
Type of tuners
Type of bridge
Billie'sBouncer 01-10-2007 01:30 PM

Update: Did walnut inlay dots on fretboard (can't really see them right in picture), drilled tuner holes, bolted on the neck.
New Pic, almost there once I finish winding the pickups I have to install them then finish sand everything for finish.

What do you think I would use for the core, other than wood?

johnb73 01-11-2007 07:17 PM

SoM how much do you charge for necks? im going to need one for my Oak Tele haha, i don't know what wood yet but id like a ballpark "range" i guess
What do you think I would use for the core, other than wood?
very true, but do you see what im saying? can it be done?

EDIT: ofck! on a related/unrelated note i have an insane amazing idea for some mass produced guitars

The core would be made of a custom 2 mile long piece of rope licorice that comes out of a dispenser on the guitar that looks like the output jack but is actually a dispenser.

I guess I really have no clue what you're saying. Unless you're asking if I can build it the same way I always do...

I've never sold just a neck. I guess it would be between $200 and $400 depending on just what you're looking for.

I think he's more interested in the 2 woods he suggested.

Or, he wants to encase the guitar/bass

yes, you CAN see through the body, all the pups run at once, the bridge IS grounded with spare wire and hot glue, and there's a patch on the headstock where the paint almost came off.
