I'm such a fan.

I don't really have a question... but you rock :thumb:
Thanks! :thumb:

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 11:55 AM
Jean - How old are you and when did you start playing bass? Also, have you met any celebrities or movie stars?
14? 15?

I don't believe in celebrity-ism... When I've met famous people, I treat them like anybody else. I've met/hung out with quite a few famous people... rock stars, basketball players, a few actresses. And I've had friends change from being regular joes to having some fame/money. It's interesting to watch from an outside perspective.
Mr. Baudin -

I just wanted to ask your opinion of my arrangement of Thelonius Monk's Round Midnight. I'm definitely a fan of your tapping work and arrangement, and would like to see what you think of mine. Pointers and critique would be awesome. Thanks!

(There's the thread where you can find it)
sounds good to me! keep it up.

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:01 PM
hey jean i really want to learn the song "it's my birthday" but the highest number of strings that i have is 5. so i was wondering if its possable to play on a 5 and if it would be possable to get a tab for it somewhere. thanks

lowsound
you can definitely pull that one off on a 5. (that album was recorded on a 6-string). I suggest trying to learn it by ear! I'll eventually tab out the "flying through the air / Impalement" bit on my website. That's the fast middle section that sounds like cartoon music before the slow part near the end of the song. whew.

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:03 PM
also i noticed that you have done a few songs with mike patton, have yout ever been asked to play in ones of his bands? and how is it working with soemone that is considered to be such a musical genius?

lowsound
I've talked with him a couple of times, but never recorded with him.

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:06 PM
i hear theres an 11 string being made for you. how is that gonna be tuned?
your not gonna add a lower string(c#) are you? that'd be really low :amaze:
Two are tuned (h. claw, conklin):
C#, F#, B, E, A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb

The Joust 11 will be tuned:
F#, B, E, A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:09 PM
Howdy! I saw some of your videos and you are just amazing. Thanks for putting up with our questions. ;)

Im not sure if anyone has asked this yet cause it would take days to read the whole thread. But have you ever played/owned/considered buying a chapman stick? It seems like it would be right up your alley.
I'm a bass player, and I do a lot more than just tapping - which you are restricted to on a Chapman Stick. I also don't like the reverse tuning thing. And they look kinda stupid too (sorry).

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:12 PM
I have a question!

How is the Joust bass getting on and do you have any recent pics of it?
Ken just got the pickups for it and has been making the pickup covers. I don't have anything more recent than what I've posted.... I kinda want to be surprised, so I don't want to bug Ken for more pics until it's done (hopefully another month).

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:13 PM
Hey Jean Baudin, I'm just curious at what age di you begin playing bass?
14 or 15 I don't remember. hahaha.

Radiobass81 07-15-2005 12:13 PM

I was just hearing your songs on your "Myspace", and I must say, I am REALLY impressed. Not so much for the nuclear rabbit songs, but more for Frosty Acres. Definitely one of the most beautiful pieces ever written on bass. Just wanted to mention it.

:thumb:

*Will never be able to play it*
"Would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs?"

"Hell, I would, then top it off with a tall cool Budweiser."
we watched that DVD over and over last time we toured the west coast. our drummer kept doing the voice of Gus Chiggins, the old prospector.

Jean Baudin 07-15-2005 12:25 PM
hey jean, isnt it hard to play with fanned frets (if thats what they are called) because they arnt straight...?
It's not hard at all... if you spend a few minutes on it you get used to it. The only place it gets weird is the 23-28th frets... but I don't hang out up there too much. ;)

thanks so much for the compliment! I've been surprised people's reactions to it, as it doesn't have any pyrotechnics... just a somber mood.
*Will never be able to play it*
Technically, it's not challenging to play... but it does use all 9-strings.

Okay, I think I got them all. Until next time!

Radiobass81 07-15-2005 02:56 PM

Yeah, I have four strings. I don't tap, either. I probably won't play it :p.

What do you mean, pyrotechnics?

I'm an idiot, sorry.

tenorbass 07-15-2005 04:23 PM

hey jean man, what do you do before a gig? me a have a nice 16oz energy drink. Also are you going to put up any more vids? thanks brother.
14 or 15 I don't remember. hahaha.
So there's hope for me! ;)

As for my question...I was thinking since you are like the shiz at the art of tapping. Would you be kind enough either to write a lesson and put it on your site or in the lessons section of this forum?

It would great to learn from someone such as yourself :thumb:

/suck up.

Titties_n_Beer 07-18-2005 05:27 AM

My only question would be this: Do you have any affinity for Gabe from Penny Arcade?

Yeah, that lesson sounds like a great idea, in my opinion the best way to learn is to ask someone who you think is kick-a$s at it.

Plus I'd quite like to learn t otap properly.

I just listened to some of the tracks on the Nuclear Rabbit site, and could see that you and your band mates a very talented, but The Pimp, the Bitch and The Magic Beans freaked me out... Your lead singer's voice is scary

masterofdisaster 07-26-2005 04:04 PM

asdf 08-01-2005 07:41 PM

I've known about you and Nuclear Rabbit for a bit over a year now and I'd have to say I am definitely a fan! You are extremely talented. The friend of mine that got me into Nuclear Rabbit is absolutely obsessed. We wish we could see you in concert, but seeing as we're in Michigan, I doubt that would happen :p

I can't really think of a question that hasn't allready been asked, so I'll just say thanks for stopping by our humble forum. :thumb:

Low_End_Communications 08-01-2005 11:26 PM

Here's a good question: When do we get to see the new beasts?

nicatterberry 08-02-2005 01:40 PM

Look there. I like it. A lot.

Worrpigs 08-02-2005 06:54 PM

Mr. Baudin, you such an inspiration to me, like i posted on your myspace account(like youd know it was me or anything) your music, especially "Frosty Acres" has helped me through alot of times, and no joke, after about a half hour after hearing that song, i decided to get me an ERB. Now for a question, how long did it take you to build your first 9 stringer, or was it built for you, how did you design it, get the specs, etc. sorry for so many questions but i really like your basses and your music.
much love and respect,
ben

Low_End_Communications 08-02-2005 07:18 PM

That Vintage 9 is amazing.

Now, when is the Hideous Claw and Joust 9 going to be completed? Any progress shots? Over at TB members when mentioning how Conklin was finally able to move on with other projects because your herd is nearly complete, so what's the story?! WHEN CAN WE SEE MORE!?!?!?

Ya know, if you wanna bring Nuclear Rabbit to the UP of Michigan, I'd be glad to let the band stay at my house!

Shabookie 08-03-2005 11:37 AM

Yea, this guy is one bad mofo.... The super mario theme rocked my socks off.

Sorry guys - I've been out of it again.

If any of you are interested, I'll be on the G4 Cable Channel show "Attack of the Show" - next week (8/11). I'll be doing a little bit of tapping. :D

Before a gig, I usually just walk around talk to fans or check out the other bands. I have no "pre-show rituals". :)

As for vids, I'm going to see about putting up the tv appearance (mentioned above).

Yeah, I hope to have some lessons up on my site at some point. I'm writing a four hour tapping class so I think I'll have some material I can siphon from.
for you...what is the most challanging song you know...
I was working on one of the pieces from the Well-Tempered Clavier from Bach and that was killing me. It had 3 independent voices which was resulting in having 4-5 fingers on the fretboard moving in different directions... I kinda gave up on that one.

There's a mozart piece I have been working on that's pretty hard but I can play it at a slow tempo. Though, I'm trying not to practice that one because I'm going to rearrange the fingerings for the 11 - so I don't want to have to unlearn it... if that makes any sense.
