Who's going to make the cd's?
And are they getting sent all around the world to the differant composers featured?
I think it's more of a make-believe CD, probably be put on a website or something.

LightRaven 07-12-2004 11:40 AM
Yeah, he was the most expensive around everyone else was charging like $30, but they all sounded like stoners trying to make a few extra bucks. I got some emails back (after I typed out like a 4 paragraph letter explaning what I wanted in a bass instructor) that looked like:

"well, i don't know any theory or anything. but i can show you how to play your bass. i charge 30 an hour"

or

"I took a lesson once on jazz improv before, so I'm sure that I could teach it to you."

I was like, "Eh, no thanks. I'll go with the guy who actually makes a living off playing his bass, and actually took the time to write to me and send me a resume."

Besides, LR, I think that the weekly plane rides from So. Cal. might be a little too much for me. But I'm sure if you were out here you could jack up your prices and still have kids lining up around the corner to take a lesson. :)

joe
Wow.. sounds like you have some crappy *** teachers over there. "I took a lesson on improv once, I can teach you that" I've taken years of improv lessons... wtf is this guy thinking?!

You know it's weird. I live in Philly... and philly is a big music scene. But where do I teach? In New Jersey. There is absolutely no where to teach in philadelphia. There are a few mom and pop stores that offer lessons... they have like.. 1 teacher. Big music stores like Sam ash and guitar center, are not in city limits and they don't do lessons either. I feel bad for the young musicians in philadelphia... the only way they get lessons is if they go through their school... and then hope that maybe their school teacher knows a private teacher they can study with (which was the case for me. My string teacher couldn't keep up with me... she was a violist, I was a double bassist... she'd sit there and write in all the fingerings for all the pieces we were playing... and then I'd grab my music, grab her white out and white out all the marks she mad. Pissed her off big time... then she realized, I was doing it because I didn't need her assistance in playing music... I knew how to read bass clef, knew what bow to use... and when she finally realized this, she hooked me up with the Principle Bassist of Delaware symphony.)

There are some high society places here that do lessons... Like Settlement music school, which I went to for a few months before deciding it would be better, and cheaper, for me to take lessons with my teacher at his house.

And even then... there is no resource for guitar! School teachers aren't taught guitar... so guitar is not taught in school... the odd chance there was a guitarist in the school band was when someone came in self taught!

Alot of people at my work don't realize this... I have no formal training on guitar. I was started off by my parents when I was 6 or 7... learned some chords... everything else.. was on my own accord. After playing bass for a year or two.. I was able to apply what I knew to the guitar and then take myself further.

And here I am one of the top paid teachers at my work. :S

Yes, I have more guitar students than bass students.. that is just the nature of the instrument though. Bass is catching on though... this past year, I had about 8 bass students... doesn't seem like much, but previous years... the most I would have would be 2 or 3 at any given time.

So on top of there not being a cirriculum for guitar in our schools, there isn't one for bass either... Double bass.. yes...rare. but yes. Bass guitar? No.

In philadelphia... you'd think differently!

*sigh*

And because I am a girl, I will not teach privately in Philadelphia. There is just too much of a risk for me going to someone's house to teach...

Maybe when I am older.. and am quite settled in my career... I will start some sort of school in philadelphia.

Or.. perhaps I can convince my work to open a fourth location in philadelphia. I actually should do that. We are opening a third location soon... meh.. I'm going to have to talk to them. I mean.. we are a chain now... might as well stretch the boarders.
Hey lr,do you know me eh eh?!?!?

What ever happened with the mx compilation cd?
*ugh*

You want to honestly know what happened to the CD?

:upset:

It was a great idea, and I loved doing it, but there were lots of problems. At first it was me waiting to get a new computer. Then it came about that I should have limited how many songs I accepted. Then, I was having issues with people complying with ****.. .I needed title, band name, members, etc.. and people would just ignore my email.

I got very frustrated.

That summer was... to say the least.... extremely difficult for me. Unfortunately, my depression took a turn for the worst.... I almost ended up hospitalized in August. :upset: The CD became a huge burden.. something I knew I couldn't finish because of my present state... I wasn't getting any help, and at that point.. it was more important for me to try to work on myself. :(

I still have all the songs... I probably still have all the info backed up onto a CD somewhere. And if I actually went back, I'd probalby be able to get rid of half the accepted songs because people aren't here anymore.

That is what happened. I'm sorry. :upset:

Wow, that's really bad. I've been through depression before (although not as bad as being almost hopitalized) so I can kind of relate.

I don't think anyone can really blame you for not coming out with the CD.
Maybe there will be a new one someday with all us newbies.

nisakss 07-12-2004 12:21 PM

Cods, sorry I don't mean to be a jerk or anything, but your avatar really, really sucks, and I really never thought that a figure that has done so much harm would be related in any way with music. Out of pure curiosity, do you actually admire him??? because I can give a little fact, today there was a bombing here in Bogotá that killed like 15 persons. The FARC took responsabilitie for it, claiming something really stupid, and the phrase ended like "in the name of the Che and his glorius campaigns we have decided to bla. bla, bla, long live the revolution!!"
****, I'm so ****ing pissed out at you and any one relating to that sort of crap, glory of the revolution, glory of dying for the revolution, what about the glory of killing for the revolution? Where's the glory in that.

gaslight 07-12-2004 12:36 PM

^ It isn't Che's fault that those people used his name like that, he's been dead a while.

As if Cods had anything to do with what you are talking about. Yep, he planned it and everything  So you are pissed at him because he has an avatar of an icon that you don't particularly appreciate. Take your anger and your frustration out on the real culprites... not someone who you hardly know, out of a simple picture, and high-jacking my thread at that. It says "casual stuff, come on in" not "your avatar sucks and I hate you..."

LR
Sorry about that, I didn't mean to high-jack your thread or anything, it's just that it happens that that is my casual thing today. And of course I'm not blamming Cods or anything, and I apolize for that (i didn't think it would come across like that), it's just that when people from around the world support the Che, or anyone else that has inspired our guerrillas, it gives them support, it's almost as wearing a green peace sticker or something, you are giving support, and that matters.

So, I apolize with LR and COds, and the rest of the forum. It's just that I'm very sad and frustraded, and to be sincere I needed to get this out of my chest. I'm really sorry, I don't want to upset anybody, and I behaved childlish and inmature and I know that attitudes like mine only generate more violence and hatred :upset: *goes digs his head in the ground*

only 52 more to go

Omega Red 07-12-2004 03:14 PM

make that 51

nisakss 07-12-2004 03:24 PM

Thanks for asking me, but there are much more accomplished bass players in here that know more about bass. But anyhow, I don't know how new you are, but the first thing you MUST learn to be a good bass player is to lock in with the drummer and beign able to hear the whole song, soloiing comes after. Start out with easy riffs, and make sure you don't miss a beat, something like Sunday Bloody Sunday, or Road Trip (RHCP, it seems you like them), or I Could Have Lied. At first try using your fingers, although a pick is fine, make sure you are articulated, that you define each note you're playing. You also have to develop gorilla grip in both hands, so that you can play effortlessly for long periods.
And of course, learn theory, as much as you can. I've never had lessons but I have some books and videos. If you can get an instructor.

And above all play. Play as much as you can, and don't restrict yourself to playing bass parts, you should try to play melodies, lyrics, almost anything you want. I find that this gives you a great visual connection from your hands to the bass. Try figuring out paterns that allow you to make good statements, and weed of with your ear the notes that won't fit in a particular key (the key is like the song's home, where it goes). When playing try putting your hand in the position of the neck where the key is a once you have the pattern figured out, it much easier then to play fills, passing notes, or whatever you want.

Hope you find it useful!

BTW, make sure that your bass is well adjusted (action, neck, etc)

nisakss 07-12-2004 04:20 PM

Is anyone here a F1 fan? For me it is the only thing that can compete with bass, I guess I like it even more, maybe. If I could choose between beign a musician or a F1 driver, I think I would choose beign in F1. BTW, I think that Silverstone has been the best race so far this season, Kimi is so good. I'm really looking forward to seeing him paired with Montoya, it oughta be good. So, anyone else here has other passions as strong as bass playing?

Not wanting to sound pessimistic... but don't expect it to go well. You've got mere days before you play an instrument live, which you don't even own. Bad planning.

Stick to the root note and pray there are no chord changes. Probably best to use a pick, it's easier to get used to in a short time.
i love riding bmx its such a rush!!
haha. I raced BMX for years. From about 13 till I was 18 or so. After I got into college I had to stop. Well, I didn't have to, but I got a job, and was spending more time with school stuff, so I didn't have the time for it. When I got to be about 16 I started street, and did both for a while. I thought that was strange, because you don't find too many street riders who race at the same time. At least you didn't 4 or 5 years ago. I still have my old frame. I've actually been thinking about selling it, but it has a lot of sentimental value, and I don't ever think I'd get for it what I think it's worth. So just for fun, here's some vintage Joe for y'all. Circa '97 or '98. (Don't ask me why it's sideways... if it doesn't show up right click and press "show picture")
