I have a question.
Does anybody here owns "the live in tokyo/5 years in a LIVEtime" 2 dvds? I'm thinking about buying it but I can't find valuable information about it.
If someone here owns it, please tell me if its good (or not)!

I'll do my best to give you some "valuable information". First of all, it is definitely worth buying, and I'm fairly certain you can find it for cheap. The first disc chronicles a show done in Tokyo after the release of Images and Words. The second disc takes you from the Awake days through Falling Into Infinity. Both discs have commentaries by the band and are both very entertaining. I would recommend buying this 2-disc set in addition to all Dream Theater merchandise!

I was thinking of getting Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York. Maybe I'll get the Live in Tokyo 2 disc instead. Can anyone pick the better of the two, I'm mostly interested in the live material.

It really depends on what Albums you like better.

*if you like Scenes from a memory, Get the New York one.
*If you dont really like SFAM, get TOKYO!

I got it, it's good. Not as good as the Metropolis or Budokan DVD's, but definately still worth the money. It has the videos that DT have done aswell which is pretty cool as I had never seen any before.
Have you people lost you minds? Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands of our time. You a$$'s are just a bunch of spoiled pansies and want more from these musical masters. John Petrucci is one of the greatest guitar players. Period. He has intense speed on his guitar that is unmatched in any I've seen. Jordan Rudess, how DARE you criticize him. This man was born a child piano prodige, and is unsurpassed by ANY rock keyboardist to date. John Myung is never given a huge solo within which to shine, but can keep up with Petrucci on the fast melody licks. Mike Portnoy is revered as a drum god, and is the youngest drummer to be admitted into the Drumming Hall of Fame(or something like that). I read that some thought that James LaBrie's vocals sucked? That pothead needs to f*cking sober up, his singing is insane!! You listen to gritty Cobaine lyrics, don't you? (@$$) Wake up ladies, we are in the presence of greatness, and we should enjoy it before it fades.
I very much agree, Dream Theater are in my opinion, by far the most technically and musically gifted band in the world. However, I would just like to point out that although John Myung's lack of bass solo's is a crying shame, you said he is never given one, he is given the occasional. The Dance of Eternity (3:15 or so) and Metropolis Part One (5:30 or so) are some examples that stick out where JM shows off his awesome bass skills.

People that criticize Dream Theater in a negative manner either:

a.) Are musically retarded.
b.) Listen to rap.
c.) Don't try anything new.
d.) All of the above.

[EDIT]: Any information about the new album coming soon?

I'm still waiting for the news.... I think they are currently passing time with their familly after all the touring!

Has anyone else had any trouble seeing the bonus material on the Train of Thought cd? I've tried the link from the DT site and it hasn't worked. Is it worth the effort trying to see it?

a.) Have different taste in music

Fixed.

^Dream~Theater^ 12-27-2004 12:23 AM

I found the images dvd to be just great.
i thought the 5 years in a livetime was awful. The music didnt sound as good and the cameraman was way too drunk, I dont want to see the keyboardist playing nothing when Petrucci is solo'ing.

Notice he said 'negative manner'

I think by 'negative manner' he meant 'baseless flaming'.

If you have different taste in music, you shouldn't just flame a band like an idiot. I don't like alot of death metal bands, indie bands, or whatnot, but I don't go around saying "omfg kreator suxxx0rz" or anything like that.

You're right, I hate those comments as well. But it seemed as if he was trying to say "You're retarded if you don't like Dream Theater". I can't stand it when people can't except people not liking their favourite band.

I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant. If it is, I'd have to agree with you about having different taste.

I don't care if someone doesn't like my favorite band (Tool or DT) but if they are just moronic about it, that's when I can't stand it.

It's one thing to say "I don't like this band because of their style" or "I don't like that genre too much" etc. But to be like "there gay" or something utterly stupid like that is what we fans can't stand.

Speedy Fingers 12-27-2004 03:46 AM

My first DT CD was LSFNY, aand for only £10! I was blown away by the sheer power of the band, and the technical and creative abilities of each member. My first song was The Dance Of Eternity, which again, just blew me away.

Now a few years later, I own all their albums and EP's and receiveed the Live At Budokan DVD yesterday for Christmas from my best friend. It is possibly the best live DVD I have ever seen, I bet they are truly amazing live. I love how it has a load of special features too, especially with Jordan Rudess in them!!!

angry armadillo 12-27-2004 09:37 AM
Have you seen Live at Budokan? Unless you have, don't argue it with me. He doesn't tap on As I Am, but does do the harmonic intro.
I've seen them live

Not a bass tap on the ToT album.

I have ToT, I&W and Live scenes from NY

I used to love them, but I don't listen to them so much anymore, they lack songwriting skills and make up for it in technicallity, which I'm not digging at the moment.

kurrpt 12-27-2004 09:39 AM

if that dude isnt singing, im all about 'em. That instrumedly on that budokan DVD kicks so much tail

The Depressed 12-27-2004 10:01 AM
Not a bass tap on the ToT album.
errr.... how about the intro to This Dying Soul? With the tap harmonics being played under the chug riff?

Or the section just before the 'Don't cross the crooked step' on Honor Thy Father? Just after the 'watch the way you talk' and the shred bit?

Admitedly, they're the only two sections, but there IS bass tapping on the album.

:p

RiceMonster 12-27-2004 01:52 PM

I got the Metroplis 2000 DVD for Christmas, and I was very Impressed. The performance was incredeble, but I didn't think to highly of the short skits it had on it. I really like how they included everyone who was involved in the recording, such as the choir.

Arucard 12-27-2004 01:57 PM

I got The Budokan cd for christmas. OMG HOW GOOD. Im sorry.

i like dream theater and all, but people that critizice dream theater are not musically retarded, maybe they like shorter simpler music, or they like a more melodic feel to guitar solos, or maybe they dont like heavy metal. There are many reasons to hate DT, they are not an easy band to listen to.

dUSK 12-28-2004 01:43 AM

I've recently started to try out DT, but so far the songs i've got are all softer, balladlike or acoustic songs. That's great and all, but i'd like some heavier stuff.

Any suggestions?

tanzarian 12-29-2004 03:09 PM

the glass prison is a heavier song :thumb:

As i am
Endless sacrifice
Honor thy father
This dying soul
In the name of god
Beyond this life
Dance of eternity
Overture 1928

Trooper 12-29-2004 03:13 PM

Buy Images and Words.
You won't be disapointed. Best Dream Theater album in my opinion.

On a side note I finally learned my first DT song fully through.
Through Her Eyes. :)
It may be the simpilest DT song out there but I'm happy. :)

Listen to Train of Thought. Almost every song on this CD have heavy riffs.

yogaguitar 01-02-2005 02:10 PM

Alright: I wan't to by a dream theater album, but I don't know wich I should start with. I only heard one song but one of my friends (that got almost same music taste as me) want me to by one.
could you suggest one please? (wich is the best one)

ytsedrummer 01-02-2005 05:58 PM

Well it all depends on what sound you wanna start with. Dream Theater dances around with sounds (like every progressive band) If you wanna hear the real heavy side of Dream Theater, pick up Train Of Thought, if you wanna hear the real technical side, pick up Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, if your'e into eighties metal with all that high pitched squeling, pick up Dream Theater's debut album- When Dream And Day Unite, if you wanna hear the all around thing, pick up A Change Of Seasons (EP), If you wanna hear heave with some strong keyboard wizidry, pick up Awake, if you wanna hear eighties metal ,mixed with technical sounds and odd- timesignature filled tunes, pick up Images And Words, the debut album with current singer James LaBrie. The album I started out with was Scenes From A Memory- a concept album wich connects with a song on Images And Words. Scenes From A Memory is FILLED with trure keyboard wizidry, done by current keyboard player Jordan Rudess. It also features some heavy tunes, some quite mellow tunes and not quite so technical as Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence or Images And Words. Hope that helped.

When Dreams And Day Unite is their first cd, which dosen't feature James Labrie but is still a powerful album with some great songs (YTES Jam) Images has more of their 80's style in their, but has some very good songs (Learning To Live, Take The Time, Metropolis), A Change Of Seasons is basically 1 song and a whole bunch of covers, but the titled track is all you really need, an epic 23 minute masterpiece is well worth it. Awake is going back to their early roots but is a great album with some unforgettable songs (Lie, Erotomania, Caught In A Web). Scenes From A Memory..Basically the best concept album i've ever seen, This cd is a MUST BUY for anyone, regardless if your a DT fan or not, Some great songs are (Dance Of Eternity, Finally Free, Home, Overture 1928). Six Degrees Of Inner Turbluence is where i think they got the most technical and stepped it up in the heaviness and with a 42 minute EPIC piece on the second cd which is absolutely orgasmic :)
Id well suggest it to anyone, some great songs (The Glass Prison, The Great Debate, Blind Faith, And the whole Six Degree's Of Inner Turbluence Piece itself. Train Of Thought..Undisputed, the most heavy album from Dream Theater and all the songs are very catchy, Some very good solo'ing on this cd even though lots of people disagree, some good songs (As I Am, This Dying Soul, In The Name Of God)
