What studio headphones does everyone use? Im in the market for some but dont know who to look for. Need reliable/affordable/decent quality to mix on.

they're 80 bucks and i've used em to mix before with decent results, they're a little present in the top end but other than that they give a pretty honest sound

I've got the Beyerdynamic DT770's. They have really good detail, though they're not as flat-sounding as some other models (a little bit hyped at the low-mids). They're closed-back, and honestly have the best isolation I've heard in an over-the-ear model. That was a big selling point for me at the time of purchase: I do mostly on-location/same-room recording, so I need to make sure I'm hearing what's getting recorded instead of what's in the room.

Im just about ready to buy a Line 6 UX2 for recording guitars and bass for my band. Im right in thinking this thing can route to an unlimited amount of tracks into my DAW and im not limited to just a few?

I have a question,

I wonder why I tried using cubase sx 3, audacity, and cool edit pro 2 and they all have the same problem of the left volume meter being louder than the right meter? I thought my cable going from my pod to the soundcard is screwed up but doesnt seem like it. I tested the hardware, from sounds and audio devices, and checked all the volume controls but still cant seem to figure it out.

I just reformatted my computer but never had this problem before. any thoughts?

A) what exactly do you mean? and B) If you're asking about Track count, a lot of DAW's have unlimited track count, some have artificial limits making you pay through the nose for more tracks (cough pro tools cough). and C) you are limited to the amount of pre amps and/or analogue inputs on your interface to how many thing you can record at one time.

I would try to get your money back if you can. Buying software on eBay isn't typically a smart idea. There's generally no cost advantage from the retailers who won't screw you over. And "screwing you over" could be anything from selling you a pirated version to a legitimate version that already has been pre-registered and the license used to pay for reduced upgrade price (i.e., you paid for a product you can't register). The long of the short of it is that if you can't get them to respond to your messages, they might just be running a scam.

If I'm up-to-speed on how eBay works, they can't technically take your money via PayPal until you give them a rating (the money just sits in PayPal's escrow), so you have a little bit of leverage, but it's not a lot.

Except that won't actually get him anywhere. The whole point of paying for software in the first place is that you want to have support from the developer and you want to get access to stability updates etc. You don't get that with illegitimate copies of software.

If the decision is made to get an illicit copy of the software at this point, the result will have effectively been giving this eBay seller a wad of cash for doing nothing. Nobody benefits except the scam artist. That's a worst-case scenario if I ever heard one.

The guys i am buying from are a registered company with a Company Registration Number and VAT number. If i dont get it in the post on Monday im gonna give them a call (they have the number up on their page).
I havnt given them a rating yet cause im still waiting for them to deliver the damn thing, so i cant see that as bieng the reason they havnt been in touch, its been cleared by paypal and gone out of my bank account.

Maybe they are just douchefags.

Well if they've got their registration info known, I'd be willing to bet you'll get things sorted out eventually. Legitimate commercial businesses are usually more interested in doing legitimate business, since they're way more liable (in multiple ways) if something goes amiss. I was previously under the impression you were buying from some single seller, which would've put me on much higher alert.

The way I understand PayPal via eBay is that if you make the payment via eBay's interface, PayPal acts as an escrow until you leave a rating. The money is out of your account, but they can't claim it until you've left a rating. This might have changed, but about a year or so ago I was told this explicitly by multiple sellers after the policy changed (one was even in-person).

I checked Companies House and they are legit, so hopefully its just a communication hiccup.

With regards to headphones, iv been reading up people talking about headphones amps?
Would i be able to drive a decent set of headphones, say a pair of Beyer 990 pro's, through a UX2?

I cant really find anyone who is elaborating on what they mean by headphone amps.

I think a good place to start is to learn to be a recordist. Buy that I mean learn to competently capture in your recording program whatever it is you hear in your head. Soundwise + performance wise. Whether its Cubase, Logic, Protools, or whatever, you have to get to that point. Don't worry right away about mixing, adding effects, etc. Learn first to just be able to run a competent recording session. You can always get people to mix + master. People spend years upon years learning the 2 Ms.

Generally speaking, anytime you've got a piece of gear with the word "Headphones" stamped on one of the outputs, it has a headphone amp built into it. Headphones are speakers just like any other speakers, you need some kind of amplifier to drive them: headphones just happen to need less power for it because they're designed to be low-volume (relatively speaking). The UX2 looks like it has a headphone output, so don't worry too much about that. The only time you might have issues would be if your headphones have uncommonly high impedance (which happens but you normally know about it).

The most common use of headphone amps is to provide multiple pairs of headphones the same signal (e.g., so the whole band can hear the same mix while recording). That's why most of the headphone amps you see will have multiple channels.

I sorted out my problem with the ebay shop and Cubase today. Turns out Royal Mail lost the parcel, so i got a full refund and have re-ordered a copy from a Store retailer, not an Ebay only store.

Right so i have installed all the software and have everything registered. Can someone link me to some decent info on how to use my ux2 to record into Cubase cause the cubase 5 manual isnt fantastic.

headphones - AKG K701s. They're great, real 'airy' top end, the LF are a bit lacking though but it's the same with all headphones. They're open backed which is great for longer sessions but is also a reason why the LF aren't being reflected and driven into your skull like you get on closebakcs

Think K702s are pretty good as well, I love my 701s though, might be cheaper now there's a new model out. Definitely recommend them for mixing, but really you should be checking your mixes on monitors in a well treated room as much as poss, as well on all other forms of playback system you can find!
