hey SOM, is lutherie a kind of side project outside a full time job? i hear overall lutherie isnt quite 'where da fat cash is'
|
How are you able to router so well? I suck at it.
I have a router table that I use for rounding over the edges of the body. All my other routes are done with the milling machine. It's all hand controls (not cnc) but way more accurate and way less dangerous than a router. Edit: Oh, unless you mean the outside shape of the body. I do that with a bandsaw, cutting very accurately. Then smooth it out with a spindle sander.
hey SOM, is lutherie a kind of side project outside a full time job? i hear overall lutherie isnt quite 'where da fat cash is'
I'm a full time software engineer, which I do enjoy a lot. And without that I would not have been able to put together my shop. So, it's all good... |
Skit: Is that a Peavey T-40 p-up?
Indeed :thumb:
eh Skit, what company made that SG bass? I like the shape of the body. Makes me wanna get an epi one and shape it like that one.
A Japanese company called "Zenta" there not around anymore and I found the bass on eBay by chance and havent seen another one since... |
Thanks...
That is from a billet I got off the bay, had to resaw it myself. I get a lot of tops off ebay, but mostly try to get pre-bookmatched.
Did you have to fill in any gaps in the wood? I have found that many spalted boards I have come across have cracks going all the way through. Kind of turned me off to using them, but yours looks crack free. |
Indeed :thumb:
A Japanese company called "Zenta" there not around anymore and I found the bass on eBay by chance and havent seen another one since...
thats cool. I reckon I'll pick up an epiphone and shape it like that. definitly diferent and cool. and SOM, that thing is ****ing awesome. |

No cracks or voids. But some areas that are pretty soft. I'm going to harden it with CA glue.
...and SOM, that thing is ****ing awesome.
:) |
how much would you charge for a custom 7 or 8 string guitar man?
|
how much would you charge for a custom 7 or 8 string guitar man?
Of course a lot depends on what hardware, pups, and electronics you want. But you're talking roughly $1500. |
whoa lol. I'd definitly be worth it though. I'll hit you up after I've been playing for about a year more or so, that way I can truly justify a guitar of that beauty haha.
|
wow, 1500 seems like a steal man
but thats 1500 for just a stantard 8? also would you do trans scale things? |
ya I guess thats a good price compared to conklin.
Hows a bout a 9 string with 36 fanned frets haha. |
wow, 1500 seems like a steal man
...Hows a bout a 9 string with 36 fanned frets haha.
No problem, but only in fretless :amaze: Edit: This spalt bass, I did a few tests today and decided to harden the spalt with clear shellac instead of CA glue. Seems to have worked well, and didn't darken the wood as much as the CA glue would. Plus the fumes are 1000 times more tolerable... How often do you see flame and spalt in the same piece  |
so SOM, a 24 fret 8 string guitar with pretty much the same stuff as the bass ur making, how much would that cost?>

Since you're not saying what you want for hardware I'll just give you a slightly sanded version of the rough quote. Stay within these constraints: - Machine Heads - $80 - Bridge/Tailpiece - $100 - Pickups - $150 - Electronics (preamp) - $150 - 5 lam body - 5 lam neck includes 2 lams of purpleheart or macassar ebony - Something nice for the top and back, bookmatched Then I can do $1500. But I've decided to avoid Cocobolo for the rest of my life, so it can't have that in it. |
Thats pretty sweet man. Definitly gonna wait but I know I'm going to hit you up. I like everything you did on the guitar above, even the spalt maple.
|
That's gorgeous SoM.
Isn't Cocobolo sawdust really poisonous? |
That's gorgeous SoM.
Isn't Cocobolo sawdust really poisonous?
Not poisonous, but an intense allergen. I got through this project without a reaction, so I'm going to take my money and run... |
yeh fanned frets
The problem would be that I don't have a gig for cutting fret slots like that. And I don't know of anyone that supplies fingerboards that way, not that I've ever looked. But in theory, yeah, I'd be fine with building one :) |
