I think Damian's new album, entitled "Welcome to Jamrock", is the best reggae to drop since Steel Pulse "African Holocaust". A varied mix of roots reggae, dancehall and some cross-genre sounds that rock. Lovin it. He's got such a strong message, but still mixes it up. Gets me appreciating dancehall style more. I really feel "There for you", his mix of "Pimpers Paradise" and "Exodus" (called Move!), "Road to Zion" and "In 2 Deep". I'd love to hear some thoughts on this new album if anyone be willing to share 'em. Jah bless! -Roaryasta |
I'm feelin' Jamrock as well, though the less socially conscious songs get old. Plus the first line of "Babies" is way, WAY too overstated "Women get abortions / and killin' all the babies." But it's a pretty solid record. Worth the money for the title track. I think the "best reggae to drop since African Holocaust" title is a bit undeserved, but the title track is really one of the better singles of the last several years, certainly.

I just got Max Romeo - War Ina Babylon and I'm really liking it. Any of you guys have it?

I dont know man, thats quite a track list but 39$ is pretty steep. Perhaps you could find one used, looks like they start at about 30 bucks.

Hey Zion Gates, I dont know if you use/condone torrents or not but I found the "I am the upsetter" compilation on www.isohunt.com.

First you need a bittorrent client.
http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/download.php Once youve installed the program you download the torrents to it and they transfer there. |
You should also get soulseek. In my opinion, it's much easier than torrents or Limewire or anything. I do use torrents occasionaly, though.

"less socially conscious" - you mean the club songs like "Hey Girl" and "All Night"? Yah I feel that, but they get my girl moving (and me too) so I have to give some props. "For the Babies" - "Now I see them giving the woman abortion to kill another baby." - is the first line. Yah yer right it is overstated, but later in the song he gets to some understated words: - "All of these young ladies. Give them thanks and praises. How long can she take it? Dreams are full of maybes. Will she ever make it? Hustles on a daily. In the club a shake it. Strip down ‘til she naked. Don’t ever mistake it. Much too real to fake it. Need it then she’ll take it. She’ll do it for the babies. A mother’s love is sacred. Now you don’t ever fail me." Fair opinion on Pulse, though I haven't felt this moved and inspired by a reggae album since Holocaust. Very possible I could have missed a better album. If you enlighten me, I would love to hear to hear the music! Thanks much for the words. Jah bless! -Roaryasta |

My favorites are Scratch Perry, Toots, and Burning Spear. I saw the Maytals this summer, it was a great show, completely different atmosphere than what I'm used to.
|
yeah i cant get the torrents to work, and iam way to lazy to go fix it. And i cant get soulseek because i have a mac.
Besides that... i just got my first Culture c-d, i love it...it reminds me alot of Burning Spear |

Thats what i love about reggae. When i saw steel pulse in concert it was my first reggae show and i couldnt believe how positive the atmosphere was. Everyone was groovin to the music, smokin herb and being happy. I couldnt believe such a place existed. :D |
ive never been to a reggae concert before :( ...except seeing these imitation bob marley bands in jamaica

http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/downloads/ssX-1.0b6.dmg I've been using this soulseek client and its been working fine. The closest thing I've been to a reggae show was some ska concerts. |
