Wow, you guys are cynical. The biggest difference between MCR's debut and "Three Cheers" is just the better production that a bigger label could offer. Their sound hasn't changed (although Gerard's songwriting has improved - his sobriety maybe?) and all of their success is deserved. That "trend" was actually a couple of bands (The Used and Taking Back Sunday) who were overhyped in anticipation of emo taking off. MCR is the band that actually delivers on that promise, so they're just taking their own music and getting it out there.
The sound hasn't changed?

I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was filled with pace, lots of original melodies and raw vocals from Gerard. It presented some of the hardest ("Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us"), cheesiest ("Headfirst For Halos") and beautiful ("Demolition Lovers") songs on the underground post-hardcore scene.

Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is clearly a lot poppier, with the guitar riffs more polished and listener-friendly. I agree though, Gerard's songwriting has gotten a hell of a lot better, but that doesn't make the songs any less made-for-mainstream.

TheChaplain 08-03-2005 03:25 PM

It's not MCR's style that's changed, it's just glossier production. And who can blame them for wanting to appeal to a broader audience? Isn't it the goal of every musician to have their music heard by as many people as possible?

TheChaplain 08-03-2005 03:28 PM

And just because Gerard's voice petered out in the second half of Bullets doesn't make his vocals more "raw". I really don't hear the difference between his voice on the first half of Bullets and Three Cheers - the records are just mixed differently.

Firstly, learn to edit.

Secondly, glossier production or not, you can still hear a distinct difference in the band's sound. Their first album had a veyr melodic feel to it, with lots of darker and faster riffs being used. Also, something I love about that album is it pays homage to a lot of things. "Headfirst For Halos" could be about Peter Pan, and "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville" is definately about Dawn Of The Dead.

The second album is a hell of a lot slow-down, with songs like "Helena" and "To The End" providing a much more perfected melody.

I think the thing that seperates the 2 albums is the tempo really. Bullets is clearly a lot more fast-paced than Three Cheers, and I think Gerard's almost bad singing just adds to the dark and gloomy feel of the record.

EDIT: Another aspect I think differs the 2 is the theme of the album. Bullets is clearly very angst-ridden, with lots of song themes on drugs and hate. Three Cheers is essentially a love story, and I think the 2 themes change Gerard's singing style, and you can tell in the way he sings and screams certain parts how passionate he is to the 2 different themes

Actually I'd say three cheers is pretty angst ridden too. "For what you did to me/or what i'll do to you". Album is full of songs about REVENGE and guns and killing. Sure theres a couple songs about love on there. But keep in mind "Helena" was written about gerard and mikey's grand mother, so its going to be somewhat about love. Other than that and "to the end" I dont think there are many songs on there about "love" that arent about revenge. I actualy think both albums are really good, the first however IS decidedly better. They did kind of sell out with this one.

3 Cheers is a concept album, about a man, whose fiancie dies and he has to kill a 1000 men to get her back or something. Proberly where you got the whole idea of revenge from..

You've got me there. Bullets is much darker. But as has since been mentioned, Three Cheers doesn't let up too much. I actually wrote a review on sputnikmusic.com that deals with the theme of that album a lot. Check it out.

I though Gerard was a recovering alcoholic?

brokenfairie 08-15-2005 04:47 AM

i think MCR is a kick@$s band, i've loved em since their first cd, and i think they did a awesome performance last yr at twisted 11 and this yr at warped....but now that my stupid 11yr old sister and all her little teenie bopper friends are "punks" now since I'm Not Okay premiered on TRL, theyve been wtching TRL everyday at my house, singing loudly along and practing their 'moshing', playing MCR 24/7, and im actually gettin annoyed of the band =-(

Get Fighted 08-17-2005 07:13 AM

at first i liked them but now thier music just pisses me off

-:Vincent:- 08-17-2005 07:35 AM

eh...I only saw one of their music videos, Helena (of course) and the dude was wearing so much make up...he looks like a vampire or something. The song was alright (a bit to emo for me though) and it had one nice tom beat. But it's kinda funny how I made that beat up (a version of it) before I even heard them...

tsl_ste 08-17-2005 07:58 PM
