Was it necessary to say that three times?
no, but he did it anyway

Thor 12-28-2004 12:51 PM
The strumming pattern is similar but the notes are different. Only the very beginning of the riff sounds like Kashmir.
RATM didnt rip off Kashmir. Thats a stupid idea that no one should believe.

Guitar Symphony 12-28-2004 01:18 PM

Best solo? Has to be the one used in Settle For Nothing..c'mon folks.
S/T was my favorite and my first love.
Tom Morello is my idol. He made pedals an art form.
Gotta love Know Your Enemy and Wake Up.

munky_magik 12-28-2004 01:26 PM

the best thing I thought about Tom was that he could be so creative without using effetcs

Guitar Symphony 12-28-2004 01:49 PM

yea, he was really good at that as well. He was aboslute genious when it came to guitar comes up with funnest riffs ever.

****, I just read through ten pages of information. I didn't learn too much because I already know a lot about RATM. If you're really into the band I recommend you read the Unofficial RATM faq located here: http://www.accidentprone.com/ragefaq/ramfaq32.txt . This should give you answers to most questions, including covers, meanings of the lyrics and various other information.

About the albums. A few years ago I bought a box set of their three 'real' albums, I didn't like it at first but now I'm really happy I bought it then. By listening to the CDs more and more the group quickly became my favorite. Each album has it's own qualities, but I like the self-titled the most.

Then there's Renegades which I picked up not so long ago. People in this thread said it was lame and uncreative for Rage to do a cover album. I say, listen to the original songs and realise how much changed. For example, Beautiful World, originally by Devo, was a crappy pop song. RATM turned it into an emotional and beautiful song. Then there's their version of How I could just kill a man, originally performed by Cypress Hill. Their version owns Cypress Hills' big time, although when they performed it together it sounded great too.

My favorite song would be Take the power back off their S/T album. It starts off with a nice bass intro followed by really insightful lyrics. I especially like this part:
The teacher stands in front of the class
But the lesson plan he can't recall
The student's eyes don't perceive the lies
Bouning off every ****ing wall
His composure is well kept
I guess he fears playing the fool
The complacent students sit and listen to some of that
Bull**** that he learned in school
Cheers all!
I think Take The Power back may be their most underrated song...it kind of gets overshadowed by a whole load of songs off the S/T, but it contains what I think is Morello's best solo, that break in the song that you mentioned, as well as the "No more lies" section at the end. They should definitely have played it live more.
thats one of my favorite songs off of s/t, and easily morello's best display of soloing. it uses the buildup of suspense very well that ratm has. very underrated indeed. great lyrics to it as well.

Thor 12-29-2004 12:14 PM

Take the Power Back also has one of the coolest bass lines ever. Its just so catchy and you cant help but bob your head up and down to it.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-29-2004 10:53 PM

I've spent the last day and a half learning songs by RATM on guitar. So far I have Born Of a Broken Man, Bombtrack, Revolver, Bulls on Parade(Still working on the solo) Killing in the Name..I think thats it. OH! and Pistol Grip Pump :naughty:

Anyone have any other reccomendations as for RATM songs to learn? I would like to use my new processor, so songs with wah, etc. are welcome.
Brad Wilk must have had the funnest job as a drummer..........he got to play simple wicked a*s grooves all day
He still has that job, but it's probably not as fun becuase Audioslave doesn't kick as much *** as RATM did. :upset:

DonMancini 12-30-2004 12:16 AM

Yes, Take The Power Back is a great track that is often underrated. I have never heard them play Wake Up live either, which dissapoints me. It is definitely one of my favorite tracks.

I always found Testify was great live, along with Freedom (they modified it to say "freedom! for maria!" at the end, which is just so touching and powerful)

superfascist 12-30-2004 01:09 AM

I just bought the Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium DVD today. It doesn't seem like they put excessive amounts of energy in their performances (especially Tom who just seems to stand in one place most of the time with the exception of when he plays the introduction to "Sleep Now in the Fire"). It's entertaining nonetheless.

boasta 12-30-2004 09:39 AM

i actuallyhave seen a mexico dvd, in JB - HI FI but that was a while back, bombtrack is a wicked song :D

It's actually "Freedom! For Mumia"

Educate yourself, it is an interesting case.

icedopethblind 12-30-2004 11:40 AM

hmm, favorites from the CD's I have...

1. Battle of Los Angeles
2. Evil Empire
3. Self-Titled

looks like i liked their evolution as a band better than the previous, heh....all 3 great records though imho...

Rasta Rocker 12-30-2004 12:34 PM

Does anyone know if Zack is in a band, and is it political like RATM?

munky_magik 12-30-2004 12:37 PM

He is now doing solo stuff, and I imagine that it is political although I haven't checked

Thor 12-30-2004 01:29 PM

That is Zack's new project with DJ Shadow, and yes, it is very political.

Rasta Rocker 12-30-2004 02:37 PM

thanks

Not only they don't kick as much a*s as Rage did.....they just completely suck

Rasta Rocker 12-30-2004 02:55 PM

yeah, i dont like audioslave at all. Unless they're doing stuff i dont know about, i think RATM was way more influential.

NuGgEt123 12-30-2004 03:05 PM
Not only they don't kick as much a*s as Rage did.....they just completely suck
...they don't suck at all. how can something with tom in it completely suck?

Rasta Rocker 12-30-2004 03:33 PM

Just cause there's a cool guy and a hell of a guitar player doesnt mean the band is good.

munky_magik 12-30-2004 03:38 PM

ok the whole RATM vs Audioslave topic has been done to death
if this thread degenerates into solely that topic it'll get mowed down quicker than a badger crossing a 6 lane highway

that song sucks.the only good part is when he's like"check on the left.check on the left left right"or whatever he says.

Aside from that, Battle of Los Angelos is my favorite Rage album. :thumb:

Avril's Left Tit 12-30-2004 03:58 PM

1. In any in-depth discussion involving RATM, Audioslave are going to crop up somewhere along the line. It's inevitable.

2. Self-Titled owns anything done by anyone ever.

3. Who do you reckon writes most of the riffs (where the guitar and bass follow the same riff?). If it's Tim, then he's vastly underrated, because the satisfaction you get from hearing/playing a classic RATM riff like the climax of Bullet In The Head or the intro to Freedom is amazing.

4. I would have given my right foot and several of the toes on my left one to have been at the Battle of Mexico City gig, judging from the DVD.

5. I think that RATM splitting up, whatever the reasons, was for the best. Quitting whilst your ahead kind of thing. Imagine if they reformed and released another album that it truly sucked? It would be a travesty.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-30-2004 08:04 PM

In that case, it would be good for them to reform, becuase I liked St. Anger. :D
