Facsimile 12-02-2004 05:17 AM

So what are all of the songs that John uses a 7 string on? I know of The Glass Prison and The Mirror.
So what are all of the songs that John uses a 7 string on? I know of The Glass Prison and The Mirror.
Caught In A Web
Lie
A Change Of Seasons
New Millenium
Dance Of Eternity
One Last Time (he doesn't use the B string much in this song)
Misunderstood
This Dying Soul

I think that's it. I'm not sure about the rest of Falling Into Infinity, but New Millenium is definately on a 7 string.

:upset: :upset: And A CHANGE OF SEASON wont go in the next round.. :upset:
**** that really sucks :upset: I think it deserves to win first, there is so much emotion and thought put into that song.

newWorld 12-02-2004 12:34 PM
Picking up Scenes From a Memory would definitely be cool. Probably not "A Change of Seasons:" that's really one original and a lot of bad covers, so that doesn't really represent the band's compositional skill very well at all. I stand by 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence as their finest songwriting moment in their career if not their finest technical moment, so I would recommend that as well.
I thought the covers rocked. Especially the Zeppelin, and Elton John ones.

biaxident 12-02-2004 12:36 PM

A Change of Seasons is probably the most amazing song ever. The covers are okay, the Elton John one is good but I've never been a fan of Zepplin and I ddn't really like The Big Medley either.

Cain 12-02-2004 12:50 PM

Meh, I don't think the covers were that great. It's a crappy showcase for Derek Sherinian as well.

Quebec 12-02-2004 08:06 PM

I like the covers, but i think they could have been alot better. If Rudess replaced Sherinian... But everytime i hear A CHANGE OF SEASON I forget it all! Maybe firing Sherinian to "hire" Rudess is one of the best thing that could have happened to DT(after the departure of Dominici, of course!)! Anyone feels like me?

Everybody vote for THE GLASS PRISON.
Please.

Glass Prison, and this dying soul. Great tracks :) . The riffage is class.

I love the lead intro for this dying soul. What a way to start :thumb:

ToolBox 12-05-2004 11:53 AM

I just found DT and although I can say they aren't my favorite type of music, I can greatly appreciate the musical talent they have as a band and they are starting to turn me onto a harder type of rock. It proves even if you play metal (would you call it that? I suck with genres) that skill can still be used.

I have been a Dream Theater fan for a little over two years now. My first DT album was Awake, a very good all-around album. But when I got SIx Degrees of Inner Turbulence it completely blew my mind. And then hearing A Change of Seasons blew my mind once again, and to this day it's still my favorite song by any band. What I love about Dream Theater is not only that they are extremely talented and are amazing songwriters, but that they are such a good live band as well. I saw them live in Boston on April 1st, 2004 and it was such an amazing show. Also, John Myung deserves some recognition...it seems that the rest of the band (especially Petrucci and Portnoy) gets most of the spotlight while Myung get's hardly any. And Jordan Rudess is without a doubt my favorite keyboardest in the world.

robnathanson 12-05-2004 03:55 PM

bassists never get enough respect.

BludgeonySteve 12-05-2004 03:57 PM

Hehe, Myung is isane live. You barely hear him during the heavy stuff, but he's playing pretty much the same thing as the guitar.

And that's very hard to do.

I don't think that replacing Sherinian was the best thing they've done. Yes Rudess is an amazing keyboardist and certainly is an asset to the band, but I like Sherinian as well. He just never got a chance to showcase what he's made of. Was it a good move replacing him? Yes, they originally wanted Rudess anyway to take over after Moore. Was it the best thing they've done? No, that title belongs to writing ACOS.

drum_player4life1 12-05-2004 08:21 PM

I love Scenes From A Memory....

I don't know. Rudess is probably the most skilled of the three, and I think they've all had some good contributions.

"Train of thougt" is their heaviest album. But get "6 degrees of inner turbulence" for "the glass prison"(disc1), "war inside my head" n' "the test that stumped them all"(disc2). This is all heavy stuff.

PetrucciFollower101 12-07-2004 08:45 PM

Have you people lost you minds? Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands of our time. You a$$'s are just a bunch of spoiled pansies and want more from these musical masters. John Petrucci is one of the greatest guitar players. Period. He has intense speed on his guitar that is unmatched in any I've seen. Jordan Rudess, how DARE you criticize him. This man was born a child piano prodige, and is unsurpassed by ANY rock keyboardist to date. John Myung is never given a huge solo within which to shine, but can keep up with Petrucci on the fast melody licks. Mike Portnoy is revered as a drum god, and is the youngest drummer to be admitted into the Drumming Hall of Fame(or something like that). I read that some thought that James LaBrie's vocals sucked? That pothead needs to f*cking sober up, his singing is insane!! You listen to gritty Cobaine lyrics, don't you? (@$$) Wake up ladies, we are in the presence of greatness, and we should enjoy it before it fades.

i agree but its a matter of someone's opinion. It's not wrong.

KingEdward5150 12-08-2004 01:35 AM

i listen to stuff from Piosin all the way to Judas Priest...

my favorite 'area' is kind of in between (queensrych, iron maiden, skid row, tesla, whitesnake)

would i like dream theater? is it like 'rapsody'? i do enjoy songs like 'rage of the titans' etc

Cain 12-08-2004 01:36 AM

I think you would like DT a lot based on what you said.

Dont mean to p!s$ people off by falling back on this, but Carey is way more original in his pieces, most of the time, than Portnoy, any Yes fans will reckognise a few of the grooves Portnoy played on 6DoIT copied directly from Yes. And everything he plays sounds very similar, but he's got the fastest hands i've seen. I downloaded a bootleg video of touring into infinity live in newyork... his solo is insane, he goes insanely fast playing like 64th notes (32nd note singles with double strokes) or something like that and it's freaky, that's without breaking it up with the bass drum. But all round Carey's a much more original composer.
there are no shockingly horrible unbareable DT songs, but some are less memoriable than others...

Street Spirit (Fade Out) 12-08-2004 08:17 AM

I also like Carey much more then Portnoy. But Portnoy can play the drums the fastest I've ever seen/heard.

So pretty much echoing the poster above me.

moncholo 12-08-2004 08:35 AM

dream theater, like any other cool prog band, is gonna have the departure od theitr singer, n portnoy is gonna replace him.. like genesis, spock´s beard ,etc.
