Kif's Sunday Recommendations
Sorry I missed last weeks, I was a little busy. Anywho, here's today:

Allister have been on my Winamp for a few days now, and I have to say, it's such a fun album. Before The Blackout is an album which perfectly captures the old days of Drive-Thru Records. Perky pop-punk rhythms, fun lyrics, and no stupid themes and/or screaming. Yes, Allister are back and sound better than ever. If you are getting a little tired of this new style pop-punk, check out "A Study in Economics (FULL)" and "Somewhere In Fullerton" on their Purevolume.

John Connor are a BAND (Not artist) who make indie-pop songs. Their music changes a lot from relaxing to catchy and addictive to damn right energetic and fun. Their debut release Dance Dance Revolution is set to hit stores on the 18th, and has made a bit of a buzz on Myspace and Purevolume. If you want to hear some fun and well-played indie-pop songs, check out "Dancing Mar Occur" and "You've Get Red On You" on their Myspace (Their PV didn't have the first song, which I absolutely love).

Say Anything are getting plays as well, as the re-issue of their cult-classic indie-rock album ...Is A Real Boy dawns near. Now, I personally don't think re-issues nowadays are worth it, slapping a few "rare" songs and a DVD in and price it for $12.99. But the bonus disc of this is worth it alone. 7 tracks which are re-recorded versions of their never-released Say Anything Vs. AIDS CD, they sound brilliant and pure Say Anything angst-rock. If you want to get into this band, listen to "Belt" and "Alive With The Glory Of Love" on their PV.

Neon Blonde are the side-project of Blood Brothers' Johnny Whitney and Mark Gajadhar. Their debut album, Chandeliers In The Savanna, is certainly an interesting listen, and a break from the Brothers' punk mix sound. Piano melodies, dual vocal harmonies, drum machine beats? Yeah, this is a mile from the modern day punk band, but it's an awesome album filled with treats that will make you smile, frown, or at least sit there with your jaw dropped. Check out "Headlines" and "Princess Skullface" on their Myspace.

I haven't recommended any bands in a while, so here are a few awesome one's to check out:

Marathon - I've been listening to these guys almost non-stop for the last couple of weeks. They have a fairly unique sound in that their songs mix catchy lyrics and melodies, with a slight hardcore edge. I defiantely recommend anyone in need of something new check these guys out. You won't be disappointed.

Smoke or Fire - Awesome melodic hardcore band out of Virginia. They are signed to Fat Wreck Chords, and have a sound very similar to that of A Wilhelm Scream. I predict that these guys will be the next big thing to come from Fat Wreck.

Set It Straight - Hardcore at it's best. I've been addicted to these guys over the past month or so, and their music never becomes boring. Their debut, My Favorite Words is probably my favorite hardcore album in recent memory. They are definately a great band to check out for anyone looking to get into hardcore, or expand their musical tastes.

Note: Due to the swear filter, I have no way to enter the myspace for these guys but still check them out at myspace.com/set it straight, no spaces of course.

Anadivine - Really cool band out of New York. They have a sound in the vein of Hidden in Plain View, and their music is awesome. I downloaded a couple of their albums about a month ago, without having ever heard of them, but they are truly an amazing band.

Heartcore 10-09-2005 11:28 AM

Norwegian Bands

Desperado
Political hardcore with alot of screaming and incredible cool sound. A little different from many of todays hardcore bands. Their live shows are ****ing amazing.

Torch
These guys play a really cool mix of emo/hardcore/metal, and is probably one of the top bands in the scene in Norway. Their live-show is even greater than Desperado because of the pyro-effects and lightshows. (The flames reach so high that the managers of the gig fear that they're gonna burn the whole place down)

Rest of my life
Emocore with screaming and amazing clean-vocals, raw energy, long melodic parts and strangely crypted lyrics. Really amazing guys.

Daaven
A band with pop-punk, emo and stone rock influences. Girl by the microphone, a great guitarist, jumping between genre's without ruining the sound, a wild crowd at gigs. That's Daaven.

Chi
A Hardcore/Post-hardcore band, with a raw sound. Almost Always drunk at their gigs. It's really a laugh to watch sometimes

JR Ewing
A Post Hardcore band that has really managed to make a name for themselves in Europe. They're new album got nothing but good criticism by everyone, you should check it out. Saw them live at a festival this summer, and i have seriously never seen a bigger moshpit at a hardcore-gig. These guys rule.

I see the similarities, but the musicianship is really weak in comparison.

They remind me more of http://www.purevolume.com/thetokyosmash in that respect.

Everyone should check out Tokyo Smash, by the way. Really cool band.

(at least for the song from their EP on their purevolume, 1. Without You....(bitching), I haven't listened to their new stuff)

Mute Print 10-09-2005 10:00 PM

A Wilhelm Scream is definately more talented than Smoke or Fire, but Smoke or Fire is still pretty cool. They put on a fun show too.

I'll try checking out Tokyo Smash again later. For some reason purevolume won't load their songs. :-/

Female foursome, i just think you should check them out, i wouldn't listen to them non stop, but have a look how good these people are, they're a bit of a weirdo bunch, but the drummer owned, well at least in the video she did. And by the way, i would listen to 'Running Out Of Things To Say' all day.

I suppose I should give some recommendations for the week, right?

I checked Jenoah's Purevolume today, after realizing they have disappeared for ages and checked out their EP again. Anyway, I found out they have a new song on there, and it is awesome. Regardless of the fact that the other 2 songs up there rock as well, I ask you to check out "Openly" and the new song "Southern Breathing Dreams". They play like indie/pop-punk, and are the band Drive-Thru signed along with Hellogoodbye (Back in the day when DTR didn't sign every band they could get their hands on).

The Maple State are my next recommendation, right after they put 4 new demos on their PV. They are 4 guys from Manchester who play like Early November style pop-punk, extra on the pop. Their sound is pretty great and fun to listen to, and their At Least Until We've Settled In EP is awesome. Check out "Mightiest Monster Mightiest Melodrama Of Them All" and "The Fall Of Shi Gau Rui" on their Purevolume, both are insanely catchy.

In a dying genre, Chiodos breathe a breath of fresh air in this new style of pop-punk. Their debut album for Equal Vision, All's Well That Ends Well, has been well received, proving their mix of harsh pop-punk riffs and strong vocals has won them a great fanbase. If you want to check out this band, listen to "One Day Women Will All Become Monsters" and "There's No Penguins In Alaska" on their Purevolume.

Latterman have quickly become on of prized labels Deep Elm Record's best catches. With their sophomore album, No Matter Where We Go..! out now, their infectious Against Me! style of punk rock and shouting has got the album out there more. Check out "Doom! Doom! Doom!" and "My Bedroom Is Like For Artists" on their Myspace (Unclean! Unclean!!1) for a look into this awesome pop-punk band.

Here's some nice indie pop to wet your appetite, hell of a good in my opinion. Great tunes, and nice vocals.

Can you recomend any type of band in here?

Mute Print 10-18-2005 01:49 PM

I think so. I do all the time.

Ok, ama gonna right some stuff up.

Untitled 10-18-2005 02:11 PM

/My first ever written review thing about a band.....

The Ordinary Boys. (Indie/Brit pop)
Heavily influenced by the jam, the kinks, and the smiths the ordinary boys bring a fun fresh new sound to the scene. With a mixture of horns, guitar, keys and the brilliant vocal of Sam Preston, they have come up with some epic tracks. Id predict most British would be able to recognise a lot of the tracks of “over the counter culture” with songs such as “week in, week out” and “weekend revolution” getting a fair amount of recognition. There recent full length “Brassbound” is a must have, but “over the counter culture” is 100000 times better IMO.
Recommended songs – Seaside, Little Bitch, List goes on. Also any that is on there my space. http://www.myspace.com/ordinaryboys

I know I’ve whored this band lots recently, but I love them so much.

I’ll recommend some more brit pop/indie bands in times to come.

Firecracker 10-18-2005 02:14 PM

Boys Will Be Boys is a good song by them. I've heard them on the radio a few times, good stuff.

As I You
For fans of Haste The Day/Zao/other Christian metalcore. I got their CD today, and it's pretty good.

Edit: Nevermind. It's not that good.

The Format

A great band, I used to listen to them about 3 months ago like non stop and I just popped their CD in today and I remember how much I loved them. It is just two guys from Peoria, Arizona (never heard of it) so go ahead and check them out. I do have 'Interventions and Lullabies' it is a full length release from them so if you enjoy them let me know and I will hook you up.

JamisonParker

I just started listening to them recently but wow, I really like them a lot. The band was formed by two guys, Jamison, and Parker (what a suprise :p) and they have an EP titled Notes & Photographs and a full length titled Sleepwalker. The EP is a little more upbeat than the full length, in fact quite a few songs on the full length are on the slower side. But this doesn't stop it from being great music. So, if you haven't heard them before then I really suggest you go check them out.

P.s. Thanks Brian for talking about them before because I never would have listened to them if you hadn't.

Myspace - http://www.myspace.com/jamisonparker
Purevolume - http://www.purevolume.com/jamisonparker

Recommended songs - Anything. Seriously.

DepthsOfDreams555 10-20-2005 07:33 PM

I started listening to them like a week before Sleepwalker came out so not that long but I haven't heard much of the EP and people tell me it is better than Sleepwalker and I want to hear it. I like Sleepwalker but not that much.

B 10-20-2005 07:36 PM

I'll send the EP to you tomorrow if you want.

DepthsOfDreams555 10-22-2005 10:42 AM

I never even bothered looking back in this thread, ya I would like it, I will just talk to you about getting it next time I see you online.
