His stlye is extremelly unique and in no way does it remind me of classic rock. If you dotn think the guy has talent then you havnt lisened to any of his abums or youve prob heared one or two of his songs. |
That's who it was!!! Today I woke up knowing it was somebody's birthday, but I couldn't remember. I'm buying a friend of mine a Doors keyboard songbook for Valentines day, I'm excited to jam with her. Ray Manzarek kicks ass, I've got one of his solo albums from like '73 or something.
I wish someone would buy me sheet music for valentine's day :( I saw Yes in VT on Labor Day, they were so good, and Steve Howe waved to my dad before the show. He wouldn't shut up about it for a while |
Dickey Betts is playin' on the Grammy...it's sub-par.
|
Dickey Betts and Lynyrd Skynyrd and that disaster on stage at the Grammys was terrible.
|
John Mayer is coming out with a new blues album pretty soon I hear. I personally like John's blues work but not his poppy stuff
|
I don't think in the history of this thread we've bashed Lenny Kravitz, unless you're thinking about on the first 100 pages. Wow, that was a long time ago.
|
Guys remember that American Strat I've been talking about getting since I joined? Well my mom brought one home to try out, and its freakin awesome, so I'm getting it. And the seller is selling his amp as well (Marshall, beats out my Ibanez 10 watt). So when I actually make the purchase, I'll put some pictures up.
|

what is with your Avatar, Malcolm? |
It was mostly me who put down Lenny Kravitz. I didn't make as many bad comments as you guys are making it sound though. I just think that he hasn't grown as an artist since he first came out, sure he writes good catchy songs, but he needs to expand a little more. It worked with AC/DC for a few decades, I don't think he can pull it off for as long as they did though.
So I couldn't buy my friend the Doors book...but I found something almost as good. I bought her the Beatles 1 transcription book for piano, singing, and guitar, and then the 1 CD as well. Now we can jam to Beatles together, which is just as good as jamming to The Doors. I'm gonna buy John Mayers blues cd when it comes out, I don't mind his pop stuff at all, but his blues guitar is spectacular. And that's pretty cool Magicbus, I'm thinking of buying a strat later in the year. I don't know if I want an Olympic white one, or a black one...or what pickups etc. It usually takes me forever to find a guitar I wanna buy. I'm happy with what I've got for now, but Les Pauls don't have the right sound for some of the stuff I wanna play. Man I've been missing this site... |
(Jimi Hendrix) + (Curtis Mayfield) - (originality, talent, creativity) = (Lenny Kravitz)
Also, John Mayer is a demon spawned from the pits of hell. I refuse to support him. |
How come you don't like John Mayer?
|
There were three things I enjoyed about the Grammys, in no particular order:
1) Kanye West's over-the-top performance of "Jesus Walks", followed by his completely honest acceptance speech for his Best Rap Album 2) James Brown making Usher look foolish 3) Ludacris and Kevin Bacon presenting an award together. No more needs to be said. Why don't I like John Mayer? His music sucks, and he looks like one of those insipidly safe "nice guys" that women swoon over. |
Yep. Then again so is Good Charlotte :(. Some teenagers are more cool than others I guess.
yeah i know what you're saying  |

Why don't I like John Mayer? His music sucks, and he looks like one of those insipidly safe "nice guys" that women swoon over.
Fair enough. Some of his mainstream songs are a little hard to listen to, I'm fairly sure he just releases them to pay the bills. His blues stuff is great, he's a pretty talented guitarist when it all boils down..even some of his pop songs have guitar parts I have trouble playing. |

Wow, another quote of something RNR said on page 1... |

Doesn't make them any less abysmal. |

Do you write original, catchy songs that can sell out a stadium while maintaining a musicians integrity and proving you can play guitar better than any other artist to come out in the past ten years? |

How hard is this to understand IN MY OPINION (you clods seem to be fond of that term), John Mayer is abysmal. |
I just asked you a question...chill out. You still didn't even answer my question. You just yelled at me (assuming all caps in large font is supposed to be yelling). And don't use the term clod, I dunno what it's supposed to mean...but it doesn't sound like a nice term.
edit- Tell ya what..I'll repeat my question in case you didn't notice it. Do you write original, catchy songs that can sell out a stadium while maintaining a musicians integrity and proving you can play guitar better than any other artist to come out in the past ten years? Try to answer it this time. |
I. I fail to see how that is even relevent. That's moron logic. It's like not being able to criticize a doctor because you don't have an MD, or that you can't criticize a cook because you can't cook, or that you can't criticize a government official because you haven't been elected, and so on.
II. You write the song "Your Body is a Wonderland", or any of that crippingly lame soft-rock he is fond of making, and you have no integrity. III. What constitutes being a "great" guitarist? |
So to answer the question, no I can't, but it is not relevent to the topic at all. I can say this about any of the bands you dislike.
|

II. You write the song "Your Body is a Wonderland", or any of that crippingly lame soft-rock he is fond of making, and you have no integrity. III. What constitutes being a "great" guitarist?
I happen to like "Your Body is a Wonderland," I see nothing wrong with it. I'm not one of those closed-minded people who say "Oh that's pop/anything mainstream, it sucks." I understand if you don't like John Mayer, everyone has their own tastes in music. But don't call his music abysmal, that's just downright ignorant. I was just defending him like anyone else on this site would defend an artist or band they admired. Lets leave this argument be, John Mayer isn't even classic rock so it's kinda pointless to argue about him here. edit- if you feel so strongly against him, start a thread about him elsewhere and I will come debate against you...not here though. |
I. Yes, and I am one of those close-minded people who say "I hate anything that's pop/mainstream", which is why I think Purple Rain, 1999, and Sign o' the Times are three of the greatest albums ever, and why I even dig all those one-hit wonders from the 80's. All the artists I like are unknown ones like Jay-Z, The Who, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Miles Davis, the Rolling Stones, and Prince.
There's nothing wrong with pop, but "Your Body is a Wonderland" is nothing short of passive, mind-numbing, insipid drivel. II. If I say his music is "abysmal" aren't I basically saying that I really hate his music? You truly are a piss-poor arguer. |
II. If I say his music is "abysmal" aren't I basically saying that I really hate his music? You truly are a piss-poor arguer.
Saying something is abysmal is very different than saying you hate it. I don't like Porsche cars but I don't say they are abysmal...once again, that is ignorant. And I don't come here to argue with the forum jackass about his uneducated opinions, I come here to talk with friends about music. |
Stop fighting
Today I bought... Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum The Byrds - Fifth Dimension Good albums :thumb: Especially Fifth Dimension, because I haven't ran into a pre Sweetheats of the Rodeo album that I completely liked, but now that's changed. |
