American Splendour is also great.

Plan 9 does beat it on quotes, though.

Zappa 02-10-2006 07:17 PM
I have that but haven't watched it yet.

I just watched American Splendor on Tangy's reccomendation. I want to get into comics now.
American Splendor has an empowering element, at least in the beginning. The whole "you can get throw the mundane bullshit and be creative" thing. It's definitely a favorite of mine.

Do it. I recommend Daniel Clowes, Alan Moore, Los Bros. Hernandez and, of course, Robert Crumb.

Am I the only one who sees the uncanny resemblance here?

I've always wanted to get into comics also, but I have absolutely no idea how to start. I bought V For Vendetta a few months ago, and I love it, but that's all I have. Should I just keep getting books, or should I buy individual comics? Are there any certain series that I should check out first?

Kurtz 02-10-2006 08:19 PM

I could sort of see what you mean, but they don't look too similar :-\

A Tribe Called Quest is great by the way.

I usually just buy books. I'm not a die-hard when it comes to buying issues mostly because I spend too much money on music to keep up with monthly series. Plus monthly issues are usually compiled into books anyways after the run is over or whatever. Single issues are fun, but impractical for me personally.

Alan Moore wrote V for Vendetta, I'd say go after his stuff if you like that. Watchmen is his classic one but most of his stuff is good. Hollywood opted on From Hell and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and both of those are better than the movies. In the case of the latter, much, much, much better than the movie. All are in-print and pretty easy to find, so that's a bonus, too.

I'd say from there, just kinda sample stuff. Go to (comic) book stores and leaf through whatever looks interesting. Or pick something up from the library. Following artists and writers is also easy enough. If you like something by one guy, it's usually worth checking out their other stuff.

Zmev 02-10-2006 08:42 PM

I saw this one comic which was heavilly black and green and dealt with characters wearing sunglasses and smoking pot.

I was scared out of the store.

I just searched my library catalogue and they have huge stacks of Robert Crumb stuff. I'm going to go fix up my membership there sometime soon.

I figured that buying the individual comics would be costly and more for collecting. I'll probably stick with books.

I just looked him up on amazon and was checking out his stuff. Watchmen was the one I picked out as looking the most appealing. Apparently I picked well. I might buy that when I finish reading Snow Crash (amazingly awsome book).

I've been to a few comic stores and I really enjoy hanging out at them because there's lots of interesting stuff and I always feel better about myself because no matter what store I'm in, there will always be someone nerdier than me. When I get a fare amount of money I think I'll plan on buying some stuff from my local comic book shop.

Thanks a lot man, that was very helpful.

Most of it is crudely offensive and mildly pornographic. The primary exception is the stuff that is mildly offensive and crudely pornographic. Fritz the Cat is cool, though.

br3ad_man 02-10-2006 09:49 PM

I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the warning.

I've only heard one song by them that I can remember (I Still Love You Julie), but I like it.

br3ad_man 02-11-2006 09:05 PM

hmm, my friend isn't coming anymore, but I think I'll still go by myself. I can do some school work on the train.

EDIT: Not going now. I don't like them enough to justify the effort involved in going by myself.

Radiobass81 02-11-2006 09:41 PM

Second funniest joke ever, according to CNN.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner and a bottle of wine, they retire for the night and go to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend. "Warson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
"I see millions and millios of stars, Holmes" replies Watson.
"And what can you deduce from that?"
Watson ponders for a minute.
"Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies, potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteoroligically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerfulm, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. What does it tell you, Holmes?"
Holmes is silent for a moment. "Watson, you idiot!", he says. "Someone has stolet our tent!"
Can't remember.

It was horrible, though.

br3ad_man 02-11-2006 10:20 PM

A punk band that seem fun to sing along to.
