Didn't David use a slide during the second part of Echoes on LAP? The part where they're all just unleashing mayhem on their instruments? I remember David sitting down during that part.

It might not have been Echoes, it might have been during the song where Roger is banging on that gong. I cant remember.

Riva 11-21-2006 11:06 PM

That gong banging is just so awesome, image wise, especially when they silhouette him against the sun.

MattSharpIsCool 11-21-2006 11:21 PM

They show a lot of closeups of his arms though, and they repluse me. They're so scrawny and covered in disgusting veins. Ick.

But yes, that is an awesome scene.

It's A Saucerful of Secrets.

Leper 11-21-2006 11:59 PM

Pompeii is such a great DVD.
Did anyone know that Syd sometimes used a violin bow in concert?
Probably wasn't that impressive. I've never really thought much of Syd as a guitarist.

Yield 11-22-2006 12:18 AM

I think he was talented, but I don't think that he was the guitar wizard that everyone made him out to be. And I'm still thinking how you'd use a bow on a guitar for single notes. I've tried it and I've gotten nothing. I assume it works best for chords because when you bow an electric guitar, you just end up getting all the other strings. Unless the strings were angled at the bridge, like a cello or violin.

Leper 11-22-2006 12:24 AM

Yeah I think you can pretty much only do it for chords.

Yield 11-22-2006 12:30 AM

But still, the idea of having a custom bridge so the strings are separated like that sounds like a cool idea. But I don't think it makes a big difference in sound, so it wouldn't be that great. The only thing I can think of is a different kind of string, more like cello and violin strings. it would change the sound a whole lot, but the strings would be more costly.

Jim 11-22-2006 06:25 AM

You could just play the cello :p In any case, Jimmy Page also did that and it really only just made random noise and wasn't cohesive with the music at all.

Wow, progressive!!!

Riva 11-22-2006 07:25 AM

Well, he did do it first, or so we're led to believe. I guess there is something in that.

rippa32 11-22-2006 09:31 AM

I thought it was entertaining. You could definately distinguish different chords while he did it.

magicbus 11-22-2006 09:33 AM

Nah, Jimmy Page got it from somebody else. I can't remember who at the moment, but I've read that he "borrowed" that too.

Collis 11-22-2006 11:39 AM
Nah, Jimmy Page got it from somebody else.
That could be the phrase that describes his whole career to be honest; but eh I can't complain Zeppelin are great.

I know that. that's why i thought that different strings might help. but since it wouldn't make much of a difference, it would just be a waste of time.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 11-22-2006 02:28 PM
But seriously, Spence, I nearly pulled out a rant until I realized it was you posting. Heh.
It brings me much satisfaction that I almost tricked anyone, especially you.

Syd Barrett and the guitarist from *The Creation (Eddie Phillips) are supposedly the first ones to use a bow on guitar in concert.

They make those, actually.

That's cool.

I am, so thank you very much for the recommendation.

Meatplow 11-22-2006 06:28 PM

Brain Damage is such a simple but undoubtably powerful song to play. I learnt that the other night during a depression binge lol, made my night.

rippa32 11-22-2006 07:43 PM

I love the lyrics to that song too. The metaphors in that song beat the entire Animals album in my opinion.

MattSharpIsCool 11-22-2006 08:12 PM

I can understand why some people consider Dark Side boring, but god damn if you listen to that album straight through, it really is a complete masterpiece.

Apocalyptic Raids 11-22-2006 08:14 PM

Yeah, I love the way it flows.

The production is great too, it just sounds amazing.

MattSharpIsCool 11-22-2006 08:18 PM

Its pretty much one 45 minute long song.

rippa32 11-22-2006 08:43 PM

Except for money.

Yield 11-22-2006 09:10 PM

Money is an intermission.

rippa32 11-22-2006 09:13 PM

Haha. :thumb:

It would have made a great non-album single I reckon.

Yield 11-22-2006 09:16 PM

yeah. I used to love money, but now it's one of my least favorites from the whole album. Time, Breath and Us and Them are my favorites.

rippa32 11-22-2006 09:18 PM

It used to be Time for me. But now it's definately Us And Them/Any Colour You Like. Any Colour You Like is such a unique instrumental.

Riva 11-22-2006 09:36 PM

I love Money. And besides, didn't it get the highest in the charts out of all Floyd songs?

My favourite song(s) from DSOTM is probably Brain Damage/Eclipse, actually. :p

MattSharpIsCool 11-22-2006 10:00 PM

The last three songs are probably my favorite bit from Dark Side. They all flow together so perfectly. I'll listen to Any Colour You Like on my computer, and when it's done, I'll have to listen to the next two or it feels unfinished.

Although Time is my favorite stand alone song on the album.

rippa32 11-22-2006 11:44 PM

I tried to learn Time on guitar once. Its not the most difficult thing to play apart from the timing. To play those notes at the start would take a ridiculous amount of precision.

Danger Bird 11-23-2006 12:20 AM

My favorites are Any Colour You Like and Eclipse. I think Eclipse would be just as good without Brain Damage.

rippa32 11-23-2006 01:36 AM

It dunno, it wouldn't be as good without Brain Damage setting the mood first.

MattSharpIsCool 11-23-2006 01:50 AM

Eclipse works by itself, but its not nearly as good without the other two.

If nothing else, you at least need Brain Damage/Eclipse.

Jim 11-23-2006 02:32 AM

Eclipse is the pay-off. I like it when it builds up through the other songs - it's just that little more epic :)

ghettoeddo 11-23-2006 02:51 AM

i have the wizard of oz set to dark side of the moon.

it's odd...but it strangely fits pretty well

MattSharpIsCool 11-23-2006 03:23 AM

Haha, it really does fit.

The best part being "Great Gig" and the tornado.

ghettoeddo 11-23-2006 03:24 AM

did they plan that? or is it purely coincidental?

MattSharpIsCool 11-23-2006 03:26 AM

The band says it was just a coincidence. But I've heard somewhere that whenever the interviewer asks them about it, Roger says nothing. And seeing as he wrote most of the album...

It seems like it would be a pretty amazing coincidence if thats really all it is, because some of those parts are pretty spot on.

ghettoeddo 11-23-2006 03:28 AM

yea it can't be purely coincidental...
