...I am so getting Roger Waters' In the Flesh DVD next paycheck...

Bartender 10-31-2004 07:27 PM
I read The Odyssey, The Aeneid, The Republic and Metamorphoses this year. The classics are great.
I'm gonna be buying The Odyssey and the Iliad for £1.50 together some time this year

I've already got Crime and Punishment, War and Peace, Don Quixote, De Profundis/The Ballad of Reading Gaol (Oscar Wilde) and The Prince (Machiavelli) for a tenner..I love it. Almost makes up for the complete lack of decent metal.

Permanent Solution 10-31-2004 07:27 PM
I love The Oddysey. A lot.

I know it isn't really a classic, but has anyone read "The Silmilarion" by Tolkien? The first part, with the world being created by a symphony of music, is really mindblowing.

That's still about $13 dollars U.S.
No, and, sucks to be Aussie :p

I didn't like The Prince, it seemed like common sense to me, so it was boring. Maybe I am just better than Machiavelli ;) :p

Yeah, it's pretty hard-going sometimes as well, but that's not surprising considering it's a tactical treatise for a Renaissance ruler, not a novel. It does have some great examples in it though (like Agathocles).

The Iliad wasn't as well written, I thought. But I love mythology, so it is all good. Seeing as you do Philosophy, Bartender, have you read Sophie's World? The storyline is a bit weak, but some of the concepts are really interesting.

Bartender 10-31-2004 07:33 PM

I haven't, no, but I remember it being mentioned as a good philosophy book in the Book Club thread in the Pit (was it you that mentioned it?), who's it by?

Permanent Solution 10-31-2004 07:35 PM

We read it in 8th grade, it was really long winded. Really good though. Look into it for sure, don't remember who it's by though :/

Bartender 10-31-2004 07:39 PM

Fair enough, I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm off to bed now though, as it's coming up on 2am.

We read it in year 12. That is to say, I read it, then re-read it, then re-read it again, while the idiots in my class struggled with the fact this book had paragraphs.

Try American Public schools :smash:

So many idiots.

Riva 10-31-2004 09:41 PM

Australian public schools are pretty much retardation defined. We don't have "special" schools here, smart, dumb and moronic are in the same class.

Riva 10-31-2004 09:50 PM

thickasabrick 10-31-2004 10:41 PM

ya i ended up with a lot of emails/phone numbers. i remember one time i was sitting on a big chair playing guitar, and this one girl came up, didnt say a word, and just started massaging my feet. at that moment i realized what heaven was all about. so many hot girls.

i kinda have a gf though, and she was there. so i would usually just sneak into her room at night.

Crafty...but as long as these girls weren't Catholic, you could have probably done better :p
Crafty...but as long as these girls weren't Catholic, you could have probably done better :p
well it was kinda strange...because i ended up making out with one of the girls right in front of my "girlfriend". it was so awkward cuz i didnt know what to say.

and i say "girlfriend" because we used to go out, but we would always break up over nothing, and we found if we just remain friends with benefits than we never argue about anything. so technically i can date other people, but im burning a very pleasurable bridge.

thickasabrick 10-31-2004 11:47 PM

im going to bed...what am i doing up this late.

goodnight everyone, sleep well, for tomorrow we may all die.

Man, listen to this ****. We played a show Friday night. Everything was killer, large crowd, all the music was right on, the load in went perfect, no sound issues, just a great show. We made an *** load of money too. Well, we have another show Saturday night. Same kinda build up, everything should be perfect again. Well, Saturday about 11 am (show starts at 8) our guitarists girlfriend calls my bass player and says that our guitarist quit the band.

Well, he didnt call us, didnt even try. We call him non-stop and he won't answer. He has done **** like this to other bands in the past, just decide to quit and not say anything to anyone, just quit showing up. Needless to say I was ****in furious. Well, he has had issues with his hearing and tinnitus. When we finally got in touch with him (we had to literally corner his vehicle to talk to him) he said he was quitting over the tinnitus thing.

The tinnitus thing is a good reason to leave the band, no doubt about it. I am pissed about the way he handled his exodus. If you play with people for as long as we have and you consider them friends the least you can do is talk to everyone. There is no doubt in my mind if his girlfriend hadnt called us we would have all been sitting there, in front of the crowd, waiting to start.

So, were looking for a guitarist, gonna start holding auditions soon. We have a TON to offer too so I guess we can be picky. Check out www.stagefrightband.com for the ad.

Anyway, if I seem bitchy thats the reason.......

RideTheSpiral 11-01-2004 12:44 AM

*hands Stagefrightken an ice tea*

I totally know how that feels man...

I just got back from my a friend of a friend's halloween party, and I'm like so frickin tired, but I was having so much fun. Smashed pumpkins, watched the Exorcist, played Halo, scared trick-or-treaters, went trick-or-treating with this girl I met at the party (just us two), and we headed back, got dessert, and I tried my hand at Halo.

I wish you the best of luck on finding a new guitarist. :thumb:

Wow dude, that totally sucks. I thought you were being a bit testy in the site forum. Now I totally get it, I feel bad now :upset: Best of luck finding a new guitarist...if I wasn't all the way across the US I would try out heh. I really hate it when people pull crap like that, I know how that goes. That's the best I can do for you dude, go beat up some homeless people or something, make sure you do something fun. Hope everythign works out :thumb:

SonorKen 11-01-2004 01:42 AM

hahaha thanks guys, its gonna be a pain in the ***. We cancelled everything for next month so we can audition and then work with whom we pick. The guy we had was phenominal, Im not kiddin when I say this, he is probably one of the best unfound guitar players. He has alot of personal issues that probably kept him from being discovered.

Its gonna be tough to find someone to replace him. The other tough thing is going to be weeding through all the people who want to audition, its going to be a mess...

Anyway, ya said you were playin Halo, man, I can't wait till the 9th. H2 is gonna rule. Some guys at work have been downloading it so I may actually get to play it tomm. I have a modded XBOX (which is the only way to go) so if they have it finished I'll be playin H2 tomm.. I'll post up some screen shots if I do.
