Question: How do you pronounce preterite?

Josh 09-04-2005 01:53 PM

on the whole Hadrian's wall thing, in Roman times i would have been in Scotland, as i'm 10 miles north of the wall, but Ollie (Lord Abortion) would have been in England, he lives just south of the wall.

in other news, the night before last i ran over a deer when i was driving along the road by Hadrian's Wall, stupid bugger smashed a panel into the radiator, fortunately it's not broken. i was pretty lucky considering i was doing 60mph when it ran out in front of me.
Question: How do you pronounce preterite?
As in a type of verb form expressing or describing something done in the past?

pret-er-it.

Bartender 09-04-2005 02:01 PM

It seems an odd part of the phrase "association football" to use, though.

Shadows 09-04-2005 02:02 PM

Football as in American Football is even less likely. I don't understand where that came from at all.

i am the robots 09-04-2005 02:02 PM

Yep, that's the one. Thanks. I can read phonetic, but not the pseudo phonetic alphabet dictionary.com uses and I couldn't find my English Pronunciation Dictionary.

Gaol is still an awesome word, by the way.

NP: Ramones - Psycho Therapy

Josh 09-04-2005 02:05 PM

in hexham you can visit "the old gaol".

Jelle, is it not a real pain learning english, as words like "cough" "through" "bough" have the same endings but completely different sounds?

Shadows 09-04-2005 02:06 PM
The kickoff?
It would make much more sense to call it "Hit Ball", "Block Ball", or "Physical Padded Endzone Ball" or something along those lines.

Can anyone tell me what "lytte til avrette Norsk sort metallisk" means?

It can be annoying yes, but I think I know most of them by now.

I know it's Cuff, fr00 and baw, at least I think so. ;)
I think the reason why the US has a good team now is because maybe you guys are around 50 times larger than England? So i think you have quite alot more players to choose from. The difference is that the very best British athletes play soccer/football, while the very best American athletes play basketball, American football, and baseball.

Regional history: I lived in Chicago, which at least had a famous book (The Jungle) and a famous poem (that poem by Carl Sandberg) written about it...I guess it has SOME kind of history but I never really bothered looking it up. Of course, I was born there, so you know it's great.

And I grew up in Boston..."Most Important City in American History", anyone?

You just described every american university student, practically.

You did forget about being ultra politically correct, though. Speaking of the PC crowd, and the fact im watching last action hero, im surprised PC crusaders havent sued schwarzeneger yet to change his last name to something else, because it does translate to, and im not even joking: Black Nigger

I had thought about the same thing. But does the "neger" part really translate to "nigger"?

EDIT: Woah, I just looked it up. His name is offensive in his native tongue.

I endorse that first part. Apart from the great weather and great beaches, the city offers nothing New York or Chicago doesn't.

Why? Just because your from Boston? I never got the whole city rivalry aside from sports.

yes, there is no other translation for Neger, it has never had any other meaning.

Ray: Must be your ghetto accent. :p

And I think it would mean 'negro', not nigger. Which is a lot less derogatory.

It originally was not that offensive in the german language, but in more recent times has become as offensive as the english n word.
Philly? DC?
Philly comes close.

But come on, which city was the birthplace of the American Revolution?

Boston.

There is lots of other stuff too that I learned in US History a few years ago but I can't remember it.
Why? Just because your from Boston? I never got the whole city rivalry aside from sports.
No, it's more of a Chicago thing. Chicago has been stuck with the demeaning (to me, at least) nickname "The Second City" because of New York, and frankly most New Yorkers look down on Chicago for the most part.
Ray: Must be your ghetto accent
Speaking of that, my uni is thinking about teaching ebonics as a foreign language option. Not joking either, its in discussion right now in the languages department.
yes, its all a hoax, i was never actually in germany, and cannot speak the language.
Yeah, you can't even speak English, since you don't understand the meaning of 'most'. ;)

Illmatic 09-04-2005 02:31 PM
It doesn't work like that. Britain's best athletes are tennis players, runners, rugby players aswell as footballers. Being a footballer involves a lot more than simply being a good athlete. I was always good at football, but it doesn't mean I'd have much aptitude for baseball or basketball. They're completely different concepts.
Well, my point is that our great athletes start playing baseball and basketball and football instead of soccer when they're younger, which means they gain aptitude in those sports instead of soccer.

For instance, let's say that Bo Jackson (widely regarded as one of the best American athletes ever when judged solely on raw athleticism), instead of playing Pop Warner football and Little League, chose instead to pursue soccer. Then he would have become an elite soccer player rather than an elite football and baseball player.
