Well they may not be the best, but I love US Soccer and I will suppourt it no matter what.
I don't love them. Ya I support them and all... but I'm not that big of a soccer fan. off topic- i did go see Maryland vs. Navy. that was an awesome football game |
If we win the World Cup or at least make it very far, I will personally invest every cent I own into taking a trip into Europe and laughing at all the European soccer fans who talked shit about Team USA.
Speaking of college football, and college sports in general, I am so sick of all the East Coast snobs who trash the Big Ten. |

Well, here in Mexico, Soccer is like the "king's sport", sometimes is annoying, 'cause we don't have sport variety, so all you can see on sundays is soccer and everyday, the sport news are about soccer. |
I used to play soccer when I was younger 'til my legs gave out. I can't even run now, according to the doctors :upset:

Doctors at Duke couldn't even figure it out. It's somethign wrong with the joints in my knees. I can easily dislocate them if I am overly active and when they pop back in, they occasionally go in slightly crooked and always hurt like hell. They told to stay away from any sports and running or else they may get worse. |
Well that can be said for plenty of European countries too. Still, I'd be willing to bet that if America groomed its kids for more than just internal sports it could dominate everything. America has the best sports and training facilities in the world and if enough people switched to the game, America could easily dominate. But the US still doesn't have that great of a team.
Because there's no money to be made in soccer in America. Most of our top athletes move on to basketball, football, and baseball because that's where the money is. Average MLB salary - $2.49 million(source) Average NBA salary - $3.7 million, circa 2003 (source) Average NFL salary - $1.17 million, circa 2001(source) Average MLS salary - I can't find the average, but Landon Donovan is the highest paid player in the MLS at $900k (source) And even then, the NFL numbers are decieving because a lot of contracts are incentive-based. |

And yet Australia with it's less-than-world class facilities, 1/11th of the population and a younger history of sports still manages to give you guys a run for your money in every sport except Baseball. :)
Because there's no money to be made in soccer in America. Getting so much money for something they love to do. :p |
Alright, due to unforeseen complications in yesterday's schedule, I wasn't able to put up my spotlight on Rusted Root. But it will be up today sometime around lunch.
|
Does anyone know where the word "soccer" came from? Football seems pretty obvious (American football slightly less so, but still), but I've no idea how soccer came about.
Anyway, good morning. |
good day all
I wnet to The Island yestersday, anyone seen it? I really like the concept, and the acting was quite ok too. Sean Bean played a very very good role IMO. the concept is sort of similair to 1984 by George Orwell |
Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the Association several months later. The name Association Football was coined to distinguish it from Rugby.
By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer had made its appearance by 1895.
Good morning to you, Bartender. So, I had a great time last night, I got tipsy off a six-pack of Bundy's, so I think I need to start exercising my liver again, lest I become a Cadbury. |

Funny you should mention that. Myself and Andy (ThrashMaster) were both a little tipsy in the thrash thread last night ;) |
Exactly. My one British friend loves talking **** but Im always like, "you know the US is just as good if not better than Britain these days" he goes "the system is flawed, if we played we would murder you guys".
It's true. Because of the amount of really good teams in Europe, European teams aren't able to get as many points for the FIFA ranking. While the only other decent team against whom the US regularly can play against, is Mexico. And the reason Europeans say it as well, is because the US team has been good only very recently. They used to suck and no one denied it, give the Europeans some time to accept that they got better. You would lose against England though. RAy: I'll remind you of that when they do get far. |
I think the reason why the US has a good team now is because maybe you guys are around 50 times larger than England? So i think you have quite alot more players to choose from. We only bitch because Rugby and Football are things that are very important to the average persons life.
|
And if we're talking regular teams, Europe is far superior. Spain, England, Italy, ... all those countries have at least 4 super teams.
|

Anyway, good morning.
Dictionary.com says it's "from alteration of assoc., abbreviation of association football." |
are you talkin about football?
yesterday poland won 3:2 against austria ... yeah... GREAT... i'm so happy. |
USA beat Mexico 2-0, and we are now qualified!
I heard Ukraine qualified as well. Reagarding all the talk about the US team: We used to suck horribly, and are now having a bit of success. Is it wrong to be proud of our team, even though we are a huge country, etc? I honestly think we can give any team out there a run for their money. |
I hope Australia qualifies :(
At least if they don't, I can bitch at FIFA for reducing Oceania's spot. |
Do you guys have any big names on your roster?
|
Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka. Thats about it.
|
Never heard of 'em :-/
Which clubs do they play for? |
Kewell plays striker for Liverpool, and uhhhh I forget who Viduka plays for. They both used to play for Leeds a few years back.
|
Your avatar is bringing me back to my youth :-D
It makes me want to break out some old school games. |
haha :D
I nearly changed it to the wolfenstein man a few days ago, but he only looks around :( Whenever I used to play Doom, I would use god mode. I didn't know any better. |
God mode meaning that you couldn't be killed?
That takes all the fun out of it. |
Today is Kim Thayil's birthday. Most people will know him as the lead guitarist from Soundgarden, and a very talented one at that. He's 45 today.
I really don't get to watch football that often, as it comes on cable and I don't have cable... We have the Charleston Battery though, so whenever I can, I check up on them. I am one of the few Americans in my school that refers to "soccer" as football and "football" as American football. I will be making sure that I check up on the matches that come up on regular broadcast... |
It looks like I am going to see Bodom with Chris (cjborton).
Sweet. |
