I never went through I Van Halen phase, but I had a small Ac/Dc one.
For about a month or two I was really big on Van Halen, then Hot For Teacher stopped being so jaw dropping, and seemed more like everything. I really think if the wanted to Eddie Van Halen could add a lot more to his songs, but stuck with just the tapped out solos.

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 06:02 PM

Regardless of how much Eddie Tapped, he defintaly brought it to a new level. I still dont think theres many people who can touch the peak of where he brought it. Ive tried learning Hot for Teacher (my favorite Van Halen song), but the intro tapping was too far apart...2 frets to long for my left had to handle, so i stuck with You really got me.

Eddie deserves all the credit in the world for being a phenominal guitarist, but then again, he does have the edge by releasing a 1 1/2 insame guitar solo 'eruption'. Most guitarist save it for the concert, though i heard its even better and longer during theirs.

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 06:04 PM
edit- I used the Shroom one as my msn pic.
Haha, yeah. I knew youd say that...i was gonna mention it, but didnt wanna say anything that i could get busted on. Im sending that to my sister now, i know shell like it - since i got her into some 60s/70s.

Yeah he does deserve a lot of tapping credit, and I'm not one of these Van Halen sucks people, I just wish he could have used that tapping ablity more then he did, or to try somthing different after a while.

Its ashame how bad he lost in the voteing thread...he might not be the best there...but he wasnt worse then all of em. I wouldve given him a sympathy vote, but it was sortta pointless. He has some really impressive stuff on clean guitar too...sorttof like Eddie is to Modern(er) music, as Hendrix is to 60's.

Hendrix is too known for his work on Are You Experienced...Axis is 10x better IMO

I think Electric Ladyland is much better than Axis. Although Axis has some great songs, EL is just an overall better album.

ATM 05-02-2005 06:22 PM

I like Electric Ladyland the best.

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 06:24 PM

I love the songs on AYE, but the solos are so frikkin sloppy. The guitarwork overall is poor, and improves alot on Axis. So i love the songs as a whole, but not the guitarwork.

Except Fire. That song just ****in rocks.
Little Wing is probably his best display of guitar work (clean-wise)
And i got this album 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun' a few months ago, which i like alot, but are they just songs that didnt make the albums by the time he died? Thats what i was told, but i dont know where they came from

Yea, you're right. They were songs to go on a next album that was never finished.

lunch998 05-02-2005 06:28 PM

I'm usually a whore for debut albums, mainly because the tend to be more raw and representative of the band's live sound. The studio refinement is all well and good, but I'd rather listen to AYE than Axis because of that.

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 06:29 PM

They pretty good. Stepping Stone i think is Jimis best guitar solo on any of his studio albums.

Room Full of Mirrors>other songs on First Rays

Woodstock 05-02-2005 06:30 PM

I rarely listen to AYE because of my local Classic Rock station killing every song for me.

I think Voodoo Child is his best studio solo, though lets just comprimise and say when he playes Steppin Stone in the middle of Voodoo Child at Woodstock (and Berkely, but Woodstock is better) its just amazing.

I only have this 4-CD compliation (One of them got lost) from 1989 or so. I believe it is called "Dreams". I love what I hear, I really should get Eat a Peach

pigonthewing82 05-02-2005 06:51 PM

You know everybody always says Randy Rhoads's tone is horrible, its been a while since I listend to anything but the Tribute, or bootlegs, but I really don't see anything wrong with it. Am I missing somthing?

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 06:54 PM

Im defintaly gonna write down what albums i need to buy. Eat a peach has been suggested before...i just cant remember a dam thing.

Beatles - Let it Be...Naked
Yes - Fragile
Deep Purple - ...dammit I forget, but its not machine head.

Those are all fantastic albums. Go buy them right now.

Deep Purple, is it Burn, In Rock, or Made in Japan?

Walrus Gumboot 05-02-2005 07:03 PM

There is a song on Yes's Fragile that is called The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus) where the only lyrics are "Schindleria Praematurus", which my guess is the latin name of some fish. I love it, especially how the transition between it and the song before it (Long Distance Runaround) is just so trippy. Yes is so underrated

I have too many, but ummagumma and Fragile are also on mine. I own Eat a Peach and Wheels of Fire, as well as the regular Let it Be, and I'm just not a huge Hendrix fan, I have a greatest hits and its plenty for me.

BTW- sweet avatar Canadian guy. That's the cover of the bootleg series live '66- the "Judas" concert, right? That tops my wanted albums list. I think I'll get it this friday because I just made 20 bucks

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 07:07 PM

I think its Burn. I really need more Purple though...got enough Pink  only 3 albums away from completing that collection.

Im really into yes too. I got The Ladder and Magnification for $5 each (though they were both damaged...just bad picks off the rack), and they were pretty good. Nothing special, though i dont like how happy-go-lucky some of the songs are.

Spirit of Survival is by far one of my favorite songs

Walrus Gumboot 05-02-2005 07:10 PM

I like The Yes Album, I should get it on CD. Maybe after I get my harmonicas in D and G, Eat A Peach and a haircut

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 07:12 PM

Haircuts are for losers
/hasnt gotten on for 6 months
its barely past my eyebrows though....:upset:

The Yes album is great. I cant believe it didnt make the top 100 albums here. The clap is probably my second or third favoirt dual guitar solo ever, even though it is acoustic. And that riff at the end of Starship trooper is my favorite part of any song...ever

I saw him do the clap live, it was awsome
You mean the part in the last 1/3 of the song? I love how you don't want it it end because it it so spacy, and then it doesn't... gahh I love that song.

That's because if you don't cut it, it won't grow fast.

The only Yes I've heard is "Roundabout" and the album - Yessongs.

lunch998 05-02-2005 07:18 PM

Roundabout is amazing, but I haven't gotten around to Yes yet. Eventually I will.

Seafroggys 05-02-2005 07:18 PM

In Rock is excellent Deep Purple. Since I got it, its really grown on me. Bloodsucker, Flight of the Rat, Living Wreck are all great. But Child in Time is one of the best songs of all time. Well worth the album by itself.

Yeah I love how the keyboard picks up right where the solo leave off, and how the song seems to get more and more intense as it goes on.

And I know they wern't directed at me, but thanks for the growing hair tips, I'm trying to regrow mine after it was cut (against my will).

Distant Echoes 05-02-2005 07:22 PM
Get somebody to trim it for you every couple of weeks, it'll grow faster.
I barely see how that works...maybe explain a little more? but dont go too in depth, nobody cares that much.

Ill probably just pick up the first Deep Purple album i see at the store that i heard of. Their a great band anyway, i trust them to have some good albums.

And before i go, does anybody here play bass? I might get one, but have absolutely no education on the world of bassism (i made that up myself). But seriously, i need a few things on finding a bass. The guys in the forum are cool, but dont give enough info...
