What kind of music is this, like hardcore or what?

Metalcore, in the vein of Taken/Misery Signals.

Which is weird, cause their older stuff is deathcore, and this was released right when the deathcore trend was starting (2006).

well they ditched the metalcore elements.
they wanted to embrace their southern side.

whether they are more lame or less lame is determined by which side of them of them u prefer.

that being said, i loved "the big dirty" and "hot damn" but this is meh
