unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 12:04 PM

yes, by all means...

then again, I don't recommend practicing without one.....ever

sweeping, for me, was all about learning how to mute with my picking hand, and getting a nice, fluid motion from the picking hand. Once you have those down, its all about synching up your hands.

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 12:18 PM

kk. so say i start off with an easy sweep, like:

--15-12-----------12-15-12
---------13----13---------
------------12------------

at about 100bpm

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 12:22 PM

i would start at 1/8th notes in that case

repcak 10-10-2006 12:23 PM

i would play it that way:

15p12---------12
-------13---13
----------12
(as far as i remember... )
and don't start at 100bpm ... i play this shape for over 6months now and the highest speed i reached was 60bpm
start with 50bpm and six notes each beat

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 12:24 PM

yeah. is this starting to basic or should i just try some 5 string sweeps but really slow

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 12:28 PM

il record myself playin that sweep soon, at 100bpm, and then you can see whether i need to slow down or speed up. i dont practice enough :( i play guitar everyday, but i just write music, or play some bodom stuff. nothing productive, it really stressed me out last night, i was watchin bodom live in tuska 2003, and just watchin how much alexi could own solos and sweeps lol i was like grrr i dont practice, im not gettin anywhere.

repcak 10-10-2006 12:30 PM
yeah. is this starting to basic or should i just try some 5 string sweeps but really slow
first maste the 3string sweep, then move to 4string sweeps.

i play only 3string sweeps now for 6months and i only play from time to time 4string sweeps - but only the easiest shape of all on 4strings ;)

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 12:35 PM

actually, I wouldn't do the repcak thing and do 50 bpm, sextuplets....eeeek that's too damn confusing...

also repcak 100 bpm, 16th notes is actually slower that 50 bpm, sextuplets, but anyway...

play that at 100, 2 notes per beat. If it doesnt sound perfect, take it down to 80 bpm, or even 70

repcak 10-10-2006 12:55 PM

slower yes, but 3string sweeps are in general played as triplets or sextuplets... if you play 16th, the beat would be on another string each time... and thats confusing.

i would do it either triplets OR Sextuplets... 16th or 8th notes can be played if you do 4string sweeps.

btw. in the guitar forum you said you alternate pick everything - even if you play three notes per string? and do you start always with an downstroke even if you make chromatics (1234) and do an ascending chromatic run?

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 01:01 PM

no, i don't always start with a downstroke. For the example you gave (3 notes per string)

it would be down, up, down for the first string
then up, down, up for the second string
down up down for the third, etc

as far as practicing those sweeps are concerned, it really makes no difference. Think about it, its 6 notes. Its divisable by 3, and also 2, which means if you did it as 1/8th notes, it would be 3 beats, which is hardly a problem

The trick, or goal, is to slowly become comfortable with the technique, and slowly increase the tempo as your proficiency increases, there fore it wouldn't matter if he practice them as 1/4 notes, as long as he is maintaining proper technique and working on perfection

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 01:03 PM

yeha 3 string sweeps are easier as triplets i would have thought. so 12 notes a bar then, at 100bpm

repcak that was aimed at unknown solider wasnt it?
i just said hoorah in that thread lol

EDIT: k, gotcha unknownsoldier

MRDuCran 10-10-2006 01:04 PM
I need to change my guitar playing from righty to lefty so I can reach faster speeds. :-0
I'm left handed and I played right handed, my speed is just fine.
slower yes, but 3string sweeps are in general played as triplets or sextuplets... if you play 16th, the beat would be on another string each time... and thats confusing.

I agree. I always play 3/5 string sweeps as 3's or 6's.

On a side note, I bought myself some DR strings, 11-50 :D:D

And they taste great. :p

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 01:04 PM

if you want to get technical...

1/8th notes at 100 are easier than triplets at 100, but again, the tempo of the metronome is not the issue here

DuCran : DRs are the only shizz I buy now :chug:

quoted for truth!!!

ah, yes.. sorry. you meant 2notes per beat... i thought you meant 4notes per beat -> this would be a problem.

i do it:
d,u,d - 1st string
d,u,d - 2nd string, etc.

upwards:
d,u,d,u,d,u - high e string
u,d,u - b string, etc.

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 01:07 PM

thats economy picking repcak. There's nothing inherently wrong with doing things that way, but i find that my timing is more uniform, and it seems to confuse my picking hand less

wow... they are ... thick

i still play on 9-42/46, but i should try out DR stings next time... i heard too many good opinions about them :D

every guitarist plays differently ...

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 01:11 PM

yea, you gotta go with what works for you, no question about that

MRDuCran 10-10-2006 01:13 PM

I advise Metalhead_Matt to try the sweep at this speed for starters:

http://download.yousendit.com/2B09CCE600EDB19D

It's actually slower than I started at but I've never had a problem with getting the left hand muting down.

repcak 10-10-2006 01:13 PM

hey, mitch, i had an idea yesterday while i was falling asleep... what do you think if we do a song together? maybe a cob song? i play the rhythm parts (which i should be able to play :p ) and you will record the lead-parts?!

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 01:20 PM

lol at mitchs 'taste good' post. ive got that video on my myspace. im checkin out that tab now

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 01:22 PM

il work with that tab, thanks

Hmm, sounds like a brilliant idea but I'm not sure if I'd be able to play one of the solos PERFECTLY. You know how much of a perfectionist I am. :upset:
lol at mitchs 'taste good' post. ive got that video on my myspace. im checkin out that tab now

:D I actually went into the shop and said:

"Do you have any D Addario strings, 10-50?"

After he said no and I came back, I asked:

"Oh wait, it's not 10-50, it's D Addario 11-50, you got those?"

After he said no again, he directed me to 11-50 DR's.

Then it fucking hit me that those were the ones I wanted from the start. wtf

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 01:38 PM

lol excellent. ive been meaning to try out those strings, gonna have to get some ernie ball 11 - 50's instead, coz i dont think they sell DR's round here :S

repcak 10-10-2006 01:38 PM

lol

we don't need to play the whole song, solo included - it would be ok if we skip the solo ;)

MRDuCran 10-10-2006 01:41 PM
lol

Well what song do you have in mind?

When I bought the strings, the guy told me the people that make them have stopped supplying them to the shop that I go to so there's only like 4 packs left. After that, I'll have to get them elsewhere or just use Ernie Balls again. I might not even like the thickness of them yet.

metalhead_matt 10-10-2006 01:47 PM

yeah i was quite surprised when alexi said he used them, especially seeing as hes a lead guitarist. let me know what there like :) wanna try em myself but restringing floatin trem guitars is frustrating, i like to do it as little as possible lol

repcak 10-10-2006 01:48 PM

no, i don't have a song in mind... first of all i have to play guitar again... so we have time to decide on one - a song both of us are able to play.... and not tooooo fast ;) the max. speed i've reached is about 120-140/150, so it shouldn't be faster.

any suggestions?

btw. is alexi using 11-50?

unknownsoldier12 10-10-2006 01:53 PM

im runnning 10s at the moment.

I swear by DR strings myself. I refuse to by anything else now

MRDuCran 10-10-2006 01:53 PM

Yes, Alexi uses 11-50, haven't you seen the video. :p

Well there aren't many songs that are under 190bpm...off the top of my head:

Red Light in my Eyes pt.1
Bed of Razors
Bodom After Midnight
Children of Decadence
Kissing the Shadows
Sixpounder
Angels Don't Kill
Triple Corpse Hammerblow
Living Dead Beat
In Your Face

repcak 10-10-2006 01:57 PM

no i haven't seen the video :(

this is a nice list... i would prefer something from their older albums, so not In your face and livind dead beat.... but how i said... first of all my wrist should be healed and afterwards i will need some weeks to get where i was before :(
