Just throwing it out there, most of the "screamo" you listed is post hardcore.

eh, if there were a solid definitive way to categorize bands like the ones i listed into post hardcore i wouldn't have even poped my head into the emo/ screamo thread

apples to apples i guess
Just throwing it out there, most of the "screamo" you listed is post hardcore.
Truth. But there is also a flaw in that argument. Do you see similarities between fugazi and the other bands that started post-hardcore, and today's post-hardcore chiodos? It's just as bad of an argument as the screamo thing. They're not the same at all, but because of classification, they're labeled as such regardless.

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 02:34 PM

Chiodos is as similar to Fugazi as Guns Up! is to Minor Threat, or Suis La Lune is to Honeywell, or Through The Eyes Of The Dead to Entombed.

Do you see where I'm going with this? Genres evolve over time.

iamrockzorz 12-16-2009 02:35 PM

False. Chiodos is not as similar to fugazi as guns up! is to minor threat. They sound COMPLETELY different. Post-hardcore is to hardcore as post-punk is to punk. and maybe this is post-post-hardcore, but is sure as hell ain't post-hardcore.

Xomblies 12-16-2009 02:37 PM

yeah, and i prettymuch said that in my last post saying there's no definitive method of categorization, which is why i understand your frustration when someone comes in here saying what i said. but because of that lack of differentiation it's inherent that these bands are included in multiple genres, even if some don't agree. Unfortunate yes, but nothing to get angry about, not saying that you are at all... just some people immediately wrote me off as some schmuck who doesn't know anything...

 i guess

iamrockzorz 12-16-2009 02:40 PM

**** genre in any cases, music is what it is. Genre only exists because the consumer's mind can't grasp identifying things on a large scale without the help of some nuancing term. Listen to what you listen to. Even worse, genre classification helps to create scenes. Sure that's a good thing, but way too often it lends to a restrictive elitism that is pretty lame.

yeah i think it's safe to leave it at that, music simply is...

so chiodos is screamo right?!?! lol i'm just fuqin your butt

iamrockzorz 12-16-2009 02:49 PM

Come on guys. Punk is supposed to be communal. Leave unnecessary debate for the indie kids.

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 02:54 PM

Gnarmageddon 12-16-2009 02:59 PM

thinking about starting a christXdemonXsurfXoldskool rap core or technojazz ambient tribal band. anyone want to join?

IgniteYourAvail 12-16-2009 03:00 PM

yes

NOTindietrash 12-16-2009 03:49 PM

didn't know people actually used the term post-anything for serious. more ambiguous genres don't exist. also post indicates that something's finished. neither rock nor metal nor hardcore nor whatever is finished, so post-whatever doesn't even make sense.

Iluvatar 12-16-2009 03:51 PM

it makes sense when you take it in the context its used and dont go all english nazi on the term yeah

Glitterati 12-16-2009 03:54 PM

post-rock is just the remainder of rock left over after an epic dragonforce solo

christsimpson 12-16-2009 03:54 PM

@John
no it doesn't. have you seen how people use post-rock? it's everything from Sigur Rós to Rites of Spring to Slint to Explosions in the Sky to The ****ing Used.

it's silly. usually it's used on (instrumental) math rock. so why not just say (instrumental) math rock? and leave Slint and Mineral and whatever out of it? it's a stupid genre.

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 04:09 PM

You're acting as if Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky are the most unsimilar bands ever?

And I've never, ever seen anyone call Rites Of Spring or The Used post-rock....

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 04:10 PM

I'll make you finish so fast you'll lose sensation in your legs for weeks.

Post-faggot

flesh 12-16-2009 04:12 PM

post-rock is used by the art college student who can't even get his cashmere sweater taken off by a girl in his art loft before the end of an 'epic' hour long song by a band from some icy country.

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 04:17 PM

that wasnt funny :/

christsimpson 12-16-2009 04:22 PM

Sigur Rós and Explosions in the Sky have similarities obviously. where does Slint and Moss Icon come in the picture? either way the former ones are somewhat ambient math rock bands and the latter are emo bands. let's leave it at that. it's soooo much easier and non-stupid.

also do you know what the definition of post-rock is? "bands that use rock instruments but don't play rock". WTF IS THIS ****. so like half of every band ever is a post-rock band? yeah, great genre.

the only people who'll ever use that term seriously are hipsters, art college students and music journalists.

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 04:40 PM

Well, I don't know anybody who calls Slint or Moss Icon post rock...

Post rock to me, and most people who use the term is extremely ambient "rock" music without vocals I would think

christsimpson 12-16-2009 04:43 PM

Slint and Moss Icon like started the genre which is based off of uh everything from the 80s. I think even Wikipedia states that Slint invented post-rock or whatever.

post-rock to most people is math rock. usually ambient and/or instrumental math rock. but the definition of post-rock is "rock instrumentation used for non-rock". which is ironic since the tag usually is thrown at math *rock* bands lol.

Matt? 12-16-2009 04:45 PM

do you seriously think of moss icon as a post rock band

serious lol

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 04:50 PM

oh well we all know wikipedia is right about music

cradle of filth is vampiric metal

Xomblies 12-16-2009 05:45 PM

i just came up with this new genre that will solve everyone's debate here:

"the best"

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 06:06 PM

it involves nothing but breakdowns and dubstep

Xomblies 12-16-2009 06:07 PM

noe noe, that's post medio-core

witchxrapist 12-16-2009 06:19 PM

I c wut u did thurr

So I burned this cd for a friend who only knows pretty well known skramz/emo:
1. The Fall Of Boss Koala - No, Everything's Not Alright
2. Jupiter Lander - A Game For Two
3. Yagé - Ohne Form
4. Van Halen - Jump
5. Nostra Monté - If I Lived In The 1800s I'd Be Hanged For Adultery... And I'm Not Even Married
6. Aghast - Telescope
7. Heather Grey - Tandem Bike Extraordinaire
8. Sed Non Satiata - Les Colonnes De Soie
9. Eucalypt - A Spotlight
10. Harrison Bergeron - Darkness Washed Over The Dude
11. Maggat - Cycles Perfecta
12. Serena Joy - Movement III
13. Malevolentia - Cultivo De Una Nueva Semilla
14. Sinaloa - What We Could Not Move
15. Grown-ups - Surprise Party

Dude, you're insane. That show is gonna be sooooooo ill.

cobert 12-17-2009 12:22 AM

van halen wrote some seriously ****ing sweet songs

I'm always tempted to put a weird song like that on mixes I make for people but every time I do they lol as if it was a joke. except it's not because sometimes i just want to hear Keep On Rockin' In The Free World in the middle of all kinds of other ****.

iamrockzorz 12-17-2009 12:34 AM

Okay. sorry to respond to something a page ago. But "post-" is a classification that is all encompassing. it is just what comes after. It doesn't mean that whatever is prior to the "post-" has to come to an end, but it's just something that has progressed past whatever comes after that "-".

Post-rock, maybe not so much. But post-punk, post-hardcore, and post-modernism for sure.

Iluvatar 12-17-2009 12:42 AM

post-post

mindblown
