you should really practice it both ways....

you should be doing it both ways. try down up down (15 12 15) and up down up (15 12 15)

you could practice it repcak's way, but that style of economy picking is actually slower...

if you wanted to do proper economy picking you COULD do it down down up, but again, you would run into the same problem

repcak 10-02-2006 01:49 PM

down up down (15 12 15) and up down up (15 12 15) :thumb: -> best way to play it

MRDuCran 10-02-2006 01:50 PM

I only practise it strict alternate picking starting with a down (outside picking)

unknownsoldier12 10-02-2006 01:53 PM

well, obviously i would incorporate economy of motion, if thats what you favor.

I like to get reference points in my head as to the best way to pick the strings individually. Ill even practice that for a few minutes until i have EXACTLY how I would down stroke on the 15s, and the upstroke on the 12th.

At that point, it's all about having that change come through when you speed it up.

Also, if you are having problems with outside picking, come up with some licks that are all about string crossing/outside picking

Most people favor outside picking, hence the fact I like to practice both in tandem.

repcak 10-02-2006 05:32 PM

i'm not 100% sure, but i think my wrist is healed...

my wrist feels normal - it doesn't hurt anymore :D

Agreed. I don't see the problem with that riff, though I haven't heard the song.

Needled 24/7 intro solo has something similar to that.

Shadows Within 10-02-2006 09:38 PM

Anyone going to the Palladium, MA Amon Amarth, COB show?

Po0sH 10-03-2006 01:05 AM

Dude wtf, they aren't playing in SF, CA man!! WTF!

MRDuCran 10-03-2006 07:27 AM
Agreed. I don't see the problem with that riff, though I haven't heard the song.

Nope.

e----12-----
b-15----15-

That's what I'm talking about.

Please refer to the first exercise in Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock I video to see how it should be played. :thumb:

ghettoeddo 10-03-2006 08:57 AM
i don't see whats the problem with this lick...

e-----------12---------
b-12-13-15----15-13--
--d--u--d---d--d/u-u/d.

i would pick it like that... its not that hard
that's...quite odd.

i'd just go alternate all the way. if you start on down, that gives you inside-out picking which is easier than outside-in

MRDuCran 10-03-2006 10:17 AM

That's what I'm using, I never use economy picking, except sweep picking. But I suck at that now.

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 10:37 AM

inside picking is faster (considering you cover a smaller distance) but it gives people more problems, generally

as far as people "having a problem" with that riff ----->

it all depends on the speed to which your technique starts breaking down, and the syncopation between the two hands are compromised

repcak 10-03-2006 10:56 AM

how fast can you play it mitch?

MRDuCran 10-03-2006 10:59 AM
how fast can you play it mitch?
I'm not saying. :upset:

I can play stuff on one string, 6 notes per beat at 130bpm but on different strings it's more like 110bpm, and that's PG type perfect. But that's when I'm WARMED UP!! Usually, I can hit 80/90 if I concentrate...which isn't great.

repcak 10-03-2006 11:01 AM

c'mon say it....

on the other side your recordings are all much faster!!! you already recorded some 190bpm fast solos...!!

MRDuCran 10-03-2006 11:08 AM

Yeah but that was all on one string and I can do that stuff pretty easily, I just haven't worked on going through the strings enough.

I can do it, I just need to get to the point where that's easy too. Actually I was playing loads of 3 notes per string exercises the other night at 70bpm with ease, just going through everything and seeing if I could do it. So at last I know I'm there for sure.

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 12:26 PM

that's not too bad Mitch. I will say at least you know your weakness. If I were you, thats all I'd concentrate on for a while..

that and your picking hand

MRDuCran 10-03-2006 01:23 PM

Yeah that's what I want to start doing. Hopefully I'll get the whole day to do it.

I was thinking about Paul Gilbert and how quick he got good.

He started again at 9 after giving up at 6 and then got good and appeared in guitar magazines when he was 15...he got like that in 6 years...that's amazing.

He was then a guitar teacher at GIT when he was 18.

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 01:33 PM

eh, im really not impressed by that at all, considering ive been playing for 26 months...

I think it all has to do with your approach, and how much you "want" it (passion)

AA-12 10-03-2006 01:39 PM

I'm going to sound like a total **** and whatnot here, but I don't care. If I really put work into it and really pushed myself, I guarantee you guys that I could be an extremely respected guitarist in the industry at a very young age. For some reason though I just don't have the drive.

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 01:43 PM

no, it's true...

like I said before, thats really the deciding factor if you want to be good at anything (passion)

metalhead_matt 10-03-2006 02:07 PM

i used to think that. ive only been playin about a year and a half, never had a guitar teacher or anythin, but i can play laiho's solos. hate me is my favourite at the moment, its got everythin in it.

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 02:12 PM

I don't think anyone is this thread has a guitar teacher...

That being said, I would love to find a teacher that fit my needs, but those are extremely hard to come by in this area

metalhead_matt 10-03-2006 02:22 PM

yeah thats what im after aswell, someone who suits me. very hard to find here aswell

repcak 10-03-2006 02:23 PM

i have a teacher... well... i go to him once in two months maybe and till yet he explained theory to me...
tbh. its not really a teacher... i hardly go to him

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 02:24 PM

that's one of the big reasons I want to become a teacher. Sure, I don't yet understand all the theory I really should, but as far as technique is concerned, I have yet to find a teacher with better technique.

metalhead_matt 10-03-2006 02:34 PM

btw is there an easy way to changin a 8 bars of music from C#m to Fm?

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 02:37 PM

im not exactly sure what you are asking

are you asking for a lick that could link up those 2 chords, or what?

metalhead_matt 10-03-2006 02:43 PM

no ive wrote this section that is in C#m, and i want it played again later in the song but in a different key, preferably Fm. but im havin trouble changin the notes, it sounds wrong

unknownsoldier12 10-03-2006 02:46 PM

its probably the key of the music that is off, or doens't mesh well...

give me an example and I can see if it helps

You could also jot down a list of the notes you are playing in C#m, and just use a different mode, which is what I would do. It would be the same notes, just arranged differently.

If you wanted to keep the same intervals, you might have to change up the notes
