Yeah the drums aren't bad they just dont sound as good as they did before. They don't stand out.
|
Yeah well I completely agree with that. The drumming in EGN was more than great. It's just that seeing some comments here it made me think I wasn't getting something because some people said the drums suck in SiB.
|
Yeah, they don't suck, they're just lower in the mix than they were in EGN, and the drumming was part of what made EGN so awesome.
The Receiving End of It All is so fucking awesome. |
Hmm, being a drummer I'll back up that yeah, they're not as high in the mix, which is usually done to try and hide some of the "boringness" of them, but seriously, it's some decent playing, just not as active. It's just not all together as musical as the previous album.
But FAR from sucking. |
The fade in intro of One foot in the gas is a reversed guitar, there is a quiet cymbal hit at the very beginning as well.
yah. i donno, i felt the need to proclaim this. |
Beung a non-drummer, I thought they sounded better than on EGN.
|
omg omg the new album is finally out?

It's not out, but it leaked. |
the more i listen, the more i love it..
today i was listening, while reading the lyrics, and it made me like it so much more aswell.. real love grows over time! |
That's happening to me as well. I'm at the point where everytime I listen to the album, I like it more than the last one.
|
Mhm, I'd agree. It's some sweet shit, that's for sure.
|
For me, it was love at first listen.
*swoon* |
I loved it at first listen but I love it more and more everytime.
|
Ya the drumming was really great on EGN, but I imagine there's gonna be differences in the musicianship considering the change in band members over the past 4 and a half years. How's the bass this time around, seeing as I am a bassist.
|
What is the exact line-up for this album?
Is there anyone besides Tomas that figures on both the new one as well as EGN? I can't think of any other band that has changed their line-up in the same manner that Streetlight has. |
According to wikipedia the trombone player has been in the band for both albums, but other than that I don't think so

I haven't assimilated it (if you know what I mean) as much as the bass in EGN, but it's easier to listen and there's some awesome lines too. They feel quite similar except this time you can hear it all the time without too much problems. You know the kind of parts when you hear horns and guitar with distortion first and then the same horns but ska-ish guitar and a totally crazy bass line? I mean like in That'll be the day. Well, it's in here too. |

I can't think of any other band that has changed their line-up in the same manner that Streetlight has.
after the initial hecticness the band calmed down quite a bit... quoting an old post i made in this thread...
Stuart Karmatz left and was replaced by Paul Lowndes Jim Conti took the place of Pete Sibilia. Paul Lowndes left so Chris Thatcher joined the band as his replacement, and has been with Streetlight ever since. On the album, Jamie Egan played both trumpet and trombone, but as he would not be able to do this live Mike Soprano joined on trombone. Josh Ansley announced his departure to pursue an acting career. Chris Paszik performed in his place. Egan left to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his music teaching job at North Brunswick High School in North Brunswick, New Jersey. Delano Bonner came in to play trumpet. Dan Ross had planned to leave after the The Ska Is Dead 2 to pursue a business career, and was forced to leave early just before the end of the tour due to a family crisis. He has been replaced by Mike Brown. Sometime between December 3, 2006 and July 3rd, 2007, Delano Bonner left the band. Sometime before the recording of Streetlight's new untitled album, Matt Stewart took over Delano's spot at trumpet. (In order of departure) 1. Stuart Karmatz - Drums (no reason given) 2. Pete Sibilia - Tenor Saxophone (no reason given) 3. Paul Lowndes - Drums (left? no reason given) 4. Josh Ansley - Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals (acting career) 5. Jamie Egan - Trumpet/Trombone (family and teaching job) 6. Dan Ross - Alto and Baritone Saxophone (business career/family crisis) 7. Chris Paszik - Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals (not even mentioned) 8. Delano Bonner - Trumpet (no reason given) Matt Stewart on trumpet (Joined July 2007) Mike Brown on alto and baritone saxophone (May 2005) Jim Conti on alto and tenor saxophone (was on EGN) Tomas Kalnoky on guitar and vocals (was on EGN) Pete McCullaugh on the bass guitar (????) Mike Soprano on trombone (was on original touring lineup) Chris Thatcher on drums (was on original touring lineup) So I mean the only real changes in the past few years have been Matt Stewart, Pete McCullaugh and (2 years previous) Mike Brown. Everyone else has been around since EGN/their first tour. Id probably put it on something to do with the horn players not being able to live off of what they were getting paid because Tomas writes all the song (little if any portion of album sales) Streetlight isn't huge. They support their own tours and recording and whatnot. Plus I'd have to say I might be a little ticked if I didn't make the kind of money I was expecting... It's always about money.
|

I think the bass work on Failing Flailing is top-notch |
I think the bass work on Failing Flailing is top-notch
Yeah me too. I love it when it follows the drums roll then goes right to some cool scale at the end of it. Well with this album I only remember 2 or 3 parts right now where the bass is awesome but I still haven't payed too much attention. I'm still listening to the album as a whole. |
I personally love the new album as much as EGN, but then again I play guitar which has remained more or less the same between both albums.
|
I really don't think that what instrument you guys play should carry that much weight with how much you like an album. After all, albums are meant to be appreciated as a whole not by individual instruments.
Unless you're White with hair down to your shoulders then you only listen to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. |
Thank you Doug.
But as far as I remember, Jamie Egan was on the recording for the new Keasbey Nights, even though he had already quit touring. I wondered if any of the old members like Jamie or maybe Dan Ross were on the new album even though they don't tour anymore. |
I heard that Jimmy Hoffa plays sax on one of the songs.

I was not judging the album because of the bass work. I was judging the bass work in the album because of the bass work (ah, the redundance) which is different. I really don't care if the bass is good or not as long as the song or the album is, the only difference is I won't like to play it that much. I preffer playing Streetlight on bass than let's say Propagandhi any day but I totally love both bands. |
Album was on sale at the New Jersey show tonight. Did anyone go?
|
maybe Ry Ry went, probably not though
|
By Ry Ry you mean IsItLuck? right?
|
no I mean Reiner
|
oic
Because IsItLuck? probably went as well. Lucky bastards. |
Two Days.

for what? |
I just heard We Will Fall Together and it was really good, I've decided not to download it and just buy it when it comes out (I'll take everyone's word that it's amazing)
|
I've got an e-mail from Interpunk that says that my copy is already on it's way to my hands. I just really hope that it'll make to the relase date.
|
don't get your hopes up everyone, canadian release date is next week apparently, FML.
|
I bought it at their show.
Suburban Legends got their van, equipment and merch stolen outside of philly, so they didn't play. I forgot that The Stitch Ups were fronted by Mu330's Dan Potthast, so getting a few Mu330 songs was a nice surprise. He's a great frontman, but he has a lot of trouble catching energy in recordings. I bought their album too, but it isn't nearly as good as their live show. |
Who are these bastards that keep stealing ska band's equiptment?
|
my guess is it wasnt a straight out stolen van. It probably was just someone they kind of knew running away with their stuff.
|
It absolutely ****ing kills me that a bunch of my friends are seeing them tomorrow and I'm not going. :(
