I do like the broken chords in Bleak..

Jake it is set for September I'm pretty sure.
what are the broken chords in bleak?

I like long albums too even though I prefer quality too. For example, some of Symphony X's albums are just too short, and their songs are so incredible that I wish they lasted for 10 min at least, or the album had like 15 songs instead of like 8 or 9.

lost_profits 06-30-2005 11:58 PM

And the same applies for MAYH

The first half is a blistering assault of perfect metal--

April
When
Madrigal
Demon
Credence
Epilogue

For me, Karma and Amen Corner don't seem as focused.

Amen Corner is incredible...Madrigal+Amen Corner is how the album was meant to be listened to.
Karma is hated by the band themselves.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-01-2005 12:06 AM
Meh...quality over quantity. Of course, you can always have both, but #1 comes first for me.
Yes, and the bands that can combine both are the ones that have become my faves.

Tool
Porcupine Tree
Opeth(new found fave)

And many more, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head at 11pm. :p

bbal-I think he was reffering to the chords at the intro of Bleak, where they sound almost carnival-esque, if you will. :p

Ted- I wish I had thought of something cool like that for my name.

Ekaj Nirvaw

 I never realized how close my last name backwards resembles nirvana.

Especially by Martin Mendez, it's his least favorite of their songs.

Grey Incision 07-01-2005 01:05 AM
You've heard a crappy quality track from a whole album.. please don't base your decision on that track and it's quality.. You should at least wait til' you hear it all man. Opeth isn't dead.
no, if you read my post carefully, i said the last 3 albums have been progressing that way, they are still called Opeth, but to me, it is a very different band to the one that made MAYH and Still Life. The imagination doesn't seem to be there anymore. I know D & D were rushed, but even still, they are very fine albums in their own respect, the fact that this was not rushed, and yet it still sounds similar in fashion to D & D is a testament to the fact that perhaps Mike is moving towards something else? Yes it still is Opeth, but to me, Opeth was MAYH and Still Life, even Orchids and Morningrise.

So before you have a shot at me for judging the band to early, be aware, this is my opinion, Opeth won't be what it used to be.
Dirge and Funeral Portrait turn me off the latter half of 'BWP'. If BWP consisted of:

Leper
Bleak
Harvest
Drapery
Patterns
Blackwater

it would be a perfect album.
The Funeral Portrait rox my sox. That's the headbangingist song on that album (not nearly the best song, but it's still awesome).

Alright.. if that's your verdict. I agree with you that older albums seem to be a bit more complex and maybe more focused.. but Opeth is far from dead.. that is the main thing that bothered me with your post.

That's the first song I heard by them. I hated screaming/growling and that stuff at that point, but that song got me hooked. I love the 2nd (of 3) solo in that song. Then I bought BWP and saw what Opeth really is, with all the soft stuff, and I was convinced of their greatness.

No: "Least favourite Opeth track: Dirge for november"

Ripped from the site.

Your thinking of Lopez.

I love Dirge...jesus.

Its fun as hell to play, and its a very unique song from Opeth.
It doesn't sound like a lot of the Damnation material or other acoustic parts they have done.

I don't know.....it just strikes a chord with me (pun fully intended)

Taste_My_Scythe 07-01-2005 12:43 PM

I actually don't think I've heard it.
I actually don't think I've heard it.
Its on Blackwater Park

who hasn't heard it?

Dried Muffin Remnants 07-01-2005 12:54 PM

Dirge for November is a quality track.

My favorite is either The Drapery Falls or The Leper Affinity. Bleak is awesome too.

Lateralias 07-01-2005 01:07 PM

Mine is either the title track or The Leper Affinity.. Harvest is up there also.

Txus 07-01-2005 01:26 PM

My favorite is bleak or to bid your farewell.

Deth 07-01-2005 03:10 PM

Bleak is by far my favorite on the album, though when I first bought BWP it was The Drapery Falls for a while.

PeEpHoLe_10 07-01-2005 09:28 PM

The Lepper Affinity is my favourite off BWP, and probably my fav Opeth song over all. That solo at 2.40= Orgasim.

Deth 07-01-2005 09:33 PM

I think they have better solos myself, some off Morningrise are incredible.

PeEpHoLe_10 07-01-2005 09:40 PM

Im not that big a fan of Morningrise for some reason. Maybe i need to just listen to it more.

Cain 07-01-2005 09:41 PM
I think they have better solos myself, some off Morningrise are incredible.
Really? I thought Morningrise had pretty bad solos. I think Still Life had some of the best.

On the other hand, I'm a rare Opeth fan that, while enjoying Morningrise, nevertheless takes a rather dim view of its actual compositional cohesiveness. :p

So far, it's also my fave. I agree about it being fun to play. Although a bit tricky for me at the moment, I'm sure I'll get it down smoothly. The chord chagnes in the intro just flow so perfectly.

My favourite Opeth solo is in 'The Twilight Is My Robe'. It isn't hard, but it such a friggen amazingly good sounding solo

That's my favorite solo also, White Cluster's solo is pretty cool off Still Life.

Biancazzurri 07-02-2005 06:05 AM

Does somebody know details about new album that is going to be out in september or so?

Fallen Zero 07-02-2005 06:33 AM

I don't know if this was mentioned somewhere in this thread earlier, but has everyone heard the new song called "The Grand Conjuration"? Its apparently from Ghost Reveries. I can find the link again if anyone wants it.

Tele_Dude 07-02-2005 08:20 AM

Oh, i want..!

Opeth is one of my favorite bands.. Favorite track is probably Master's Apprentices.

It's supposed to be out during August-September. That general time period. That's what their site says.

No, I'm with you. The melodies are incredible, and the band had alot of really great ideas, but alot of the songs felt like they didn't have very much focus or direction. Advent rules, though.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-02-2005 12:19 PM

Are you guys doing any cover songs? I know I heard you guys had some songs in the works, but are there any finished products as of yet? I'd love to hear em. :D

Best part of the whole song IMO.

Txus 07-02-2005 05:42 PM

My fav. opeth solo is the second solo from Black rose Immortal.

PimpDaddyKabZ 07-02-2005 06:02 PM

Forest of October is a pretty sick solo too.....

Its sounds so evil, I love it

It's kind of sunk into obscurity, so I'm in a screw it attitude right now.

Lateralias 07-02-2005 10:00 PM

Wow so I noticed that if I actually follow along with the story in MAYH it makes the album much better... anyone ever tried to follow the stories in MAYH or Still Life?

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-02-2005 10:14 PM

Are they concept albums based on books or what? If so, what books?
