i'm having a lot of trouble getting into GY!BE. Is there something wrong with me? I listen to the songs, and I enjoy them to an extent, but I don't find them any better than average. Should I just give it more listens till it catches on?
|
Yes.
Which album(s) are you listening to? |
Life Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven and Yanqui U.X.O.

why not F# A# (Infinity)? |
I picked those two randomly.
Have no fear though, I'm going to listen to it all a lot more. It just hasn't really done much for me so far. Hopefully I can eventually hear what everyone else seems to hear in the band. |
To Jaga Jazzist: Yes, they are f'ing good, and A Livingroom Hush is sooooo much better than What We Must.
Yanqui is their worst album, in my opinion. Here's my GY!BE story: I listened to the first half of F#A# and stopped because I thought "Goddamn, this is boring ambient bullshiat." I spent the next 6 months thinking I didn't like them. Then I finally got up the nerve (and time) to try them again, so I resolved myself to listen through the entire discography. I listened to F#A# and then thought "Holy crap, this is really really good. I still don't like the ambient parts, but there are a lot less of them than I remember and the other parts are incredible!" Moved on to "Slow Riot..." and found that enjoyable, albeit not amazing. Listened to "Skinny Fists..." and found that just as amazing as F#A#, and possibly even more haunting. As I've said, Yanqui was crap to me. Just give it some time. What I had to do was, as I said, take a 6 month break between trying them and enjoying them, and in that time I explored and branched out into post-rock so that when I came back I was able to appreciate GY!BE more. |

I have "Skinny Fists..." and I had a hard time with it. I was pretty bored. |
On a rainy day when you don't have anything to do just sit back and listen to it. or load up yahoo and play a card game that you don't have to pay too much attention to and just listen to the whole thing.
|
Well I listened to Skinny Fists and pretty much loved it from the off. How could you NOT like those first 10 minutes of Storm? How!?
|
it won't take me 6 months. i assure you of that.
EDIT: I just gave F#A# a listen for the first time and I enjoyed a lot. Maybe I just chose the wrong albums to start with. |

Jaga Jazzist isn't that good. It's pretty cheesy and reminds me of music you'd hear being played over a mall PA system. :-/
|
Wait what? What kinds of malls do you go to?
I like it, it's just generally upbeat jazzy post-rock. And it's pretty bombastic, especially on A Livingroom Hush, which is why I like it more (more energy). |

Don't be silly. Go listen to "Right in Two" :p |

:)
I'll do that when I get home from work. |
Jaga Jazzist and elevator music are both good listenings.
|
they don't have music in elevators where i live. :p
what albums shuld i get first though? a living room hush or what we must? |
What We Must tbqmfh.
|
Yeah What We Must is my favorite. Every track is notable. All I Know Is Tonight has that ****ing killer smooth little melody and is my favorite track, Stardust Hotel and Oslo Skyline have that really happy upbeat jazz sound going, Swedenswhateverthe**** Rom and Mikado are moodier pieces, and I Have A Ghost has that awesome little xylophoneesque thing that sounds so cool.
|
yeah, i really love all i know is. it's so smooth.
|
It actually depends on what you're looking for.
What We Must is more varied and diverse. A Livingroom Hush is more energetic, bombastic, and "jazzy." (imo) But yes, All I Know Is Tonight is probably the best song they've done. Edit: The first 4 minutes or so of Agalloch's "Limbs" sounds like something Jesu could have done. |
No love for the Stix by Jaga Jazzist? It's the only album I have by them aside from What We Must but it's pretty much on par with it. I have yet to hear A Livingroom Hush though, but what I've heard from it is great.
|
