I bought Pulse yesterday and watched it today. Pretty cool stuff. Their live show was unbelievable.

But Sailing the Seas of Cheese is good too. Way good.
Yeah, Claypool's vocals are so awesomely weird, and his bass is just dirty as hell. It's just a cool album all-around, my first by Primus. I've heard good things about Les' solo career too, very good things. Something about an entire cover album of Animals? Sounds killer.

magicbus 08-01-2006 12:37 AM

Yea the Animals cover isn't bad. In fact, it's spot on, which is why I'm not really into it. I was expecting a Les-ified version of the songs, but they're pretty similiar to the originalsl. Played well nevertheless.

BigTrav415 08-01-2006 11:48 PM

Haha, I would half-hope for/expect a Tommy The Cat-style vocal breakdown, Les is so ridiculous. Did he even jazz up any of Roger's relatively bland basslines? I'll try to find it in stores, it's called Frog Brigade or something, right? I think I want some more Primus too.

I'd actually really be interested to hear a supergroup of awesome musicians playing Floyd songs, instead of one of those tribute albums with a bunch of seperate unknown weird electronic bands and stuff.

Carrionshine 08-02-2006 01:20 AM

I remember I bought The Wall movie long before I had even heard the album. I couldnt even make it half way. I finally bought the album a few months ago and decided to give the movie another try and OMG I fuckin love it.

FatalEnergy 08-02-2006 02:27 AM

Primus does a cool cover of Have a Cigar as well. Has anyone heard that?

BigTrav415 08-02-2006 11:59 AM
Primus does a cool cover of Have a Cigar as well. Has anyone heard that?
To make a long story short, I heard the Primus version before the Pink Floyd version  The first day I ever listened to Pink Floyd, which was the day before I went to my dad's house and listened to DSotM on vinyl, I just decided out of nowhere to check out this band I had heard mentioned a few times. I'd never heard anything by them or anything, none of my friends or family listened to them, you catch my drift. So I downloaded a few songs off Limewire, I remember Run Like Hell, Brain Damage, Wish You Were Here, and Have A Cigar, which after I downloaded it said it was by Primus. It was a pretty good version thinking back on it.

I just read a rumor that PF might be getting back together for a Syd tribute gig. As unlikely as it sounds, the more I think about it, the more it sounds like a good excuse for them to get back together, since they've all expressed mild interest in it.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Breathe damnit breathe (ok lame reference out of the way). Anyways, I don't think they'd do something like that as it might seem like they're using Syd's death as a publicity stunt. Not to mention Roger is still touring for a while, Gilmour is just finishing up a tour, Wright will be working on a solo album, and I'm sure Mason will try to join F1.:smoke:

So upon recent listenings and meticulous study, I've reached the conclusion that Wish You Were Here totally and unquestionably ass rapes Dark Side of the Moon. So sayeth I.

I think SOYCD alone rapes Dark Side of the Moon. To be honest I never saw the big deal. I mean don't get me wrong its a great album, but there just isn't enough jamming on it compared to Pink Floyd's other albums. I usually stick to my many live bootlegs of Dark Side of the Moon where there is, by no stretch of anyones imagination, lack of jamming.

Riva 08-02-2006 11:46 PM

WYWH has always been better than DSOTM. It's a fact of nature.

Danger Bird 08-03-2006 12:39 AM

Anything before DSotM>Anything after DSotM

Jaundice 08-03-2006 01:04 AM

I just don't see how Dark Side of the Moon is as sacred as people make it to be. It's a good album, but in my opinion, it doesn't deserve half of the god-like status its achieved.

Hmm... I could agree with that. However, I think most people would have heard DSOTM more than other albums, aside from The Wall, so therefore, it will be rated higher by those who haven't heard much else.

Listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn.... anyone else think it has a bit of a David Bowie sound to it?

dUSK 08-03-2006 05:20 AM

My oh my. I picked up the Pulse DVD today (with the money I had intended on buying a Judas Priest DVD with ), and I just got done watching it. It was simply breathtaking. Everything was superb, and the lighting and effects were fantastic. It's probably the best concert DVD I've ever seen. I only managed to find two flaws with it.

1. They didn't play Mother, which is my favourite PF song.
and 2. It makes me feel bad because I wasn't actually there, and I'll never have the chance to be. :(

Riva 08-03-2006 06:51 AM

The masses of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

Agreed about WYWH>DSotM, as much as it's hard to say. I think DSotM is so well-known was because of a combination of factors, including the time it came out and the fact that it was so popular that it self-continued its own popularity. I love that so many people loved it, but I feel like that if people had given WYWH more of a chance it could have outsold even DSotM. 3 incredibly good singles and a breathtakingly beautiful 9-part epic, it has all the elements of a classic. Not to say it didn't do well, but I think at that time the rock world was moving away from that type of rock and more towards harder rock.

jazzfromhell 08-03-2006 04:01 PM

I used to try and seem like a cool Pink Floyd guy who liked a lesser known album (Wish You Were Here) more than old overplayed, overrated, accessible Dark Side of the Moon (which at the time, every kid in the eighth grade was just discovering and wearing sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc. with the album cover) (I'm not saying this is what you guys are like (being too cool for DSotM), this is just what I was like), but when it comes down to it, I like Dark Side of the Moon more. For me, Pink Floyd doesn't get much better than the Great Gig in the Sky and Us and Them. A close match, but Dark Side of the Moon edges out Wish You Were Here, for me.

Up The Irons 08-03-2006 07:58 PM
Listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn.... anyone else think it has a bit of a David Bowie sound to it?
Yeah David Bowie has said his most prominent influence is Syd Barrett.

About WYWH/DSOTM:
Although their other albums very well deserve the godlike fame that Dark Side received being (probably) at the right place and time, I can't step away from the fact that it is just a killer album. If there were no Pink Floyd fans in the world and I sat down to listen to Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon, truth is I would probably enjoy DSOTM a little more.

BurningSky 08-03-2006 09:01 PM

I'll also join the group that enjoys DSotM over WYWH. Wish You Were Here the song might be my second favorite Pink Floy Song, but DSotM as a whole is just amazing...

Meddle will always be my favorite Pink Floyd album, though. Nothing beats Echoes, A Pillow of Winds, Fearless, or San Tropez...

BigTrav415 08-03-2006 09:56 PM
Meddle will always be my favorite Pink Floyd album, though. Nothing beats Echoes, A Pillow of Winds, Fearless, or San Tropez...
I pretty much whole-heartedly agree with you there, friend, but don't forget One Of These Days. What an incredibly kick-ass song... Seamus isn't that bad either, the dog is a tad grating, but the song is alright. I almost think it was meant as a bit of a relief before Echoes, but it is admittedly one of the only Pink Floyd songs I can say I'm not sure whether I like or not.

Riva, I'll probably post this in the Report sticky thread too, but may I suggest you edit the Rules sticky to fix the tags? I love that you guys worked to get all the Featured threads and whatnot into one big, happy list, it just needs a quick debugging, if you will

 That must've been so awesome. Must be a bit crap watching the Pulse DVD if they're around though. I'd go nuts with jealousy.

Also, have any of you guys got a recording for a show PF did on the Animals Tour at Montreal on July 6, 1977? I've got one song, Pig on the Wing Pt 2, where Waters has a sook about the crowd letting of fireworks and making too much noise, but apparently a few other interesting things happened that night as well. Such as Waters spitting at the crowd, and a Gilmour walk off because Waters was being a douche. I'd like to hear it, so if anyone has it, would they mind sending it my way?

Anyway, I listened to The Wall for the first time in ages yesterday. Good times.

dUSK 08-05-2006 12:41 AM

why do you think I haven't returned to the JP thread... :p

The Wall is awesome. A number of songs seem a little bland to me if I listened to them individually (of course there are exceptions: Mother, Comfortably Numb, One Of My Turns etc), but as a whole that album is quite an awesome listen.

I agree.

I have The Wall, Piper At The Gates... and have heard DSOTM through a few times. What should I get next? I was thinking Meddle.

dUSK 08-05-2006 12:52 AM

Definately get Wish You Were Here, it's brilliant. Although Meddle does have Echoes...

Which reminds me. Last year some time I was talking to Riva on MSN and he mentioned something about Echoes with a Philharmonic Orchestra. I would've downloaded it, but at the time I was paying 17c/Mb download. Is there any chance that one of you guys could help me obtain it?

/barges into thread asking for lots today

magicbus 08-05-2006 12:55 AM

Hey G Mac, I can send you that Montreal '77 show, do you have AIM or an email address I can get to you at? That spitting on the fan incident was actually the thing that caused Roger to write The Wall, you know, the "wall" between the fans and himself became apparent after that. It's a good show too, SOYCD 6-9 has a real good jam on it.

Apocalyptic Raids, try checking out Wish You Were Here and Meddle. Both are pretty cool (those two and DSOTM make up my top 3). WYWH is almost perfect IMO, with the epic Shine On You Crazy Diamonds, the awesome intro to Have A Cigar, and the title track is one of the Floyd's finest. And as for Meddle, "One of These Days" and "Echoes" are two of the coolest songs they've done. Check those one's out :thumb:

EDIT: beaten on both albums

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Thanks to both of you.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for confirming it. I've love to get the show off you as well. My email/MSN is gregbyers@gmail.com (My AIM doesn't seem to work for file transfers)

magicbus 08-05-2006 01:05 AM

Ok I'll upload that right now but I'll probably send it out tomorrow cause I'm heading to bed. If anybody else wants it just leave your email too.
