lol
despite the evilness of mayhem they could probably be called hipster due to their overwhelming popularity in non black metal circles
They did get me into BM:cool: |
Darkthrone got me into bm! They are like the perfect entry point.
|
Dawn and Dissection are the bands that got me into BM tbh.
I still like Dissection, don't listen to them much anymore, but Dawn is still in my top 5 for BM bands. |
burzum here
|
I couldn't stand Burzum forever, but as of like 3 years ago they've been another one of my favorite BM bands.
|
After Darkthrone I listened to Burzum and then Mayhem. It took me awhile to like Mayhem. Burzum clicked right away, though.
|
hvis lysett tar oss changed my life
|
Same story, really.
one of my favorite Burzum songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCVfvRR_Kjc |
Weird I clicked immediately with Mayhem, Burzum took some time while Darkthrone was immediately also.
Those are my top 3 bm bands btw. |
Burzum for me
lol at tera melos statement |
Hipster BM is a pretty retarded thing to say j/s
|
i had mayhem and emperor cds but it was only when i got burzum that i became very interested in black metal
|
the song det som en gang var was really the one that did it. i think i listened to that track on repeat for an entire night the first time i heard it.
and now all i listen to is hipster bm go figure |
Hipster BM is the best :)
After Burzum it was Mayhem, Darkthrone and Vlad Tepes. |
I love "hipster" BM too. A new sense of melody, and a different type of atmosphere being added in doesn't necessisarily mean a bad thing. It's also hilariously ironic, because the same people who complain about bands like Austere and Krallice for being different, complain about most other modern BM for being too derivative.
And yeah, I got into Darkthrone and Emperor pretty quickly, as well as a lot of LLN and French BM in general. Sargeist is another early BM listening band for me that I still really dig. I don't care what anyone says, they have awesome riffs and some of the best vocals in the genre.
Hipster BM is a pretty retarded thing to say j/s
That's what I was getting at. Hipsters generally listen to **** like Tera Melos and Giraffes Giraffes, or really entry level shoegaze. |
I kinda gradually got into bm. I think my first interests towards that direction were actually sparked by Agalloch. And maybe a bit of Cadacross and Immortal.
More people need to listen Sun Of the Blind, great ****
Yessssss.
Same story, really. one of my favorite Burzum songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCVfvRR_Kjc
S/t is my favorite. |
My first BM band I listened to was Beherit, actually.
|
unless my perceptions on what is "hipster" is wrong, (early) mayhem can never be considered hipster, no matter how many people like it. what makes something hipster comes from the hipster attitude and style of the band not from how many fans it has
hence iron maiden is not hipster but trivium is even though iron maiden fanbase extends further |
I don't know about Trivium being hipster.
|
Ya, Trivium is more just mall metal.
Methinks Stevie has no clue what a hipster is. Quick explanation: Hipsters are the scene kids who started wearing men's skinny jeans instead of girls jeans, and v-necks, and replaced their faux-hardcore and faux-emo listening with pop-indie and bad modern rap. They also heavily rip-off the bike punk and basement hardcore scene, and for some unknown reason, think its cool to pretend that abomination of a "beer" PBR is God's gift to man. |
ok. too much of an american term for me
|
when i say hipster bm im just referring to bm that is more popular in non bm circles than it is in bm circles. which in turn is usually the best bm.
said bm way too many times there |

said bm way too many times there
to me that says CoF, dimmu borgir, marduk...not mayhem |
to be hipster black metal the band has to actually be black metal
|
bad examples i know
|
mayhem really isnt 'hipster'. i was just noting that they have an incredibly large following of fans that arent bm fans.
|
listening to return of the vampire lord. forgot how ****ing awesome this song was.
|
mayhem hipster?
