It's a word that should die out of popular usage, but I know it might be hard for you to believe that the skin color of the user is part of the context that the word is used in so yes, it is different.

Actually, indentured servants and black slaves participated in slave revolts with each other and recognized their common class interest before indentured servitude was outlawed and whites were given special treatment and land to divide the races. The Southern economy wouldn't have flourished without slave labor. So, kind of.

Wiki tells me that Albany is 28% black and Pittsburgh is 27% black. So yeah, pretty close. It doesn't say anything about how much better Pittsburgh is though.

I need to get out more. I think my roommate, who is from Rochester, is going home this weekend, I might try to tag along. Manorialism is what I was referring to, and the color of the slaves makes no difference seeing as serfs suffered the same treatment, if not worse, as black slaves in early America.

And then changes in commerce and the rise of a merchant middle class completely changed the class structure. This still doesn't change that even if my parents were slaves, I'm white and whites won't discriminate against me based on my skin color, and would have to rely on less noticeable factors like class to pass judgment, while people of color will have a much harder time assimilating into or working around white society.
