I laugh at your 69/42. Try 87/64 then get back to me.

That's not humanly possible.

Drunken Viking 09-21-2006 12:42 AM

Maybe not for a n00b.
You guys play too much. Nowadays I play like 15-20 minutes total each few days.

Meh, I just could care less about technicality anymore.
You must be reading my mind, or something. This is pretty much exactly how I feel.

Although I did record the guitar for Judas Priest's The Hellion for an assignment today.
I've had to many years playing without proper teaching, now I have a college professor teaching me all this good technique and it's going to take a whole lot of practice to change my bad habits :(
its the same with me... one year acoustic which i played once, twice a week for not more than one hour. after one year i got me electric guitar and played a little more... nearly each day, but afte a 3/4 year i made a long break for a half year. last year i started again and since 2006 i got a teacher who told me the exact thing... i always played wrong.
so since 2006 i took guitar playing seriously and made about 60-80% of my advantages in the last 9months.

in the last august week i played 4-6hours daily, now i play 2-4hours daily... still not enough... i wish i could play 4-6hours daily again. tbh its possible but my wrist just don't want :p
i think, i shouldn't play more than 1hour today and i hope the pain will be away tomorrow... thought it will be today, but i still feel some pain... its only a little bit, but it can get worse if i play too much today.

repcak 09-21-2006 09:27 AM

right hand? you mean left hand... do you?

i got wrist problems when i 1) play too long 2) do big stretches 3) play too fast, difficult songs with stretches...

i'm only concerned cause in the last time this happend to me too often and a friend just told me that it could become a chronical disease, so maybe i should go to a doctor.

right now, so since tomorrow, my wrist hurts, but only a little bit... i stopped right in time; earlier my wrist hurts much more.

x00046455 09-21-2006 09:31 AM

It is probably your technique. you could try doin simple struming exercises like just muting the neck and struming a slow 4/4 strum with your right hand. after
a while when your wrist is looser speed up a small bit. when it gets more comfortable try adding in some simple chords on the left hand. once your wrists are loosened up you could try some down pickin at different speeds. down pickin is great for warming up your hands. i think anyway. if the pain gets really bad ypu might wanna think about seein a doctor.

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 10:12 AM

Rep, when you say stretches, by how many frets do you mean?

repcak 09-21-2006 10:13 AM

its my wrist of my left hand... not the picking hand!

and i get problems when doing legato too long... but, yeah...maybe i should try to stay more relaxed. i'm not really relaxed when i try to play difficult stuff.
Rep, when you say stretches, by how many frets do you mean?
tbh, they aren't that big. f.e.: wolf and raven - normal stretch yes, but when i do 9-7-5 i don't have problems with the stretch between my index and middle finger, but when i do it on the high e-string it hurts more... maybe cause the angle of the wrist is different while playing on the higher string, than on the lower strings...

unknownsoldier12 09-21-2006 10:16 AM

thats really the thing you need to work on...

i guarentee its some sort of mental block of restraint. It is probably stemming from you knowing its "hard", or something you not too good at, and over exerting yourself, as if to play "catch up" or progress faster

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 10:36 AM

If you play the same frets on the higher strings, then just change your wrist angle...

repcak 09-21-2006 11:28 AM

i just took up the guitar and looked exactly at my movements and the only sinews that hurts in my wrist (its not the whole sinew) is when i do a stretch with my index and middle finger, especially when doing wolf and raven.
its not the angle that causes the problem (this time!) its the stretch.

hm... tbh i started to "use" this stretch some months ago, but i never had really problems with it, but on the other side i never tried to "play" such a stretch and in wolf and raven you play it fast and often.
the best thing is to stop playing the stretch for the next few days and afterwards doing slow stretching exercises for my i and m.
if i will do those stretching exercises, its better to do the movement really slooooooow or doesn't it matter? with slow i mean really, really slow.

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 11:33 AM

Just do trills or something.

595959595959595

575757575757575

797979797979797

or something.

repcak 09-21-2006 11:44 AM

trills? won't it make it worse or painful?

can't believe its the best thing to improve the stretching of your fingers...

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 12:17 PM

Why would trills be painful? Unless you do them wrong or with bad technique.

It's not to increase stretch, it's to increase endurance.

unknownsoldier12 09-21-2006 12:19 PM

having a baritone really helped me with my stretches

ghettoeddo 09-21-2006 12:43 PM

some songs i'm trying to learn have stretches like 14-9 and i've got pretty short fingers... :( and 15-16-17-19-17 sweep i can't get that high 17 in

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 12:59 PM

You can't stretch 9-14? Wow, I find that easy. I guess stretching has never been a problem for me.

repcak 09-21-2006 01:44 PM

tomorrow i will go to a doctor and from a mate i just got a salve and won't play guitar for today and maybe even tomorrow... wow... 3days break :upset:

unknownsoldier12 09-21-2006 01:45 PM

short fingers have nothing to do with it Slippy.

My 5' even girlfriend has longer fingers than me.

I will say, having a 27" baritone for some time definitely increased my stretch by a few inches. Check out Petruccis "spider" exericises. I'm sure you'll find them beneficial

repcak 09-21-2006 01:49 PM

what is a baritone exactly?

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 02:10 PM

It has a longer scale length so it sounds thicker or something like that. One of Paul Gilbert's guitars has an extra 2 frets too and is tuned down to D.

I'm not sure of the exact definition.

ghettoeddo 09-21-2006 02:10 PM

a bigass guitar :]

unknownsoldier12 09-21-2006 02:59 PM

a baritone is a guitar that is suited for lower tunings because of the larger scale....

but yea, its a big arse guitar

repcak 09-21-2006 03:02 PM

do you have pics or links to some of those guitars?

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 06:39 PM

Google it or something.

Have you ever done trills? It can start to burn on the left side of my left hand when I do trills with the ring finger and the pinky.

MRDuCran 09-21-2006 07:59 PM

Yeah, a burn but it's not actual pain like if you put your arm against an iron.
