Justin Chancellor, bassist.
Ah...I tried to get my bro into Tool, and he (my bro) is a terrific bassist and he wasn't very impressed by his stuff...and looking over some of the tabs I can't say it looks difficult at all...

Bartender 02-11-2005 09:17 PM
Yeah, well that is really the biggest problem I have with Tool fans, is they rave about a musicianship I don't see. If they said they enjoyed listening to it, great, happy for em, but when they say Maynard writes the best lyrics and is a god at vocals...meh.

To a degree I guess, I still don't even see Lateralus as that good as a whole though, too much filler type stuff imo.
Well I really do love his vocals, and I really like his lyrics. I wouldn't say they're the best, but then I wouldn't say that any particular vocalist or lyricist is the best.

Ok. I wasn't really sure.
So is Tool metal?
Depends on which album, and on your view of metal.

Kingofdudes 02-11-2005 09:19 PM

I am a fan of Adam Jones :-/

and his tone :-/

I'd agree with you, I think his vocals and lyrics are very good, but then there are people like Mikael Akerfeldt and whoever writes Rush's lyrics, and Anders Friden's lyrics always tickled my fancy.

jpj 02-11-2005 09:19 PM

From what I've heard of Tool I'd call them metal.

I thought so, thank you. Neil Pert writes awesome lyrics.
Deos the riff have to be extremely difficult to be good...
No, some prime examples: White Zombie - 1965, Tool - Mantra, Korn - Did My Time, Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (no riff is as catchy), In Flames - My Sweet Shadow

Woodstock 02-11-2005 09:24 PM

Anyone know the date of Elvis and Ray Charles' deaths?

That is subjective to the person's taste.
And I think since everyone over-hypes Tool people expect their music to be rather more difficult than what it is.

Bull, another one bites the dust is simpler and catchier. :p

No, but from what I saw, it follows guitar too much...almost all the time in fact. More talented bassists usually have lines, rather than root note riffs.

People always assume that...Sure the guitar isnt following the bass? :p

Elvis died August 16, 1977. Ray Charles is dead, Livewired.

Nope. Don't know the date offhand though.

On the subject of over rated bands that some of us like and some of us hate, on the bus I was listening to Soundtrack To Your Escape, and I noticed an impressive 14 second scream at the end of Touch Of Red, nothing compared to the 45(I think) second scream in Open Face Surgery, but it's pretty impressive.

jpj 02-11-2005 09:30 PM

Ray died June 10, 2004.

Since the guitar establishes tonality, the bass follows it unless it is establishing tonality through lines so in this case, yes.

sounds like Linkin Park's new bassist

Scott > Dave

So if the guitar followed the same notes as les claypool of primus you would say that the bass follows the guitar.

The Open Face Surgery one is just short of 30 seconds, I think. Apparently the new album will feature one something like twice that length, though. And Flo has started a new technique (called "double blast beats" for the moment) which has increased his already impressive speed.

*can't wait*

You're only 14? You seem much more mature than any other 14 year old I've ever met (internet or otherwise)

Dieforitall89 02-11-2005 09:35 PM

Anyway, im done with the whole bass argument thing cause i could do it for 4 hours.
