Haha, I was wondering the exact same thing the first time I heard that song.
yes, it's no fault on your cd or anything, it is supposed to be that way.

the lyrics are about live, and how fast live passes and how fast it can be over, that's why there's that sudden and abrubt ending ;)

np: dream theater- the great debate

EDIT: ow some one else already answered the question :p

TBH, Labrie, IMO is a brilliant vocallist, who's emotional voice is something that makes Dream Theater the great band they are...

Moses 07-27-2005 01:11 PM

I just got Awake. I previously had their heavier stuff but this one really delivers for what it is, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream in particular.

In the booklet though Labrie looks like Fabio and Portnoy looks like Ben Stiller when he was in Starsky and Hutch pretending to be the biker.

Intro for 6:00 > most.

crazydrummer 07-27-2005 01:32 PM

Awake is incredibly underrated. One of the best DT albums.

Nonono (about the 6:00 thing). In my opinion that's the weakest track on the album, well apart from Innocence Faded.

Personally Awake's one of my favourite Dream Theater albums. It's dark and heavy and Scarred is my all time fav song by the band. I just love it.

Awake and ToT are my favorite albums. I have been listening to Awake more than ToT lately.

/makes observation

So if I'm looking for something in the vein of ToT I should buy Awake?

Tarantino 07-27-2005 01:53 PM

ToT rocks out loud, but I love scenes from a memory and metropolis 1 just about as much

Awake is their most agressive album, music wise.
vocal wise, awake is the most agressive, and it had great songs, so I sugegest you buy it.

I'm the same, when I first got Awake, I really didn't think much of it, but I went through a huge Awake time, and just loved the whole CD, I even chuckle at the annoying "6:00 on a Christmas morning" or whatever sample...

Yeah, that was the first song I listened to when I got the cd, and I was with my parents in the car. I actually turned the song during that part. I was liek oooh i hope the rest of the cd isn't like this

Mambuto_O'Mally 07-27-2005 09:44 PM

^^^
What do you mean, "oooh i hope the rest of the cd isn't like this?"

thunderzstruck 07-27-2005 09:47 PM

Well the '6:00 on a christmas morning" thing is REALLY cheesy. I also was hoping the vocals on the album were'nt like that the whole time

btw I love awake now

Mambuto_O'Mally 07-27-2005 09:56 PM

Oh. Yeah I heard that and skipped to Caught In A Web.

YouGottaBeCrazy 07-27-2005 10:03 PM

heh, the intro to 6:00 never really bothered me that much. I remember the first DT album I got was Images and Words and I didn't really like it that much at first because I was just kind of confused with all the musicianship, over the next month, I pretty much listened to it everytime I played Halo 2 and I really grew to love that cd. Than, I bought myself Awake a few months later, having no expectations of it, and I really did not like this cd much at all at first. I mean, I listened to it, and I just thought it was really bland. But, as with many albums, the more I listened to it, the more I liked it. I started to hear all the great musical elements of the album and I really appreciate it now. I definitely think that it is DT's hardest album to really 'get', if you know what I mean. Very cool though. On a sort of different subject. Does anyone consider "A Mind Beside Itself" one song in 3 parts or are the 3 songs supposed to stand alone? Because they are definitely connected lyrically (obviously not Erotomania) and musically. Just wondering.

Mambuto_O'Mally 07-27-2005 10:37 PM

Well IMO all of the songs are connected, but if you look in the booklet you can see that Erotomania and Voices are grouped together. Anyway if 'Awake' is the hardest to get into I'm set. I loved that album after just one listen, but I haven't listened to any music latley due to my **** ear ache. After work tommorow I'm going to listen to it again. :thumb:

I was just listening to 'The Killing Hand' off When Dream and Day Unite, can anyone clarify if there is a bass solo at the end of the song. The part i'm talking about is from about 7.45 onwards.

What is your order of preference for the Dream Theater albums?

Mines:

Scenes From A Memory
Images and Words
Train of Thought
Awake
Octavarium
When Dream and Day Unite
6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I don't have Falling into Infinity or A Change of Seasons, have to buy them sometime.

And one last thing, what is the 'Live at the Marquee' CD like. I've only seen it once and was wondering if it was worth trying to find.

shamed-angel 07-29-2005 06:37 AM

Yeh the bass takes the lead role. Like On YTSE Jam, but I don't know how many of you have noticed that.
I have all their albums and My favourtie is either Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory or A Change of Seasons. Live at the Marquee is okay, I enjoy listening to it to hear James singing some of the Charlie-era songs. But it isn't anything amazing IMO.

thunderzstruck 07-29-2005 10:01 AM

From what I have my order is:

Scenes From a Memory
Awake
Images and Words
Octavarium

jpshortstuff 07-29-2005 10:16 AM

:
1)Tot/SDOIT/SFAM
2)8Vium
3)IAW
4)A

dont bother with Live at the marquee, unless you're a big WDADU fan. 'Once in a livetime' or 'Live at Budokan' is much better.

Ad Absurdum 07-29-2005 11:29 AM

Awake
Train Of Thought
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Images And Words
Octavarium
Scenes From A Memory
A Change Of Seasons*
When Dream And Day Unite
Falling Into Infinity

*I didn't know if I was meant to include that or not.

When I first got Awake I listened to it I put it on, listened through the whole thing and said "wow, what a horrible album" and put it back in the case. Three months later I pulled it out again, listened to it and thought "this isn't so bad". I listened to it more and more and now it's one of my favourite albums.

Moses 07-29-2005 12:07 PM

Labrie looks like Fabio in the booklet for Awake.

National chaos sam 07-29-2005 01:09 PM

Awake is great in my eyes. its lacking in some areas.
6:00 is annoying.
but lie, and the mirror are soooo cool.
its a great album in my eyes, i never really had a problem with it. i like awake better than WDADU.

Evandil 07-29-2005 03:33 PM

my favourite songs are octavarium, lie, another day, finally free and metropolis
the album awake is pretty cool, but i prefer other albums

I have Live Scenes From New York and Live at Budokan. Im steering away from Once in a Livetime because to be honest I haven't really heard anything good about it. Does James do a good job of the songs off When Dream and Day Unite? If they are anything like 'Only A Matter Of Time' off Live at Budokan I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

 He does , actually. I looked. Wow.

justinw 07-31-2005 02:39 AM

Where they have so many instrumenal songs, and songs with long parts without vocals, when they play live, what does the singer do all this time? Does he just stand there?

heavy metal kid 07-31-2005 02:45 AM

nope, he just go to backstage and let the band do their job.
