The real thing that made me hate this band back in the day were the lyrics to "Gutted". If you don't remember them then here you go.

A table of the deranged, this savage brutal being
A shocking way of life living on human offspring
Murder of the innocent, his pale grey face expresionless
Horrid dismemberment
One persons tortures, is anothers pleasure
Malformation, a diseased brain
Unsuspecting slowly dying, as his knife invades
The child, screams of pain, no one hears
Blood splotches now appear, esctasy through
Each cut, now the body twiches the gutted
Little torso ready to be cooked
Isolated in his own mind the need to kill
Now possesses his body
Self mutilated
Between killings ejaculation, cut off appendages
Of former victims, sexual violence satisfaction
Disembodied corpses, spewing gore
On his body, soaked with their fluids, various
Digestive parts, and assorted meats
Plunging his fist down the throat, ripping out

The guts, internal extraction
The entire body bleeding
The heart stops pumping

The child lying dead, just another gutted infant
To satisfy his hunger, temptations of the flesh
Voracious appetite
Killing to release pure souls to the heavens
Justification of his killing self-torture
Stiffening pain
He sees the faces of the dead
Guts are strewn from the children
Splintered bones, poke through skin
Gratification through castration
Roasting parts for consumption

...gross.
/Why I don't listen to Cannibal Corpse. I don't think the lyrics are gross, just cheesy.

Thor 04-03-2006 06:27 PM

They're both, at least for the most part. Some of their songs are clever and well written, I'll give them that. But then they'll come back and write stuff like this which immediately turns me off.

Lord Abortion 04-03-2006 06:32 PM

While he was in the band, Chris Barnes controlled most of the lyrical themes.

And I'll point out that Butchered at birth was their second album.

While alot of these are great(stripped, raped and strangled is my favourite CC song, both musically and lyrically) Some aren't as good or diverse as when Alex and the rest of the band shared out the lyric writing duties.
You can see this though the lesser amount of rape, murder and necrophilia in later albums.
Then again, I'm pretty into brutal death, so gory lyrical themes don't bother me.

Thor 04-03-2006 06:35 PM

I can tolerate brutal death metal to a certain extent, but lyrics about raping women with knives and butchering babies just make me turn the song off.

However, technical death metal rocks incredibly hard. As you can see by my current avatar, I'm a big fan of the band Death. Chuck Schuldiner is one of the best riff writers I've heard in the genre, if not the best.

Well, yeah. they don't tend to write about that sort of thing any more.
It's like a horror movie, you know?

The interviews on http://www.cannibalcorpse.net with George and Alex recently might explain it better than me, with regards to lyrics.

Stormrider 04-03-2006 06:40 PM

My brother has 2 CC shirts. A Butchered at Birth and a Tomb of the Mutilated one.

There's a ton of reviews on there, which one is it? I'd rather not sort through all of them and just have you tell me where it is. :thumb:

Technical Death FTW - Cryptopsy, Necrophagist, Death. They all own arse.

Not my kind of horror movie, unfortunately - I prefer the more suspenseful, intelligent, and sheerly creepy horror movies, rather than gore-soaked bullcrap like Saw. IMO x100.

I liked Saw. Its not just gore crap...

Thor 04-03-2006 06:55 PM

Well it's not all just gore, but for the most part is.

I'm a huge fan of zombie movies myself. George A. Romero is a genius.

Lord Abortion 04-03-2006 06:57 PM

Well, I'm having one more song then bed.

Quick, unrelated question if you will, gents...

How would you classify Amorphis?

Thanks.
