I tried to make it down to the front by myself but there were way too many guards on the floor.

I think I can do it at the Hollywood Bowl. I've been there many times and I have a way of worming my way around. :shifty:
I just finsihed watching the gig from Pete's site. I gotta recommend it. Its an outdoor gig. Cold night, great crowd. They are playing at the end of a street. Colorfully lit apartments on either side, people watching from their balconies. I enjoyed it a lot. Its mellow in the middle, but in a good way. And they do a great Naked Eye. And I love Mike Post Theme. Great song... |
John, were you at this show?
http://www.longliverock.org/downloads/torrents-details.php?id=280 |
no. i went to a 2004 make up gig. after the show you linked and i think a couple of others (if any) they took some time off. i saw them in Irvine when they returned and then in 2004 at the Bowl. i think that was a small tour to do some things they had to cancel in 2002. obligations and what not...

For those who don't visit the review site, here is a news item I wrote and posted this morning:
Townshend Walks Out On Stern Before it even started it was over. Promoting their new internet radio endeavor with a free two day preview, SIRIUS Satellite Radio this morning brought two of their major players together in Pete Townshend and Howard Stern, both of whom have exclusive stations on the channel, Stern with his daily morning show and special programming and Townshend with The Who Channel . Arriving with surprise guest Roger Daltrey and girlfriend Rachel Fuller in tow Townshend walked out of the studio while still in the green room when Stern side kick Robin Quivers mentioned Townshend's 2002 arrest on child pornogaphy charges and went on to say he had "downloaded loads of it"and "gotten away with it", when in actuality Townshend was cleared on all charges excepting the "viewing of illegal child pornography" charge, which got him five years probation as a registered sex offender. Fourteen of Mr. Townsehnd's computers were confiscated for the invistagation. No evidence of child pornography was found. Townshend accessed a child porn site in 1999 with his credit card while doing research for a paper he was writing on the easy availability of pornography and child pornography on the internet and its potentially damaging effects on society and the individual. Howard Stern called the incident this morning "unfortunate" and personally apologized to Townshend on behalf of his crew. Robin Quivers also apologized saying she did not know the subject was "off limits" and was only going "by her notes." Roger Daltrey stuck around for the next hour and said Pete was completely justified in walking out and the subject could not be discussed regardless, as Townshend's probatation is still in effect. At the end of the interview Howard called himself and his staff "a bunch of stupid F*** ups", while Pete posted a blog at his website with the simple message of "Howard: Let's have lunch." :( |
Here are the reasons why I was let down by the new album not including Mike Post Theme, God Spoke of Marty Robbins (In the Attic version), 2000 Years (In the Attic version).
http://youtube.com/watch?v=37J91o-GyvM http://youtube.com/watch?v=YSAnHDLvkes http://youtube.com/watch?v=N03mUxdzOAs http://youtube.com/watch?v=5aadBKgetqA http://youtube.com/watch?v=U4xl2RtNqOQ Pete wasn't unfortunately able to reach this kind of excellence in songwriting with this particular record. Hopefully he will give it another shot with better result. And shoud start with getting a "outside" producer :) |
Stern's job is to make people feel like ****. I've always thought he was kind of an immature douche. Good on Pete for walking out on him.
|
I hate Howard Stern. How that man has gotten where he is, is beyond me.

Alright. Watching that July 1st, 2002 Hollywood Bowl show right now. It's a mix of both pro-shot footage, and some guy who can't hold a video camera. Looks like a solid show though.
|
Okay, this is something that has always bothered me. Whenever they did one of John's songs live, it seems like Roger is always singing along with him. Not even singing a harmony, but singing the same notes. Gettings two singers to sing the same melody is way damn hard (harmonies are much easier, and sound much better) and occasionally they're out of tune with each other ever so slightly.
Despite that fact, though, whose decision was it so that Roger always sang? You can throw the argument that Roger didn't play an instrument so he might get bored when its not his song, but he never sings to Pete's songs. |

Yeah that had to be a tough one. The Ox wasn't even in his grave yet, I don't think. They had to play the gig. They were ready. They just grabbed Pino and hoped for the best. Let us know how it turned out.
Okay, this is something that has always bothered me. He pretty much handles them alone. Toward the end his voice was shot so roger pretty much picked things up for him, but other then that on tracks like My Wife, The Quiet One, Dangerous, Twist And Shout, I hear a lot of John. Oh, and if any of you wondered why Roger seems mellower onstage these days, seems lost, and has trouble swinging that mic (its funny when he does the "baby twirl"these days) yesterday he said he had shoulder surgery recently and its just not happening. And the "allergic to pot" thing he says he's always enjoyed weed when he has smoked it but is allergic now. Last he smoked was three years ago and said it put him "flat on his back". Back in the day he said you would smoke a joint and "start to get high". He says the new one hit stuff is "dangerous". Gramps... |

It was 4 days after he died. There is a memorial for him during the show, but I haven't gotten there yet. At the very beginning of the show, Pete and Roger gave eachother big hugs which was nice to see.
Also: I can't wait for Endless Wire. I have to cut down on my CD purchases though, and get a job. =( Pete seems to be in high spirits for this show though, and even did a little comedy bit, and asked if he was in a testicle factory (refering to the balls on the roof of the bowl), and why people were smoking camomile, and why he had not had these reactions to camomile tea before. :p |
a job
life will never be the same, jeff. try to not get banned your first day, k. :p yeah when i went they had a video tribute during the encore. it was good. fairly minor though, tbh. i've been watching the Swiss show from the Townshend site when i get a chance. i need a DVD burner. gonna pick one up soon. and my Live In Boston DVD has come up missing. i have the case but can't find the disc, wtf? i can't imagine where it must of went :( i had something more to say, but now i've forgotten... |
:( I know how you feel.
Hope you find your disc. Also, make sure you see my edit to that post. |
As I type this, I'm downloading 4 more shows to go with my other 2 :):(
It's raping my bandwidth. |
saw it. yeah, it must of been bittersweet...pete is a funny guy....
you know its funny how pepple expect bandmates to be really close. i mean obviously John was loved, but they knew each other for forty years, spent years on the road, thousands of hours making music and half a lifetime and then some working together. no one was going to fall apart about his death. these are grown men with lives and families of their own. and i think Pete and Rog saw it coming. at 55 or whaterver and with an already shaky heart you just can't be stuffing coke up your nose and sleeping with hookers ( I read he had two that night) like you used to :( great talent lost before his time...meh, i hope he enjoyed himself... EDIT: you gotta send me some DVD's :) :( :p |
Indeed. He didn't want to lose his previous lifestyle is all I guess. :(

Same with Twist and Shout from Isle of Wight (but not later versions), and during Trick of the Light on the '89 tour. Never during Boris though, or during the two Tommy songs. But it seems to be a good chunk. And there was never any double leads during Pete's parts. But your right about later on, with his voice getting shot. Its just even before then it was happening. |
Well, listen to Heaven and Hell, the second half of each verse is dual Roger and John.
I always thought so! At first I disregarded it for a little glich in my cd player, but then I realized that there had to be two people singing. The best part on Heaven and Hell is when Roger does his quasi-vocal solo (Heaven, Heaven...Heaven and Hell) towards the beginning of the breakdown, and the rest of the band is going crazy beneath him. |
Here is the entire Howard Stern/Pete Townshend fiasco I posted news of on the previous page. They mention the crap two minutes in, go to some other stuff, mention more Pete crap, and then Roger comes on and the thing gets going. The entire thing is one hour eleven minutes and well worth your time to listen as you sit at your computer. Or whatever.. And if nothing else Roger is very entertaining.

Ugh. That's just disgusting. That girl who brought it up is just really stupid. It shows throughout the entire thing.
Even when Roger is trying to talk to them, they are still cracking jokes to eachother back and forth about Pete. It's just disgusting. I love how Roger says "Yes, I'm here." The tone is excellent. |
The Who board is proving to be pretty entertaining over at the fan site. Its pretty straight over there. They don't lol or anything. Some great fans over there. And if anything Who related happens that board knows first. Really. Lots of info. I'm bringing some MX style shi.t to them. Today I pwnd some a-hole. He wrote an "Open Letter" to Pete Townshend. Read what he wrote. Dummy:
Zoom if you can't see it. The page is restricted to link. Or something... http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/2554/untitled0991tp2.jpg  They really don't do that stuff over there. Funny. No one says anything though, so thats cool... |
