Darkness 07-23-2005 03:50 PM

I bought 6 Degrees a little while ago, and I love the first cd a lot. Every song on their is classic IMO. But man was I disappointed by the title track. I guess the music was ok(the thing I don't like is how it sounds so positive all the time when the other cd had more of a negative feel..), but man the lyrics were so bad and ruined it for me... I guess I was expecting something more like A Change In Seasons... oh well, the first cd is still great.

yeah i was dissapointed with the song '6 degrees...'... especially in 'About to crash': ('I'm alive again, the darkness far behind me, i'm invincible, despair will never find me'). the way Labrie sings it makes you want to go 'STFU!!'

i liked the overture of the song though.

Darkness 07-23-2005 03:57 PM

Yeah the first part was pretty cool... but once the vocals come in, it just gets bad.

jpshortstuff 07-24-2005 10:42 AM

The best part of six degrees (song) is probably the Goodnight kiss solo.
The best part of the album is The Glass Prison

Firecracker 07-25-2005 10:57 AM

I was just listening to their version of "Oh Holy Night"
And i think i have never heard something more beautiful and spiritually awakening.

Has the Gigantour started yet? if so, was Dream Theater any good

the2stranger 07-25-2005 11:42 AM

yes, it has started, a few pages back there is a review someone did one gigantour, it sounded great to me :)

but I'll be seeing DT in the fall probably, and I;ve seen them a month ago, so :D

Blue Collar Man 07-25-2005 12:16 PM

I saw them last night and I was a little bit disapointed. Petrucci was turned up so loud that the speakers were overdriven. It hurt my ears on some notes and it drowned out the music. But if it was equalized better it would have been a flawless show. Hopefully they'll get it worked out for the other shows.

Bazarov 07-25-2005 02:45 PM

Seeing them in 3 more days. I only have the Scenes from a Memory CD. I need to go out and buy some more. They're a great band.

frkn'loud 07-25-2005 05:26 PM

I need help, my friend gave me a Dream Theatre song but it was named wrong. It says it's from Octavairum. Anyway, the first line is:

"Ohhh, Take me to the oceans white sands, Ohhh where i can catch(?) myself"

I really need to know what it's called.
Thanks

One Groovin Clown 07-25-2005 06:10 PM

I just revently bought mt first Dream Theater Cd. I bought Octavarium. I had heard good things about this band, (Tool forum). So i thought that i'd give them a try. I enjoy them, they're faster stuff i prefer, but they're slow songs are less apealing to me, even though i'm much mroe for slower songs. Overall i give them 2 thumbs up :thumb: :thumb: and i'll be looking into getting more of their Cd's.
I've had a weird Dream Theater occurance, and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my dilemma. Here goes....

When an album comes out, most of the time I download a few songs and decide whether I like it or not. If I like what I hear, I'll go buy the album. So the day Octavarium came out, I downloaded all 8 songs from the album. I really liked it so just recently I went out and bought the album. Here's the dilemma.... The songs that I downloaded and the songs on the album are in no way the same. Completely different!

The songs that I downloaded are all labeled the same as the album tracks. I also know that these mystery songs that I downloaded are studio recorded and very recent. The songs are very heavy like Train of Thought, and La Brie's voice sounds very recent. I know they're new songs because I have all of DT's previous albums. If you want to hear them they are on the Limewire P2P program, just search for Dream Theater or Octavarium, and they are labeled as the songs from Octavarium.

Can someone please tell me what I'm listening to!

Thanks.
I know what you're talking about, I got the same songs you have off Limewire a while back and recently discovered that they arent in fact from Octavarium or any other DT album. I am in the process of transcribing the lyrics to them and I was going to make a post about my find. I will still post the transcribed lyrics if anyone wants to check them out. You are right about them sounding more like Train of Thought and I wonder if they were supposed to be on it but got cut from the list. I dont think they are from any kind of new unreleased album they recorded for obvious reasons (the release of the actual Octavarium only a few months ago and they are currently on tour supporting it). Ironically I think these mystery songs are better than what I have heard from the actual album and I was really stoked about getting this awesome new DT release, that is, until I found out what Octavarium actually sounds like.

mprules 07-26-2005 12:03 AM

its just james labries latest solo album, its old news

and its a crappy album, far too numetalish for my liking, but im kinda dissapointed with a few songs from octavarium, but the root of all evil, these walls, panic attack and octavarium are all really good, so they do the album justice

shamed-angel 07-26-2005 03:50 AM

Can anyone tell me what they think of my review of ToT?
Dream Theater- Train of Thought.
-------
Dream Theater, whilst remaining first and foremost a very progressive band, released this album in October 2003. It is their heaviest work to date and is very guitar orientated. But Jordan Rudess's keyboard work on the album is awesome. While this is true, the real god on this album is John Petrucci. His guitar skills are reallty shown off on this album, every song has a blazing solo, which will disloacate even the most virtuositic of jaws. As I Am, the opener, is a brilliant opener to a brilliant album, with it's catchy chorus and rapped bridge, before Petrucci rips into a mind boggling solo. Before This Dying Soul's Machine Head style double bass intro, before the instrument section, which like every other on this album, will astonish you. Vacant is an affecting ballad in the style of such earlier Dream Theater songs as Wait for Sleep or Disappear. A quick warning to all guitarists. One listen to this album will make you realise what a clueless, fat-fingered dunce you really are. Sorry!
Cheers! :thumb:

Jordan Rudess - Secrets Of The Muse

Anyone have it? If you do, do you love it as much as me?
It's too good to be true.

shamed-angel 07-26-2005 07:20 AM

The Rudess Morganstein Project albums are awesome. I havent heard that but have all his albums with Dixie and they're awesome.

I totally disagree. I never expected anything of this quality to come from James Labrie. I think it is much better than Octavarium (oh how I hate to say it) and I may even buy it.

shamed-angel 07-27-2005 04:18 AM

I've always thought of him as DT's weakest link, musicianship wise. But this album holds itself really well. I bought it and I think it's really fucking good.

are you talking about LaBrie?
I always have trouble to decide who's the weakest link in the band.
it might be LaBrie, but take in consideration:
LaBrie is the voice of Dream Theater, how annoying some people may think he is, he has been the voice for ten+ years.
( I know charli did vocals on the first album though)
2nd: LaBrie has some great talent, he has a great voice, and fits in with the band, such a progressive band needs a vocalsist who can be progressive in his vocalstyle and rgnge too, that LaBrie (although there are quite a few good prog vocalits)

the only thing that bothers me about LaBrie is
his breath control, sometimes his, how do I say that.....well the breath he takes just before he starts singing a line annoys me.
but than again, it is his trademark.
2nd: he submitts so little yo the band, he hardly writes any lyrics, and songwriting isn't his thing either.

but I love him just the same.

Lord Abortion 07-27-2005 07:12 AM

I apologise if this was late but DT are playing wolverhampton as their extra UK tour date- not manchester- looks like it'll have to be the next tour I see them on... :(

Don't get me wrong, I think he's an amazing singer and perfect for the band. But I just think that he gives the least to DT, in terms of songs and in terms of talent. Most of his vocal melodies are written for him. I love his vocal control in Part III of Change of Seasons "Carpe Diem" You know the "We can learn from the past. But those days are gone." That always gioves me chills. He has definately given alot to the band but I just think he's the weakest link in the band.

the2stranger 07-27-2005 10:26 AM

^
I think I agree with you, if only he wrote the lyrics, and made his own vocal lines.
I do think his voice on octovarium is the best since I&W :)

hallowed_ironmaiden 07-27-2005 10:27 AM

I agree

Haha, I was wondering the exact same thing the first time I heard that song.
