What song should I play at my grandfather's funeral? He died today, of all days, but actually it makes perfect sense to me. He was a fervently religious man; he's sort of the reason I believe, and the fact that he died on the day before Chanukah (equivalent to Christmas Eve), which this year just so happens to be Christmas, just seems right. It was time.

Anyway, I'm playing at the funeral. What should I play?

Zappa 12-25-2005 04:07 PM

This game:

Boss DD-6 Digital Delay Pedal
South-African Thumb Piano
Pete & Pete Season 2 on DVD
South Park Season 6 on DVD
The Dub Room Special (Zappa TV Special) on DVD
The Day the Earth Stood Still on DVD
North by Northwest on DVD
George Carlin's When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?
Lots of $$$ from relatives
Candy

Erm, obvious suggestion by me, but Iron & Wine is probably suitable. Each Coming Night, Faded From The Winter, or Sodom, South Georgia...

Those are probably terrible suggestions. Sorry if I offended you.

No, it's highly likely that it will be an Iron & Wine song. I have to consider the lyrics carefully. "Faded From The Winter" is probably a good choice, but I might be able to do better.

BillCosby 12-25-2005 04:45 PM

I don't know if it's fitting, because it's first person perspective , but the Johnny Cash version of "We'll Meet Again" is what I want played at my funeral.

EDIT: I wasn't just saying that, I mean that's my suggestion for you, Jon.

Wanker 12-25-2005 04:46 PM

I looked through most of Sam Beam's lyric library and either "Faded From The Winter" or "On Your Wings" are probably lyrically the best. I may have missed one though.

JonM 12-25-2005 04:51 PM

"Faded From The Winter" does seem to be the most fitting. It's eerie how many of the lines from "Sodom, South Georgia" apply, but others are totally not what I'm going for. "On Your Wings" might work, but I'd have to retool it musically, because I don't think it's quite the feel I'm going for as it is on the record.

Thanks, BC. I'll look into that one as well.

I got my brother their self-titled album for Christmas, and he graciously played it on the stereo so I could listen too. It's definitely better than Doppleganger, much more interesting.

I got the fifth season of The Simpsons on DVD, a book of The Onion stories, and an iPod nano (seems to work fine, I'll get the hang of it eventually). Some other stuff too, but who cares?
I got one of these, too, except mine's from Zimbabwe. They're really fun, I've been playing mine all day. I also got Pete & Pete Season 2

My sister's friend gave me a Crybaby and it's the coolest thing ever. I got him a RATM DVD.

EDIT: Oh and, you know, all 4 GYBE and both (real) EITS releases...on vinyl.

BillCosby 12-25-2005 09:37 PM

I'm looking to buy a 4-track cassette recorder just to mess around with some bedroom recordings and crap.

Is there any that are particularly good or bad, or are most pretty much the same?

Zappa 12-25-2005 09:46 PM

So we're twins.

I think my thumb-piano was actually made in America. But it's a beautiful sounding instrument.

Dog 12-25-2005 09:53 PM

Ooooh, luckies. I've wanted a thumb piano for a long time. I've seen them pretty cheap online so I'll probably order one some time.

I didn't ask for anything this Christmas so I just got a bunch of little things that I've needed for a while.
