No, they're not overrated. They have succeeded many things that many metal bands haven't. They have one of the largest fan bases of metal bands, they have sold huge amounts of records compared to other metal bands, some of their albums are rated at top charts at one of the best metal albums, same with some of their songs, etc...
Every band has fanboys. The reason metallica has more than most bands is because they are good. Fanboys wouldn't be as obessed with them if their music sucked. I mean if Maiden sold 20 million copies in one album, whether it is good or not, they would be called soldouts, pop, crap, etc... People just can't stand seeing a metal band succeed into music industry and have a large fan base.
Music is subjective. I'm sure Britney Spears has her legions of fans that go around thinking she's the most amazing person alive. Aswell as Good Charlotte, Blink 182 etc etc. I'm guessing you don't think that? Same goes for Metallica. How many albums have they sold? I forget the total it says at the start of SKOM. I think Coroner should have sold millions of albums, cause they're amazing, but sadly they aren't well enough known. Metallica fans can say what they want. The Black Album WAS a drastic change from ...And Justice For All, which got them more fans. Fanboys are fine, but you have to be able to deal with negative critisism without resorting to petty insults. I think Kirk Hammett sucked on Load and Re-Load, but that's my opinion. Perhaps what's why they don't let him solo anymore, I don't know. You say it like Maiden don't sell a lot of album. Most of their albums go near the top of the charts on release. They never drastically altered their style, so I doubt you'd get anyone calling them sell outs. Well, perhaps the metal purists cause Bruce cut his hair, but that's just daft. |
No, selling out means changing music style to something else for the main purpose of earning more money. There are so many other different reasons a band can change. Bands can change because they're tired of their old music and want to move on to something new. Metallica has sold about 90 million albums I believe. Iron Maiden has also sold 50 million + (That's the best I could find) which is still not as close to metallica considering maiden has made more albums than metallica. I like many other bands, but still do not claim them to be nowhere as best bands. The only bands that I think are one of the best are metallica, maiden, and black sabbath. Yes, it's my opinion just like everyone else's. Nothing special. Just trying to say that what metallica has done is not easy to accomplish and many metal bands couldn't do it even if they tried. Excluding the top 2 of course.

Thrash (Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All)
Metal (Metallica) Hard Rock (Load, Re-Load) Nu-Metal (St. Anger) The changes haven't really been favourable in my opinion, but it has gathered them a lot more fans. I don't say they sold out. If they wanna change their music it's up to them. My key point is not everyone has to like it, plus you're obviously gonna get people saying they sold out when James says things like "We'll never make a music video". Fine, he was young and stuff and I don't really care that they made countless music videos after he said it. Sadly there will be many Metallihaters aswell as many, many fanboys. Kinda balances itself out in an odd kind of way. |

Hah, that's the main reason I question their change. I'd like to see what other people think about it too. |
Yeah Dyers eve is kind of tough, but it's not that hard.
As a drummer, I can play the intro to Dyers eve on guitar, I think the ''And Justice for all'' intro was pretty tricky, not difficult, it was just a pain in the *** to get around! Mama said took be a week or so also For all Metallica fans! The link below is a lecture about selling out!! I think its worth reading, It brought tears to my eyes!!! Link 1 This is probably going to be incredibly sexist-sounding, but I still am surprised when I come across a girl, or a woman, who is into heavy metal music. And I don't just mean those girls who know of Metallica's post-1991 music, with the odd Megadeth song - I mean girls who know their metal, from No Life 'til Leather to Napalm Death, from Master of Puppets to Mayhem's Pure ****ing Armageddon. I'll admit, it's bad - when my girlfriend showed me her extensive Metallica and Megadeth collection, when she told me she was into Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, I was surprised (pleasantly, of course). Growing up in the Persian Gulf, heavy metal is still very much a sub-culture, and people were surprised that me, with my clean-cut, professional image, listened to metal from Load to Emperor. Hell, I get that in the United States, too. My fellow columnist Adam has already spoken on metal stereotypes, so let me steal that idea and run with it. Women and metal, heaven and hell? This is probably going to be incredibly sexist-sounding, but I still am surprised when I come across a girl, or a woman, who is into heavy metal music. Rock music, and in particular heavy metal, has always been thought of as a man's domain. Maybe it's all the testosterone, the aggression, that has made a female metalhead a rare commodity. It's not easy to imagine a girl mixing it up in the pit when Slayer take the stage and blast "Angel of Death". If you caught the VH1 special "When Metallica Ruled The World", you'd have noted Lars Ulrich mentioning that they started to see more girls at their concerts after the Black Album came out, than before. Maybe this makes sense, a song like "Nothing Else Matters" is a tad more accessible than, say, "No Remorse". And in the mindset of girls being into the emotional, lovey, ballady stuff, it's very easy to comprehend Metallica being a band with a rising female audience if they (the band) show a softer, gentler side. |
You just want to hate Metallica because of how they succeeded and your favorite band didn't make it!! Metallica has prepared the way for a lot of successful bands right now that if not for Metallica, they won't have inspiration and desire.
Many have tried to copy their music and figure out their fomula for success, but none has come even close. Metallica is the best band of the new era, next to ACDC, Iron Maiden and Led Zep, Wake up Metallica Haters and smell the coffee! Thius band will KICK YOUR ***!!! Let me tell you something about sell-out. In life, there is evolution - and that is a normal process. It's a universal truth that something evolves from here to there. Even you haters evolve in the course of you mealsy lives, from your wants, likes, needs, desire, etc... Metallica evolved and you can't handle it!! They create a different, more melodic music, make videos and you call them a sell out. Learn to adapt to the current issue and sorroundings so you will be able to survive. Making a video is not being a sell-out. So what if James contradicted himself. But that's the nature of the beast and business. What is important is they still make good music and still KICKS YOUR ***!!!!! Metallica Rules!! |
Wow, that was quite an outburst. We can handle it though, what with this being the Metallica thread and all.

Refl...*you're. But seriously...you're making broad, sweeping generlisations about why people dislike Metallica. You say people that jump on the "It's cool to hate bandwagon" are bad but I'd say you're just as bad for saying that that's the reason that most people hate 'Tallica. Alot of people grew up with early Metallica - Early Metallica being no radio play, videos, etc... - so when Metallica turn around a make a video to those fans the band sold out. Admitedly, yeah. Alot of people dislike Metallica because they don't like the direction that they changed musically. But also alot of people hate them becuase they think that the music they've made, from beginning to present, is utter shite. |
I <3 Orion. My fav instrumental out of the 4 albums.
Learning to play it, tis fun.
It's fun to learn on both bass and guitar. |

The bass part during the slow part is amazing. One of my favorite performances by Cliff. |
James didn't even know any music theory when he wrote Orion and it's amazing.

The only thing they did that was selling out was making videos and making St. Anger sololess. Just because they did those things doesn't mean that as a whole they are sellouts. |
James didn't even know any music theory when he wrote Orion and it's amazing.
and if am wrong, im pretty sure Cliff wrote all of Orion (guitar and bass)

I don't think so. The Master of Puppets inlay credits both James and Cliff with the writing process. The only other information it says is... 2nd Guitar Solo - Hetfield 4th Solo/Bass - Burton |
Anybody have Dream Theater doing Battery...

Yeah, saying something pwns is no big deal. I garauntee you it will be popular to say in actual speech in a few years. GO to a cyber cafe filled with the little kids playing Counter-Strike, they all say "Head Shot! Pwned!" and that lingo is the future. Going as far as to put as many numbers as possible into your words is stupid though. That's just a cry for approval.

And we will have our own little Metallica tribute song. I think MXican had this idea a while back, and maybe have each Official thread do one and have people vote on the best. It would be fun wouldnt it. |

The Tool thread has made backing tracks for eachother for a ton of songs, that's where I got the idea. Pick a song, something you know everyone else can play cause it's pretty easy. |
