did i not say they were a force in music? yes he does not do a lot of solos and thats because he cant have the spot light the whole time. he cant just start doing solos when hes the singer because then what would kirk do? :)

PepsiMetal 05-24-2005 11:03 AM

Right, james is rhythm guitarist and kirk basically does most solos, but that's just because he and james want him to. Imagine if james did whole guitar parts, and vocals. That would leave kirk out of the band basically. I like James' solo in NEM, although he should have made it a bit longer. It's too short. Hmm, did james or kirk write that solo?

You have a lot to learn about music, my friend.

Since when does being the singer mean that you can't play lead guitar? I'm guessing you've never heard Death, Bodom, Megadeth... actually, I'm going to guess that maybe you've never heard any other metal band?

Oh, and contrary to what Kirk Hammett says about his non solo playing now (I've already proved myself, Metallica fans knwo that i can write solos).... solos are not just some guy in a spotlight wanking off (sadly it is a lot), its supposed to add something to a song.

i think james wrote that solo, besides the song was written by hetfield and ulrich.

:) <--- indicated at joke...
griffin_page never heard of a joke?

edit: Ive heard a ton of other metal bands its basically the only type of music i listen too. but your right i havent heard death or bodom but megadeth is a great band...every solo in metallicas history has added somthing to their songs thats why everyone got upset when st. anger didnt really have any which is why i agree with u on that part but of course people didnt see the power in st. anger not many guitar solos but lots of drums which is cool.

edit: james wrote all the lyrics to NEM...because he missed his wife and kids. Lars helped write the music...
i wunna learn how to make that sound real bad its not a pick scrape and i doubt its a regular slide maybe a weird setting on his amp any ideas...?
Although a drummer I do play guitar in my spare time, Hence the Gibson Epiphone next to me!

I can create a similar sound using a normal guitar slide...

If I but the guitar to Rhythm and remove all distortion, resulting in a clean sound and put the slide accross all the strings, strum and slide to fret 6, and continue it will sound really wrong, add distortion, turn down bass on amp, add reverb and do it again :thumb:

A Gibson and Epiphone are two different things.

Practice.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:31 PM

ive been practicing for a year and a half...i need help with transitions from one string to another. are there any good sites that can help?

Deth 05-24-2005 12:44 PM

Sorry for the crappy response, but practice, practice and then practice some more. We can help with specific things, but stuff like that must be done over and over again.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:51 PM

yeah i understand its just frustrating...its something ive always wanted to do...be in a band i even bought this bass...its a squire but still its something to learn on...got a crate amp tho...

Deth 05-24-2005 12:52 PM

Are you any good? Can you play any 'Tallica songs?

Jev 05-24-2005 12:53 PM

When going from one string to another try to get the stroke in the direction of the string. So if the string you're going onto is below the one you're playing then move downwards in a downstroke. If it's above move upwards in an upstroke. Really lame advice I know, but it works.

Don't do that. Or if you're going to do it practice the oppostie as well otherwise you'll just pigeonhole yourself in terms of what techniques you can do.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 01:12 PM

i can play my friend of misery, motorbreath, for whom the bell tolls, enter sandman, and part of harvester of sorrow. I have a metallica tabs book that goes up to load so i just try to learn songs

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 01:14 PM

im not good with notes so i just try to play them basically fast, or as fast as i can...i need to learn notes. btw.. whats hammer is that like a slap?

edit: i can play the songs only when im looking at the tabs not besides misery because its one riff long...

I just realized that there isn't really any hard Metallica riffs to play.

Endless Obsession 05-24-2005 01:45 PM
I just realized that there isn't really any hard Metallica riffs to play.
True. The two hardest IMO are Damage Inc. and Dyers Eve, but i can play both.

Yeah Dyers eve is kind of tough, but it's not that hard.
What is your point? Some people like saint anger more than other albums. Not everyone likes every same kind of song and music. Some people like good charlotte more than metallica. So what? It's their own musical preference really. I mean you can find on the street many people that would prefer black album over the first 4 albums. Not everyone likes the raw thrashy type. I dont think there is a right answer to which songs, albums, bands, etc. are best. :thumb:

And I agree with madlyinangerwithu, enter sandman is a great song. It doesn't really matter if it's not as thrashy, or if it's more popular, etc.
My point was it wasnt the best 1000 songs, just a popularity contest.

greenantgods 05-25-2005 12:09 AM

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not (i just went straight to the last page to post) But I don't like much of Metallica...there old stuff is great...but in my opinion with the death of cliff metallica lost there soul (as quoted by lars ulrich) but anyways...no cliff=no good

Chu 05-25-2005 01:19 AM

Thanks for that.

I'd just like to say that And justice for all came after Burton died. Thought I'd throw that out there.

Right, but really every person will tell you different 1000 best songs. Popularity contest still means that people like that song more than the other.
