David Bazan (Pedro The Lion) has a new EP out. He's an awesome songwriter. I havn't heard it yet but I'm assuming it's great because of PTL
Elliott Smith works well. If you want to be a little snobby with your vocabulary, try The Decemberists.
One of my favourite bands! Someone recommended trhem to me in alt/indie about a year ago. Great lyrics. Thanks to all others for suggestions so far. I'll have a look at them all. |
On the subject of musical taste, can anyone recommend me some bands/songwriters who you think write great lyrics? I'm suffering from a shortage of new things right now.
I'd go Iron and Wine or Rocky Votolato. Both very good songwriters. |

Agreed 100% and more, but I thought you were into emo; a lot of emo bands write fantastic lyrics. |
What kind of music do all these bands play?
|
Iron & Wine = Indie/Soft Vocaled Folk and Rock Votolato is basically the same but he sings a little louder. Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), basically whispers over the mic. Here:

Lol. Iron and Wine are another of my already listened to bands. Excellent lyrics and they play vary atmospheric acoustic guitar as well. The second one i'll check out though. Thanks |
I like. Very mellow.
|
Neutral Milk Hotel, too. I don't think the music's all that great, but the lyrics are.
Musically, I think Neutral Milk Hotel are great, especially Jeff Mangum's vocals. But yeah, the center of the whole band is basically the lyrics.

I'm going to throw up.

He isn't, really.

I wish my neighbors would blow their friggin hands off already. :)
Oh. Hello. Hopefully you're all drinking by now. |
Oh no I'm sober and willing to listen to your story.
|
Oh I have no sob story, Tojamme. It's just that my neighbors (whom I abhor) can't help themselves when it comes to explosive devices and I worry my house might catch on fire someday and that'd be it for me. :upset:
|
lol
too bad for you. My neighbors aren't interesting, at all. |

|
SLSK owns everything.
|
Agreed.
|
Not really.
|
I'm legally drunk.
I'll probably post a "new" song within the next week. I've been writing too much serious stuff, so I'll offset it with this next one, maybe. Take care now. |
Is this site dyin' or what?
Oh well. Here's a cool poem I read today called Frenzy by Anne Sexton. I am not lazy. I am on the amphetamine of the soul. I am, each day, typing out the God my typewriter believes in. Very quick. Very intense, like a wolf at a live heart. Not lazy. When a lazy man, they say, looks toward heaven, the angels close the windows. Oh angels, keep the windows open so that I may reach in and steal each object, objects that tell me the sea is not dying, objects that tell me the dirt has a life-wish, that the Christ who walked for me, walked on true ground and that this frenzy, like bees stinging the heart all morning, will keep the angels with their windows open, wide as an English bathtub. |
What is going on with this damn site? Bloody database error my ass
/end of crazy muttering Thanks to everyone in here that recommended me some songwriters. Currently enjoying neutral milk hotel, elliot smith and the first decemberists album that i hadn't already bought. Excellent excellent excellent! :thumb: Soon to invest in some pedro the lion. |

Hi!
How goes, my lyrical friends? |
hey slack, hey mitch, hey thread.
How goes it? I've kind of given up on posting regularly until this damn database thing sorts itself out - I'm on a 56k at home, so most of the time this place is slower than snail sex anyway - chuck the database errors in there as well, and I can be waiting ten minutes for a damn page to load. Couple that with the fact I've got no inspiration whatsoever as well. So what's everyone doing with their summer? |
Winter here. Which means very little.
The database thing is giving me the ****s, it's slowing up my DSL to about 5-7 minutes per page, WHEN it does decide to work. Tonight it's ok though. |
Should I consider it a kind of critique...
...when my songs get deleted?
|
It usually means you've disobeyed a rule somewhere.
|
I had a dream I stood in Neil Young's kitchen.
He looked superior, and I felt like retching. I said I had to go away. He said, "No you must obey The laws of the universe, And the laws of the second verse. You're only as good as your last song. It's better to burn-out than to be proven wrong. Your voice will sound like a giant gong." I cracked my fingers and my brain goes... the fourth of Four Little Songs by rheostatics I think I'll just try to build up some good will before I post anymore songs. |
Read the rules, ensure the songs you post aren't offensive in any way, aren't JOKE SONGS, etc etc.
Timmy |
Innocuous, every one of your songs I've seen has been far too hokey; just read the rules and try to post something serious.
|
So what's everyone doing with their summer?
Hm. Biking alot, actually. Every summer there's a group that bicycles across the state and it sounds like fun in a completely insane way. I'll probably sign up next year. It's like 530 miles spread over seven days. Other than that, just writing scraps of poems and not playing guitar enough. :upset:
