so anyways i have had some issues with a friend of mine. and i was inspired to write this story about it last night at 2 am. um, its not perfect so dont critique it on that. instead try and get the message is sends.
Ok so there is this kid named bobby, bobby is going to try out for his basket ball team. First off a little back story. When bobby was younger he used to hang out at his house all day and shoot hoops in his drive way. Well one day the ball rolled out into the street, and he went to chance it. And with out looking both ways he stepped in front of a car. Bobby was blind sided. The man driving the car got out and ran for help. They rushed him to the hospital. All the doctors could do to save his life was to amputate his legs just below the knee.
In years leading up to high school bobby would still shoot hoops in front of his house every day, just playing having fun with his friends, and working on his jump shot. The local high school that Bobby would end up going to was a world renowned basketball program. Parents from all over the world would move into this part of town just to give their kids a shot. The time came, and Bobby made it out for his tryout. He suited up and got out on the court with everyone else freshman and senior alike, 6’ to 6’9”. Bobby ran around on his two little stubs and was able to keep up with the rest of the players, but didn’t stand out. The on looking coach didn’t recognize this kid from years ago as the child that stepped in front of his car. The final day of hell week came, and the coach posted the roster. Bobby’s name was not on it. The coach pulled bobby aside, and asked him if he would like to be his towel boy. Bobby thought anything that gets me as close as I can get to basketball here, and responded “I’d love to do it”. He asked the coach why he didn’t make the team, and the responded ‘well bobby you’re going to be playing against people that are twice as tall as you are. If you go for a shot you’re going to get stuffed every time, and if you try and dunk you’re, well, quite frankly, going to come a little short, no pun intended, sorry son maybe next year.’
So Bobby stuck around as a towel boy, thinking he’d either get to help coach, or become an emergency alternate. Just before the play offs, one of the backup point guards fouls out, and the starter for that position has sprained his ankle. Bobby looks up at the coach, and say with confidence, put me in coach, I can win this one for the team. The coach looks down, and is instantly reminded of the high defect that bobby has. The coach turns away from bobby and asks a friend of bobby’s the back up center to go in a play as the 5th man. The new replacement’s dad stands in the crowd. And starts giving instruction to his son, about how to keep his eyes up, and hustle. The Coach looks back and gives the dad a mean stare. Meanwhile Bobby is devastated that the coach would rather throw in his friend whose only advantage is the use of his longer legs. Bobby knows he a better shooter than his friend, and he can maneuver much easier.
The game is lost 90-105, the perfect season was over.
That summer a clinic was put on at bobby’s school. Michael Jordan was the guest teacher, and it was hosted by the school principal. The Coach was an old friend of Michael and was the one who asked him to come along and help his team. Michael noticed bobby, I mean who couldn’t right? Bobby walked up to him and told him his heart wrenching story, Michael gave bobby his phone number, and asked him to call him, and he’d do everything in his power to help his game. Every weekend the coach would get together with Michael and just hang out. At first Michael would whoop up on the coach. After stepping back and analyzing his style the coach was able to catch up on his subtle messages that he would send him as he moved. The coach was able to finally keep up with Jordan by watching him. Michael said ‘man you’re really gifted as a coach you should do fine, we just need to get you the right players.’ The Coach responded, ‘yeah I’ve been with out a team for years. Ever since I moved here really.’ Jordan said ‘is that right, well I’ll see what I can do. I’ll look over your shoulder, and I’ll help in any way I can. Actually I know this one kid who I’ve been mentoring all summer. I’ll send him to your tryouts this year.’
Every day after school Bobby would come over the M.J.’s house, and Jordan would run him ragged on drills, and strategies, and his shooting. Bobby knew he was good, and easily the best player on the team, but the competition was so fierce that no one would dare say anything to the coach about bobby’s skills. Everyone could tell he was improving, his friends, and his family, were all astonished at how much better he had gotten just over the summer. With a new found confidence bobby showed up for tryout. A pick up games starts just before practice, bobby is never picked. He’s left to sit on the side line with the towels. The coach comes in, *whistle* ‘everyone line up’. Bobby scurries down the line. All the drills, strategies, and shooting the coach tested them on Bobby had already mastered. He was at the top of his class on the hard wood. After the first day, the coach and his 2 captains one for jv one for varsity, stayed around for a 2 on 2 pickup game. ‘Hey towel boy, get in here we need one more’ the coach shouted. Bobby waddles over and takes his spot near the baseline. The coach checks the ball in, and is instantly double teamed. Bobby shouts ‘pass it here, I can make it, I’m wide open’. The coach looks, fakes the pass and takes a shot. Bricks and flies out of bounds. The captains pass the ball in, and bobby blocks the pass it rolls away and the coach picks it up. Again he’s double teamed as soon as he gets the ball. Bobby shouts again ‘coach pass it’. The coach fakes the pass and shoots. It air balls and goes out. Bobby aggravated rushes off the court.
The roster is once again posted and bobby’s name is not on it. But he shows up anyway. The coach made it very clear at each practice that bobby is not welcome aside from being a towel boy.
Half way through the season, bobby is given an opportunity to get a set of prosthetics for his legs. Booby misses several games in hopes to get fitted for his new legs. Upon returning form his doctor bobby now towers at 6’3”.
Do you think bobby should get a shot now?
