I don't listen to Power Metal, kthx.

(Exception : Some rhapsody and some Children of Bodom)

EDIT : Gilmour
If it's a pure synonym, what's the use of it being in the language twice?
Variation in speech and literature to prevent overuse of a word referring to a frequently used concept/object.

Dancin' Man 02-21-2005 05:21 PM

It;s about the name Superpeer. Agoraphobic Nosebleed? Who can go wrong with a name like that (anyone who listens to the band is who)

I know it's about the name, but I don't want to be associated with Power Metal.

Why is there no perfect synonym for say, white then?

Dancin' Man 02-21-2005 05:25 PM

There is, it's "right".
I like Nas and Eminem.
Nas is great (as you can tell from my placement of him), but Eminem...not so much. His first two albums were pretty good (and he was good on "Forgot About Dre"), and he has a great flow, but nowadays his materal all sounds tired. He's a bad producer but he refuses to admit it, and lyrically he's "meh" at best.
The three on your list I really like. Kanye West, Ludacris, Madvillian, Aesop Rock, Mos Def and OutKast are the others I'm a big fan of.
I like Kanye West. The College Dropout was flawed, inconsistent, and at times self-indulgent (but in the end, it was great), but he's a great producer and on TCD we can see that Kanye truly is brilliant. Kanye's got a lot of potential. Once he gets his head on straight we could see some classics from him.

Outkast...man, I knew I was forgetting someone. You can put them at #10 and drop Ghostface.

Mos Def is solid, but I only have one of his albums, and Ludacris is fairly inconsistent.
DN you listen to any MF Doom or Tek9?
You mean Tech N9ne or whatever? I like what I've heard.

Arucard 02-21-2005 05:26 PM

Im a 'lil john fan. Buts thats probably only cause i know jack about rap.

RiceMonster 02-21-2005 05:27 PM

The closest thing to rap I like would be Bob Marley, which isn't close at all. I've tried getiing into it a few times. I guess it isn't for me.

Yea I don't know how to spell it. I decided I don't know enough about him to start a consistent conversation, but I do like his stuff.

superpeer 02-21-2005 05:29 PM
Why is there no perfect synonym for say, white then?
Because there wasn't someone that woke up one day and decided to make up pure synonyms for frequently used things. Language consists of evolution and coincidence.

Besides, colours have always been a special case. There's a whole system behind language and colour, I don't feel like going into detail though.

I was just explaining the apparition of pure synonyms there, in that particular post, because you inquired it of me so helplessly. I wasn't stating an absolute law, because, of course, there are no absolute laws in language.

Yeah, definitely. I don't like his new material so much. I love the slim shady LP though, probably my favourite Hip Hop album.

In his first two records when he was just an angry white guy taking shots at everybody and when he was working with Dre, he was great. But now he's run out of things to take shots at and he's apparently abandoned Dre.
Hey Superpeer what's the definition of a pure synonym?
Eh, two words that have the exact same denotation and the exact same connotation, id est, they mean exactly the same and can be used in the same situations.

They're very rare though. What common folk call 'synonym' isn't actually a genuine synonym, but the term can be handy to use sometimes, but strictly speaking it isn't 100% correct.

There's a difference?

thickasabrick 02-21-2005 05:43 PM

For me, every time I hear Eminems newest single, and I automatically think it sucks. But if I wait a few years and hear it again, I find it quite entertaining. I'm not sure why, I'm just like that with a lot of newer music, it takes a long time to grow on me.

edit- If you wanna hear real rap, listen to Bob Dylan, sometime's his songs get to the point where he's trying to sing so fast he just starts talking. Subterranean Homesick Blues or Leopard-skin Pillbox Hat are rap at it's finest. ;) Those are some dope rhymes.

Arucard 02-21-2005 05:43 PM

I always thought that Rap was the style of vocals and Hip Hop was the music.
