Sorry Jake, but I'm the theory n3rd around here.
Tool's songs start mostly in D Dorian which is neither major nor minor but has elements of both, also the most common in rock music. One thing people forget is that the songs go through lots of key changes too. All scales are modes but two are used more than all the others, Aeolian (minor, and natural minor in most metal) Ionian (major). A mode is a series of notes in which there is one principal note (root) to which all the others are related. The first and last notes of a mode define the key or tonality. The step pattern which defines the sound of a mode can be generated by simply taking a scale, the major scale, for example, and by changing the note the modes start and end on. Because there are seven notes in the major scale, there are seven places to start a scale. So there are seven modes that can be derived from the 7-note major scale. Each of the seven arrangements of notes will have their own distinct sound. So Tool does usually base their songs around D Dorian, but Dorian is not a type of major scale, in fact it's more commonly associated with minor scales. |
Yeah, I always thought Dorian had more of a minor feel. I'm pretty sure it has a minor 3rd, the only difference between that and Aeolian is the raised 6th. I may be thinking of a different mode though.

You're correct. |
You both amaze me! I'm impressed with the ability to, not only have an understanding of notes and scales, but also identify notes by ear.
It makes what I do seem mundane! Strong work mates! |
Honestly, there's enough gradual change in the sound of the scream that leads me to believe it wasn't looped at all. Meh.
Plus he does it amazingly well on that Oklahoma show bootleg. I want new Tool. Preferably now.
Oh god, on that bootleg when he does the scream... that's probably the coolest/best thing I've ever seen. So much power and feel/emotion... |
sounds like i need this bootleg then.
hmmm. |
Hey, long time no chat!
I just got the Lateralus vinyl and I'm thinking about playing it once just to hear it and I want to know will it have ANY effect on the picture disk because I want to keep it in MINT, no, ABSOLUTE MINTcondition!! Will playing it lower the quality of the picture in the slightest. thanks. |
if any one would like to send me the oklahoma bootleg i would be much grateful >_<
Ugh... I'm not uploading that behemoth again... maybe later..
Haha...behemoth is right. I may upload it later, but right now all my bandwitdth is being used by my friend getting files off me, and my own downloading. =\ |
If I did do it, it'd be either Wednesday or the weekend.
|
So I was more right than Satch was? :p
:partcool: You know, that video has to be torrented somewhere. I'm sure you guys could find it somewhere without having to upload it every time someone wants it. |
Haha, 'artcool.'
|
I got owned by the ":p" smiley. I fix'd it though.
|
So I was more right than Satch was? :p
Actually, no. What Moses said is correct, but what you and I were talking about was different. Essentially, I was correct in our argument, but it didn't matter because Moses settled it anyway. Did that make sense? |
I like it. I'm going to use it from now on in describing things. ;)
Yeah, like Jake said, the Oklahoma video is readily available on Soulseek for anyone who can use that to download it. And I agree, it make sense if it was torrented somewhere. |
I'd look for a torrent for you guys, but that would do me little good, as it would probably take me until Christmas to download it all.
EDIT: http://www.geocities.com/tenmileshugh/tool.htm Holy crap. That's a long list of Tool bootlegs. Perhaps it'll help some of you guys out. |

All of my Tool bootlegs are on my soulseek, including OK.
http://guitargeek.com/rigview/593/
That was all I could find.
yeah that's all i could find myself as well... doesn't even have the model #'s of the ibanez pedals... i've also heard that he uses a boss flanger, not ibanez. |
i guess he uses mostly boss, but he has an interesting tone for just boss pedals. must be his pickups or cab/head setup that really defines his tone.
i had the tone to opiate down for a while till i upgraded my pedal board now im screwed again |

anyone know what adam's pedal setup is as of late?
Here it is a couple of weeks ago. I can make out a dunlop wah, a boss digital delay, a boss chorus emsemble, a boss tuner, one of those wierd effects things that John Paul Jones out of led zeppelin used (the thing that looks like organ pedals), two what appear to be boss mega distortion pedals(which seems kinda wierd), and some pedals are blanked out, also i think I can see a small stone phaser , he also stopped using the Boss flanger, its not in the pic and it isnt behind the black either. I also have a great pic of justins gear, if anyones interested just ask. |
